MPs Raise Concerns Over School Safety After Zara Qairina's Death
Datuk Matbali Musah (GRS-Sipitang) said the tragic incident, which claimed the life of the boarding school student in Papar, Sabah, was not only heartbreaking but also raised questions about how well the national education system protects students from bullying and negligence.
'How many more of our children must lose hope after being bullied before action is taken? I plead not just as a member of parliament but as a father, as a citizen, that school bullying be addressed with proactive measures,' he said while debating the Education (Amendment) Bill 2025 in the Dewan Rakyat today.
Matbali urged the government to establish a special anti-bullying unit at every District Education Office (PPD), tasked with conducting regular monitoring in schools and holding meetings at least twice a year with schools, Parent-Teacher Associations and the police.
Datuk Suhaimi Nasir (BN-Libaran) said transparency in the investigation is crucial to uncover the truth and dispel any perception of negligence or conspiracy.
'Only through a transparent investigation can we restore public confidence in our education system. The family of the deceased deserves the truth, justice for their loss, and reform of the education system,' he said.
Datuk Seri Saifuddin Abdullah (PN-Indera Mahkota), meanwhile, raised questions about the actual cause of the incident and whether it was an accident or involved criminal elements.
'If the incident was indeed an accident, what were the contributing factors. (Was it) the environment, hostel safety, or the emotional and mental state of the victim?
'I hope the Zara case is resolved swiftly, fairly, and transparently under the law, as this is crucial for her grieving family and to put an end to the rumours surrounding the case,' he said.

Works minister denies viral RM26mil gratuity payment letter
KUALA LUMPUR: Works Minister Datuk Seri Alexander Nanta Linggi has denied the authenticity of a letter dated July 28, 2025, which went viral on social media, purportedly from the ministry regarding a gratuity payment to an individual. He said that the letter was fake and was never issued by the ministry or himself. "The ministry never issued any official invitation for such a gratuity payment ceremony. Changes to 13MP weren't out of nowhere, says ministry

(Bernama pic) PETALING JAYA : The changes made to the 13th Malaysia Plan following Rafizi Ramli's resignation as economy minister were not sudden, according to the government. The economy ministry said the amendments were instead part of its measures to ensure the 13MP was aligned with the Madani economy's aspirations. 'The changes and amendments made to the 13MP draft were not sudden in nature or outside of our planning. 'The preparation of the 13MP, meant for the next five years, was executed based on necessity following holistic negotiation processes involving all stakeholders,' it said in a written parliamentary reply. The ministry said 'overhauls and revisions' were made throughout the document's preparation to ensure every view and proposal received was taken into account while staying true to the government's main policies. It was replying to Ronald Kiandee (PN-Beluran), who had asked what drastic policy changes necessitated the 13MP being amended at the last minute. Kiandee, a Bersatu vice-president, was referring to the announcement on June 27 that finance minister II Amir Hamzah Azizan was given the duties of the economy portfolio and tasked with amending and overhauling the 13MP. Amir had said he received 'a lot of feedback' from other ministers which necessitated an overhaul of the 13MP. Rafizi questioned why the 13MP needed to be revamped. However, he later said he was happy that nearly all the major policy reforms he had included were retained in the tabled version of the document.

Govt moots purchase of 16 new buses for FRU after fatal crash

(Bernama pic) PETALING JAYA : The home ministry has proposed the procurement of 16 new buses with a capacity of 44 passengers each for the Federal Reserve Unit (FRU) following the crash in May that claimed the lives of nine FRU personnel. Home minister Saifuddin Nasution Ismail said the buses would be used by the FRU for general use and long-distance travel. In a written parliamentary reply, Saifuddin said the ministry proposed that funds be allocated to procure the buses under the 13th Malaysia Plan. He also said the ministry has proposed customising existing FRU vehicles to ensure they fit the set safety specifications, as well as the installation of additional safety components like dash cameras. 'The police are holding discussions with various stakeholders concerning improvements to SOPs (involving the transportation of FRU personnel). 'The date of implementation of the new SOPs will be set once the procedures are finalised and approved by the police force's leadership,' he said. Nine FRU members were killed and nine others injured after the truck they were in crashed with a lorry in Teluk Intan, Perak, on May 12. Those who died were S Perumal, 44, Roslan Abd Rahim, 46, Pozli Jaudin, 41, Nurit Pandak, 34, Amiruddin Zabri, 38, Hilmi Azlan, 38, Akmal Muhamad, 35, Damarrulan Abdul Latif, 33, and Akmal Wafi Annuar, 28. The 45-year-old lorry driver, Rudi Zulkarnain Mat Radi, was charged on May 16 with nine counts of causing death by reckless driving. He claimed trial to all the charges. A preliminary report by the task force investigating the crash also found that the tipper lorry was carrying 40,960kg of gravel, exceeding the permitted limit of 24,000kg by 70.67%.
