Soccer-PSG leave Donnarumma out of UEFA Super Cup squad amid exit rumours
(Reuters) -Paris St Germain have left goalkeeper Gianluigi Donnarumma out of their squad for Wednesday's UEFA Super Cup clash with Tottenham Hotspur, amid media reports linking the Italy international with a move away from the French side.
Donnarumma was PSG's first-choice keeper and played a key role as they won the Ligue 1 and the Champions League last season. The 26-year-old has won the French top-flight three times since joining from AC Milan in 2021.
However, French media reports said Donnarumma, whose contract with PSG ends next year, may be on his way out this summer. PSG also signed Lucas Chevalier from Lille, who was named Ligue 1's goalkeeper of the year last season.
Chevalier, Matvey Safonov and Renato Marin were the three keepers named in the squad on Tuesday for the match against Europa League champions Spurs.
PSG squad: Achraf Hakimi, Lucas Beraldo, Marquinhos, Khvicha Kvaratskhelia, Fabian Ruiz, Goncalo Ramos, Ousmane Dembele, Desire Doue, Vitinha, Lee Kang-In, Lucas Hernandez, Nuno Mendes, Bradley Barcola, Lucas Chevalier, Warren Zaire-Emery, Matvey Safonov, Noham Kamara, Ibrahim Mbaye, Willian Pacho, Renato Marin.

Tennis-Venus Williams receives US Open wildcard
NEW YORK (Reuters) -Two-time U.S. Open singles champion Venus Williams has received a wildcard entry into this year's tournament, organisers said on Wednesday, as the 45-year-old American continues her age-defying return to the court. Williams became the oldest player to win a WTA singles match since 2004 when she beat Peyton Stearns at last month's Washington Open after a 16-month absence from competitive tennis. She last played in the U.S. Open singles main draw in 2023, losing in the first round to Belgian Greet Minnen. The seven-time Grand Slam winner is also playing in the tournament's new-look mixed doubles tournament with compatriot Reilly Opelka. Other women's singles wildcards included France's Caroline Garcia, in what will likely be the 2022 semi-finalist's last appearance at Flushing Meadows. The 2022 WTA Finals winner announced plans to retire from the sport earlier this year. (Reporting by Amy Tennery in New York, Editing by Ed Osmond)

Cristian Romero named new Tottenham captain after Son's departure
CRISTIAN Romero has been confirmed as Tottenham Hotspur's new captain following the departure of Son Heung-min. The Argentine defender takes over the armband after Son's move to LAFC earlier this month. Son had captained Spurs for the past two seasons, including their Europa League triumph in May. Romero served as vice-captain during that period and led the team in the Europa League final before Son's introduction. The 27-year-old will make his debut as permanent skipper in Wednesday's UEFA Super Cup clash against Paris Saint-Germain. New manager Thomas Frank revealed the decision on Tottenham's official website. 'I had a good conversation with Cuti Romero and he's going to be our captain,' Frank stated. The Danish coach praised Romero's leadership qualities both on and off the pitch. 'He was very honoured and very happy about it,' Frank added about Romero's reaction. The centre-back joined Tottenham from Atalanta in 2021 and was part of Argentina's 2022 World Cup-winning squad. Frank emphasised Romero's ability to drive the team forward through his performances and attitude. The appointment comes as Spurs prepare for their first competitive match of the 2025-26 season. Romero's first test as permanent captain will be against European champions PSG in Helsinki. - AFP

Comcast debuts soccer-focused video package ahead of World Cup
FILE PHOTO: The Official FIFA World Cup Trophy is seen before a news conference in New York City, New York, U.S., June 17, 2022. REUTERS/Eduardo Munoz/File Photo (Reuters) -Internet and media giant Comcast launched a soccer-focused video package exclusively for its Xfinity customers on Wednesday, as it looks to attract sports fans ahead of major events, including the 2026 FIFA World Cup. Comcast has priced the offering, called "World Soccer Ticket", at $85 a month. The bundle includes nearly 60 broadcast, cable news, and sports channels, along with a premium subscription of NBCUniversal's Peacock streaming service. As cord cutting continues to hit traditional TV revenue, live sports content has emerged as one of the few formats that still draw millions of eyeballs and boost advertising demand. The package comes ahead of the 2026 FIFA World Cup, which will be jointly hosted by the United States, Canada and Mexico. Every match of the quadrennial tournament will be available in English on Fox and in Spanish across Telemundo, Universo, and Peacock, Comcast said on Wednesday. The plan will also offer live coverage of major international leagues and competitions, including Premier League, UEFA Champions League, LaLiga, Liga MX and CONCACAF Champions Cup. Besides, the package will include live coverage of other major sports and leagues like the NFL and NBA on the package's networks and Peacock. Customers can access the package through X1 set-top box and Xfinity Stream TV app on supported platforms like Apple TV and Fire TV. Comcast's new offering is expected to drive demand for its networks like NBC and boost subscriber growth for its flagship streaming platform, Peacock, which had 41 million paid subscribers at the end of June, far fewer than rival platforms. Media companies are aggressively pursuing major sports deals to strengthen their streaming platforms. The newly merged Paramount secured exclusive U.S. broadcast rights to the Ultimate Fighting Championship for seven years in a $7.7 billion deal on Monday.
