Government Hospitals CEO Participates in Arab Health 2024 in Dubai
Dubai: Dr. Mariam Athbi Al Jalahma, CEO of Government Hospitals, participated in the 50th edition of the Arab Health Conference and Exhibition, held at the Dubai International Convention and Exhibition Centre on January 27-30.
According to Bahrain News Agency, the event was organised by the UAE Ministry of Health and Prevention, the Government of Dubai, the Dubai Health Authority, the Department of Health, and the Dubai Healthcare City Authority. It brought together healthcare experts and officials from around the world to discuss the latest developments and challenges in the sector.
Dr. Al Jalahma highlighted that Government Hospitals' participation aligns with its commitment to enhancing healthcare services and adopting best medical practices to strengthen Bahrain's healthcare system. She noted that Arab Health provides a valuable platform for fostering international cooperation and exchanging expertise with leading healthcare institutions.
She also emphasised the ongoing efforts of Government Hospitals to invest in advanced technologies and develop training programmes to ensure the highest standards of healthcare for citizens and residents.

Dr. Mariam Athbi Al Jalahma, Chief Executive Officer of Government Hospitals, reaffirmed the institution's commitment to advancing healthcare services and optimizing available resources to support the health sector and serve the community. Her remarks came during a tour with editors-in-chief of local newspapers, aimed at highlighting key achievements of government hospitals in 2024. Dr. Al Jalahma praised the vital role played by the national press as an active member of Team Bahrain, emphasizing its contribution to showcasing national achievements across various sectors. She revealed that government hospitals have successfully implemented 80% of their self-management plan, a strategic initiative designed to enhance operational efficiency. Salmaniya Medical Complex (SMC) recorded an average bed occupancy rate of 80%, and 90% in intensive care units, reflecting the high operational capacity of these facilities. In the field of medical training and professional development, Dr. Al Jalahma reported that 46 doctors were sent abroad for specialized fellowship programs, while 304 doctors enrolled in various board certification programs. Additionally, 1,509 nurses received training across different nursing specialties, significantly boosting the competency of national medical staff. During 2024, government hospitals received over 1.2 million visits, including more than 400,000 visits to the emergency department at SMC and over 509,000 visits to outpatient clinics. Bahrainis accounted for 82% of the total patients served. The hospitals conducted more than 20.4 million laboratory tests and over 316,000 radiology exams throughout the year. In addition, 22,944 surgical operations and 7,670 childbirth cases were recorded, highlighting the institutions' critical role in providing daily healthcare services. To expand service capacity, 56 additional beds were made operational, along with specialized units such as a short-stay unit for women with sickle cell anemia and a biological treatment unit. A dedicated psychiatric emergency wing was also introduced, signaling a move toward more specialized and integrated health services. Government hospitals earned several national and international accreditations in 2024. Notably, SMC was designated as an official examination center for the UK's Royal College of Physicians fellowship exams. The institution also secured Australian accreditation, ISO certification for its laboratory, and national accreditation from the National Health Regulatory Authority (NHRA) with a platinum rating. Additionally, it received institutional accreditation from the Saudi Commission for Health Specialties and won three patient safety awards from the Arab Hospitals Federation. As part of Bahrain's initiative to modernize 500 government services, 23 new e-services were launched. These included services related to sick leave documentation, medical report requests, appointment changes, and remote consultation clinics at correctional and rehabilitation centers. On the performance improvement front, 145 development projects were implemented, 47 key performance indicators (KPIs) were monitored, and advanced mechanisms for risk management and clinical auditing were introduced. The hospitals also inaugurated a strategic planning and project management department, along with a digital dashboard to track KPIs—steps aimed at bolstering institutional efficiency and oversight. These advancements underscore the continued evolution of government healthcare in Bahrain, reinforcing its commitment to delivering high-quality, patient-centered care aligned with national development goals.

Saudi Arabia Tops MENA Region in E-Government Services in 2024
Riyadh: The Kingdom of Saudi Arabia ranked first among Middle East and North African countries in the 2024 Government Electronic and Mobile Services Maturity Index, issued by the United Nations Economic and Social Commission for Western Asia (ESCWA), achieving the top position for the third consecutive time with an overall maturity rate of 96%. According to Bahrain News Agency, the index reflects the strong support of the Saudi leadership for the digital government ecosystem. Ahmed bin Mohammed Al Suwaiyan, Governor of the Digital Government Authority, emphasised that integration among government entities, the use of artificial intelligence and emerging technologies contributed to advancing the Kingdom's global position and enhancing the beneficiary experience. Since 2020, Saudi Arabia has made notable progress, rising from fourth place to second in 2021 and leading the index in 2022, 2023, and 2024, driven by advancements in digital services in the health and education sectors. These included digital prescriptions, appointment bookings, telehealth services, and remote learning platforms, which improved service quality and beneficiary satisfaction. The Kingdom outperformed 16 countries in the index, which assessed the maturity of 100 government services delivered via electronic portals and smart applications. Saudi Arabia scored 99% in service availability and development, 93% in service usage and beneficiary satisfaction, and 99% in public outreach. Saudi Arabia advanced 25 places in the 2024 United Nations E-Government Development Index, becoming one of the world's leading countries. It ranked fourth globally and first regionally in the Digital Services Index, and seventh globally in the E-Participation Index.

Northern Governor and WHO Representative Discuss Health Initiatives in Bahrain
Manama: Ali bin Abdul Hussain Al Asfoor, Northern Governor, received Dr. Asad Hafeez, Acting Representative of the World Health Organisation (WHO) in the Kingdom of Bahrain. The Governor commended the cooperation with WHO through the Healthy Cities Programme. He highlighted the successful accreditation of A'ali as a healthy city and underscored the Governorate's efforts to designate the Northern Governorate as a healthy governorate, in line with the principle of 'Health for All by All.' According to Bahrain News Agency, the meeting reviewed the Governorate's key health initiatives, including nine editions of the 'Biggest Loser' competition to combat obesity and smoking, mosquito control campaigns across the Governorate, and the observance of global health events to promote preventive health and raise public awareness. The two sides also discussed ways to activate community partnerships in health and awareness sectors to support Bahrain's health vision and future aspirations. Dr. Hafeez commended the Governorate's efforts in supporting health initiatives. He expressed readiness to highlight the Northern Governorate's health programmes through international, regional, and local platforms, emphasising WHO's commitment to ongoing cooperation in support of sustainable development goals and enhanced community health in Bahrain.
