ICAI asks over 14 lakh members to stand in solidarity with armed forces and nation
New Delhi [India], May 10 (ANI): The Institute of Chartered Accountants of India (ICAI), the world's largest accounting body, set up by an Act of Parliament under the Chartered Accountants Act, 1949 for the regulation and development of the profession of Chartered Accountancy in India, has extended its support to the Government and Indian Army for the recent action against terrorist hideouts in Pakistan and Pakistan occupied Kashmir.
With a vast network comprising over 1.4 million members and students spread across 5 Regional Councils, 177 Branches in India, as well as more than 40,000 members in 52 Overseas Chapters and 33 Representative Offices across 47 countries, ICAI is uniquely positioned to make a significant impact in humanitarian efforts. In this time of heightened tension, the Institute reaffirms its steadfast commitment to national solidarity and stands ready to support the country and its people.
ICAI has a widespread presence across nearly 17,000 pin codes in India, including over 13 branches located near the India-Pakistan border. Chartered Accountants in these bordering regions are well-positioned to go beyond symbolic support by actively volunteering their time, expertise and resources to assist local communities and authorities wherever required. Through ICAI robust local networks, members and student volunteers can collaborate with government agencies, NGOs and relief organizations to deliver timely and effective aid to those in need.
Charanjot Singh Nanda, President, ICAI, lauded the heroic efforts of the Indian Armed Forces and made a clarion call to the entire CA fraternity across the nation to stand with our armed forces, he emphasized that the over 14 Lakh financial soldiers of ICAI are committed not just in words but also in meaningful action.
During his address to the CA Fraternity, he said, 'Operation 'SINDOOR' is a powerful message from a New Bharat, one that asserts there will be no compromise when it comes to protecting India's sovereignty. ICAI has always lived by the principle of 'Nation First'. In every storm that has shaken our country, we have stood strong as a pillar of support to our motherland,'.
The President further urged all ICAI members and students to rise to the occasion, remain alert and uphold the highest ideals of service by protecting the integrity and security of the nation.
'Let us come together in this critical hour. Let the CA fraternity lead by example, proving that we are not only financial stewards but also pillars of strength, compassion and resilience for our nation,' he added.

ICAI has a proud legacy of contributing to national causes and supporting citizens during times of crisis. During the 1971 Indo-Pak War, ICAI members provided pro-bono services to the families of martyrs. In the darkest days of the COVID-19 pandemic, ICAI extended support to grieving families, offered scholarships to students who lost parents and waived fees so the dreams could continue. Members of the Institute also organized food drives, blood and plasma donation camps and vaccination camps not only for our members but public at large. (ANI)

India's forex reserves decline $1.2 billion to $691.5 in week ending May 30
Mumbai (Maharashtra) [India], June 6 (ANI): India's foreign exchange reserves (forex) slumped USD 1.237 billion to USD 691.485 billion in the week ending May 30, official data released by the Reserve Bank of India showed on Friday. RBI Governor Sanjay Malhotra said the foreign exchange kitty is sufficient to meet 11 months of the country's imports and about 96 per cent of external debt, announcing the outcome of the Monetary Policy Committee (MPC) decisions earlier today. The RBI governor added, 'Overall, India's external sector remains resilient as key external sector vulnerability indicators continue to improve. We remain confident of meeting our external financing requirements.' Despite the marginal weekly decline, the forex kitty is close to its all-time high of USD 704.89 billion in September 2024. The latest RBI data showed that India's foreign currency assets (FCA), the largest component of foreign exchange reserves, stood at USD 584.215 billion. According to RBI data, the gold reserves currently amount to USD 84.305 billion. Central banks worldwide increasingly accumulate safe-haven gold in their foreign exchange reserves kitty, and India is no exception. The share of gold maintained by the Reserve Bank of India (RBI) in its foreign exchange reserves has almost doubled since 2021. In 2023, India added around USD 58 billion to its foreign exchange reserves, contrasting with a cumulative decline of USD 71 billion in 2022. In 2024, the reserves rose by a little over USD 20 billion. Foreign exchange reserves, or FX reserves, are assets held by a nation's central bank or monetary authority, primarily in reserve currencies such as the US Dollar, with smaller portions in the Euro, Japanese Yen, and Pound Sterling. The RBI often intervenes by managing liquidity, including selling dollars, to prevent steep Rupee depreciation. The RBI strategically buys dollars when the Rupee is strong and sells when it weakens. Runway upgrade at Delhi airport to disrupt 100 flights; 57 cancelled, 43 rescheduled
New Delhi [India], June 6 (ANI): Delhi International Airport Limited (DIAL) CEO Videh Kumar Jaipuriar on Friday announced that Delhi Airport will temporarily shut Runway 10/28 for a three-month period to carry out critical upgrades aimed at improving fog-time operations. This will impact around 100 flights in all. Speaking to ANI, CEO of Delhi International Airport Limited (DIAL), Videh Kumar Jaipuriar, said, 'Out of the four runways that the Delhi airport has, there is one runway 10/28 that we are planning to shut down for three months because there are upgrades that are required.' As part of the degradation, DIAL will update the current ILS (Instrument Landing System), which is already out of order. DIAL will also make the runway CAT III-B compliant. CAT III-B is an advanced landing system that allows aircraft to land in extremely low visibility conditions. Due to the degradation activity undertaken by the DIAL, 100 flights are going to be affected overall, out of which over 43 flights are going to be rescheduled. 'The new schedule has already been published, and 57 departure flights are going to be cancelled. If you put it in the perspective of the percentage, then overall, for Delhi airport, about 7 per cent of the Delhi airport capacity flights will be cancelled,' said the DIAL CEO. 'We also ensure that the cancellations are not something that is impacting in a big way. So, in most of the sectors where we had multiple connectivity, their 8-9 per cent of the connectivity was reduced so that overall that sector does not get impacted badly,' he added. Global credit rating firm Fitch Ratings in April the current year upgraded Delhi International Airport Limited to BB+, kipping the outlook as stable. In its commentary, the rating firm said that the improvement in the financial profile is likely to be materially higher than its previous expectations. DIAL benefits from a stable regulatory regime with revenue and capex determined by the Airports Economic Regulatory Authority of India (AERA). The company also benefits from its position as India's largest airport by passenger traffic and the gateway to the national capital region with a catchment population of over 30 million, supporting strong long-term growth prospects despite some competition from the proposed opening of Noida International Airport in the financial year 2026. Vice President Dhankar demands investigation into 'cash haul' incident involving Justice Yashwant Varma
Chandigarh (Punjab) [India], June 6 (ANI): Vice President Jagdeep Dhankhar on Friday expressed concern over the recent cash controversy involving former Delhi High Court judge Justice Yashwant Varma. A substantial amount of unaccounted cash was discovered at Justice Varma's residence after a fire broke out in mid-March. The incident has sparked widespread debate and scrutiny. He questioned the absence of an investigation into the issue and why no FIR was registered for the same. The Vice President said, 'A painful incident happened in mid-March in Delhi at the residence of a sitting judge. There was a cash haul, obviously tainted, unaccounted, illegal. And unexplained!... It appeared in the public domain after 6-7 days....' Interacting with members of the Punjab and Haryana High Court Bar Association in Chandigarh today, the Vice-President further added, 'I have raised the issue. Ultimately, is that the answer if a motion is brought to remove a judge? If there has been a crime, a culpable act shaking the foundations of democracy -- the rule of law, why wasn't it punished? We have lost more than three months, and the investigation has not been initiated. Whenever you go to court, they ask why the FIR was delayed.' Earlier on March 22, the Chief Justice of India constituted a three-member committee, comprising Justice Sheel Nagu, Chief Justice of the High Court of Punjab and Haryana, Justice GS Sandhawalia, Chief Justice of the High Court of Himachal Pradesh, and Justice Anu Sivaraman, Judge of the High Court of Karnataka, to examine the allegations against Justice Yashwant Varma, a sitting judge of the High Court of Delhi. The committee concluded its investigation and presented its findings in a report dated May 3. Referring to the same, Dhankar questioned if the committee has 'a constitutional sanction.' 'Does the committee of judges have a constitutional sanction? Does it have statutory sanction? Can this report result in any outcome? Can this report, by itself, be actionable? If a judge removal mechanism is there, the Constitution says this removal mechanism can be initiated either in the Lok Sabha or the Rajya Sabha. This is the only way. Then this committee cannot substitute for an FIR investigation...,' Dhankar said. He stressed that 'even the President and Governors' are immune to prosecution 'till they are in office', and that no other body is provided with this immunity. The Vice President further hoped that an FIR would be filed soon. 'I find it very soothing and must congratulate you that the bar associations in the country are active on it. I hope an FIR is filed,' Dhankar stated. On April 5, Justice Yashwant Varma was sworn in as a judge of the Allahabad High Court under unusual and contentious circumstances. Departing from the customary public ceremony, his oath-taking was conducted privately, a decision that has garnered significant scrutiny. This development coincides with an ongoing investigation into allegations concerning the recovery of partially burnt sacks of cash at his residence weeks prior. Despite his formal induction, Justice Varma has not been assigned any judicial or administrative responsibilities, according to court insiders. His transfer from the Delhi High Court to the Allahabad High Court has been met with scepticism, particularly following the filing of a Public Interest Litigation (PIL) before the Lucknow bench of the Allahabad High Court. The PIL urged the Chief Justice to defer the swearing-in until the inquiry reached its conclusion. The controversy has elicited strong reactions from the legal community. The Allahabad High Court Bar Association has openly criticised the Collegium's decision, expressing its disapproval through a strongly worded letter addressed to the Chief Justice and other judges. The association condemned the appointment, declaring, 'We are not a dumping ground,' and called for enhanced transparency and accountability in judicial appointments. As the inquiry progresses, Justice Varma's future role within the Allahabad High Court remains uncertain. Legal experts and observers continue to monitor developments closely, as the situation has raised broader concerns regarding judicial integrity and the processes governing appointments within India's judiciary. According to the official website of the Allahabad High Court, Justice Varma obtained his Law degree from Rewa University in 1992 and was enrolled as an Advocate on August 8 of the same year. Throughout his career, he primarily practised civil law, handling cases related to Constitutional Law, Industrial Disputes, Corporate Matters, Taxation, Environmental Issues, and related fields. He served as special counsel for the Allahabad High Court from 2006 until his elevation in 2012. (ANI)
