What we know about posts calling for 'economic blackout' on Feb. 28

Yahoo25-02-2025

In late February 2025, a month after U.S. President Donald Trump began his second term in office, claims spread online that a day of "economic blackout" was set to happen on Feb. 28, 2025. On social media, posts multiplied calling users not to buy anything from major corporations that day, with some claiming that Boston College history professor Heather Cox Richardson was leading the effort. Further, several Snopes readers emailed memes about the event, inquiring about it and Cox Richardson's involvement:

The meme read:

"What do you know about an Economic Blackout (National Stop Buying Day) on February 28, 2025," one reader asked. "Is Heather Cox Richardson really involved with the Economic Blackout," asked another. Meanwhile, posts multiplied on Facebook, TikTok, Instagram, Bluesky and Reddit, spreading the word about the supposed event.
Indeed, the event was real. It started as the initiative of John Schwarz, a man born in Queens, New York. After Trump took office, Schwarz launched a movement he called The People's Union, and as a first action, he proposed that his followers not buy anything on Feb. 28, 2025. However, Cox Richardson was not a part of this effort.
On Jan. 29, 2025, Schwarz posted a video titled "Fixing Corporate Greed" on Instagram, in which he suggested that the problem with politics was that politicians were beholden to corporate interests, and in which he invited his followers to comment if they wanted to hear more about what they could do to fix this problem (archived):
This video received 99 likes.
In a Feb. 4, 2025, video (archived) Schwarz announced the launch of The People's Union and said that a website was in the works. The website was up as of this writing. He added that the plan was to "turn it all off" for one day. "We don't buy from any major corporations, we do not spend on anything we do not absolutely need," he said. "For one day, we remind them who really has the power." He also described this effort as "an excellent initial test for us."
The video went viral, receiving nearly 400,000 likes. In the comments of this video, people chimed in from other parts of the world. One follower commented that she was supporting him from Norway, another from the U.K., a third from Germany.
Later the same day, he announced in a separate video (archived) the date of the economic blackout: Feb. 28, 2025. Later, on Feb. 11, 2025, he posted an image on Instagram, inviting people outside the U.S. to join the blackout (archived):
As of this writing, the man had amassed 294,000 followers on Instagram and nearly 309,000 followers on TikTok, where he reposted every video.
By Feb. 16, 2025, he had announced more days of action in March and April, targeting specific corporations. That list grew, and on Feb. 20, 2025, he revealed a schedule that had added dates through July 2025.
Again, however, Cox Richardson was not involved. Indeed, she posted on Facebook on Feb. 19, 2025, distancing herself from the boycott and the movement:

NYC comptroller candidate boasts 70 endorsements from faith leaders — but some have never heard of him

A Brooklyn Democrat bragged that he was endorsed by more than 70 faith leaders last week — but a bunch of his supposed supporters said they never even heard of him. City comptroller candidate Justin Brannan's campaign boasted about the 'major show of grassroots support' from bishops, pastors and reverends in a since-deleted social media post last Wednesday, but some religious leaders immediately wondered how they even ended up on the list. 'This man is unknown to me and I did not grant permission for my name to be listed. I'm not endorsing ANYONE!' Bishop E.M. Davis – who was listed as Pastor Joon Davis – posted on Facebook. 3 Councilman Justin Brannan (D-Brooklyn) is term-limited and running to be the NYC Comptroller. Paul Martinka 'This endorsement was made without my permission,' Rev. Diamond Clinton-White – who was listed as Rev. Diamond Clinton – posted in an Instagram story. Roughly a dozen religious leaders said they had been listed as supporting Brannan — who is now a member of the City Council — to be the next fiscal watchdog without being contacted by the campaign. The Post spoke to four of the faith leaders upset that their names were used to endorse a candidate without their permission. 'It's just awkward and I felt violated,' Bishop Davis said. 3 The social post has since been taken down. 3 The campaign stumble comes as Brannan tries to make up ground with a large swatch of undecided voters. Tyshaun Brown/Facebook Pastor Louis Bligen, who only learned he was on the list when contacted for comment, felt like the comptroller was being forced onto him. 'I don't appreciate that. Let me make my own decision,' Pastor Bligen said. A spokesperson for Brannan's campaign blamed the gaffe on an external vendor who was tasked with drumming up support for religious leaders. The endorsement announcement has since been taken down and the campaign is trying to verify who had and hadn't voiced support for Brannan, the spokesperson said. 'This happens. We have big support among faith leaders, but the tweet is down for now while we update the list,' the spokesperson said. The news comes with just over a week left in the Democratic primary as Brannan, who is term-limited, tries to win over the nearly one-third of undecided voters. The frontrunner, current Manhattan Borough President Mark Levine, polled at 44% compared to Brannan's 14% in a Honan Strategy Group poll from June 11. Brannan also dropped an internal poll last week that had him trailing Levine by 11 percentage points with 44% of voters still undecided.

Hillary Clinton Just Hit On One Of Donald Trump's Biggest Insecurities With Three Words

At this point, we all know just how OBSESSED Donald Trump appears to be with crowd sizes at his rallies, inauguration, and events. Even former President Barack Obama commented on Trump's fixation during his 2024 Democratic National Convention speech, when Obama seemed to suggest crowd sizes are akin to a penis measuring contest in the 79-year-old's mind. CNN / Twitter: @yashar Well, this weekend was Trump's anticipated parade in honor of the US military's 250th anniversary (and perhaps his birthday.) And, well, the crowd sizes looked something like this... Related: "Let Them Eat Teslas": People At The "No Kings" Protests This Weekend Brought Signs That Were So Clever I'm Still Laughing About Them ...while protests against Trump's presidency on that same exact day looked like this across the US. It's a cheeky but honest comparison, and one that former US Secretary of State Hillary Clinton couldn't help but poke fun at. Related: Well, Well, Well, For The Second Time In 2 Weeks, People Are Letting JD Vance Know EXACTLY How They Feel About Him In Public In a now-viral Instagram post featuring side-by-sides of Trump's parade and the protests, Clinton urged followers to "compare and contrast" the scenes — three simple words that now have people chuckling. "Compare and contrast scenes from yesterday in America," she wrote in the post's caption. "On the one hand, Trump's low-energy Dear Leader parade (that cost you $45 million). On the other, millions of people across the country gathering peacefully to say: Here, we have no kings." In response, people commented the nation-wide protest's name and chant: "No Kings." And plenty commended Clinton for the not-so-subtle shade. "I love you so much for doing this, Hillary!!!" one person wrote. "The shade of it all!"
