Local senior center celebrates accreditation
AUSTINTOWN, Ohio (WKBN) – A major recognition was bestowed on one of the brightest places in Austintown.
The Austintown Senior Center serves up to 150 seniors a day and 500 every week. It has earned the Senior Center of Excellence Accreditation, which measures the programs and service it provides to seniors, and its commitment to facilities.
The honor comes from the Ohio Association of Senior Centers.
'We are the eighth senior center in the entire state of Ohio that has gone through the entire process and received accreditation. So, it's kind of a big deal,' said Jessick Ricker, marketing, programming and technology director.
The process to receive the honor took about three years to accomplish.
The Austintown Senior Center opened in October 2010.

Ground broken for new home in Campbell as part of development project
CAMPBELL, Ohio (WKBN) – It's a first in the City of Campbell, aimed at meeting an urgent need. There was a ceremonial groundbreaking Wednesday morning for a brand new home on Whipple Avenue. 'When we have a shortage of housing, and especially that doesn't break people's bank accounts,' said Deb Flora, with the Mahoning County Land Bank. It marks the first time the Mahoning County Land Bank, Youngstown Neighborhood Development Corporation and City of Campbell have worked together on a housing project. Money for this development is coming from a new project from the state known as 'Welcome Home Ohio,' which was created to help working class, middle-income families buy affordable housing. 'At a time where housing construction is very expensive, the Welcome Home Ohio dollars are making it affordable for us, as the developer, to get it done and then there's also a requirement from the state that we can't sell this house for more than $180,000,' Flora said. She says they have to sell the home to a household that is at or below 80% of the average median income. Mahoning County has already received more than $7 million from this program, which will pay for 31 projects around the county. It's the second groundbreaking this month, following one in Struthers last week, with half a dozen more in Youngstown. In this particular case, the land bank purchased this property in 2017 and tore the existing house down. 'I mean, it's going full cycle from being a blighted property that creates negative energy and is kind of a contagion on the block, removing it, the interim use was a green vacant lot,' said Ian Benniston, with YNDC. Now Mayor George Levendis hopes this, along with a revitalization effort of businesses on nearby 12th Street, could help attract new residents to the city. 'This is a first step and, hopefully, there's going to be many more of these kind of houses,' he said. Summer EBT ‘SUN Bucks' going out this month
(WKBN) – Ohio's Sun Bucks program will be distributed through June. The Summer Electronic Benefit Transfer Program for Children, also known as Summer EBT or SUN Bucks, is a federal program that provides assistance to eligible families with school-aged children while those schools are closed for the summer. SUN Bucks is a one-time benefit of $120 per eligible child. The benefit will be distributed in batches through June. Those receiving SNAP and Medicaid are automatically enrolled and will be loaded on the One Direction Card. New recipients will receive a benefit card by mail. Like SNAP, the extra money can be used to buy goods at grocery stores, farmers markets, and other authorized retailers. Last year, $144 million was given out in extra food assistance to over 1.2 million Ohio children through the SUN Bucks program. Families not automatically eligible can learn more about the application process online. Research shows that during a slowing economy, $1 billion in new SNAP benefits would lead to an increase of $1.54 billion in Gross Domestic Product (GDP), 54% above and beyond the new benefits. Community gathers for ‘Good Evening, Austintown'
AUSTINTOWN, Ohio (WKBN) — Austintown is touting a bright future. On Tuesday night, community members gathered for 'Good Evening, Austintown,' a community-wide update featuring township leaders, local businesses, and schools. Residents packed Biker Brewhouse to hear news from township trustees and Austintown Local Schools. Highlights included new plans for community development, a rundown of new local businesses and an introduction to Hollywood Gaming at Mahoning Valley Race Course's new GM. It also included a celebration of Hyne's Industries' 100th year. 'Austintown has been really good to us. We started off on Oakwood. We had three of four facilities in that area, and we consolidated on Hendricks Road to a 300,000-square-foot manufacturing facility. Austintown has really been helpful with employees and the infrastructure we have there,' said Ryan Day, CFO of Hynes Industries.
