Whale killed off Jersey Shore after bashing boat, throwing passenger into water

News.com.au04-08-2025
A woman was knocked from her boat off the Jersey Shore when a distressed whale bashed the vessel – sending her flying into the waves, shocking footage shows.
The incident happened on Sunday off Barnegat Bay in New Jersey, when a small motor boat came across a 20-foot minke whale that was seen thrashing in shallow waters.
The whale's fin and back could be seen lurching out of the water in evident desperation.
When the boat approached, the whale became even more frantic and wound up under its hull – eventually tipping the vessel during the thrashing and sending a woman into the water.
She was quickly pulled to safety, and wasn't injured.
The incident was caught on camera by Kim Mancini, who said the whale seemed to be in trouble before boaters arrived.
'It was really in distress. That's when it would go under boats, it was a crazy experience,' she told 6abc.
The whale appeared to be struggling to get to get to shallower water, Mancini said.
Sadly, the animal eventually died, according to reports.

Emergency services rushed to the Blackwood River in Bridgetown, about 260km south of Perth, following reports a 23-year old women entered the water and was caught in a strong current that was 10m deep at 4.30pm on Tuesday. The woman was swept about 100m downstream from the town centre and managed to grab hold of a partially submerged tree. A police spokesman said the woman was distressed and crying for help when a 77-year old man who witnessed the incident came to her aid. The elderly man managed to drag the woman to the river's edge until Senior Constable Mike Smith arrived and entered the water to keep her afloat. 'Despite experiencing extreme fatigue, the 77-year-old man further assisted police by guiding emergency services to the hard-to-reach location while Senior Constable Smith kept the woman safe and secure at the river's edge,' a police spokesman said. Paramedics and fire and emergency services arrived soon after and the woman was safely removed from the water. She was taken to the Bridgetown Hospital for medical treatment.

Hunter Valley flood victim's body found after days-long search

A body believed to be that of a missing 26-year-old woman has been found by volunteer rescuers in NSW's Hunter Valley. The Chinese national was swept away on Saturday 2 August after downpours flooded the Hunter Region. The woman was a passenger in a Mini Countryman driven by a 27-year-old woman on Old North Road in Rothbury. Her body was found shortly after 11am on Wednesday morning, said Inspector Justin Cornes from the Hunter Valley Police Department 'Our forensic specialist police along with our detectives are on the scene currently,' he said. 'Our thoughts go out to the family of the missing 26-year-old for what has been and will continue to be an extremely difficult time for them.' On Sunday, Hunter Valley District Commander Superintendent Steve Laksa said both women had tried to get out of the car when it was clear they were stuck, but were swept away 'with the rising and rapidly running causeway waters'. He said both were 'swept into the causeway' but the driver managed to surface and collect her dog, which was in the back seat of the car. The driver made her way to the causeway's bank, while the 26-year-old passenger was pulled further away, and eventually found about 450m from the causeway. The passenger had lived in Australia for three years and worked as an engineer. A large-scale search was launched for the woman involving local police, the Rescue and Bomb Disposal Unit, Marine Area Command, NSW SES, VRA Rescue NSW, and the NSW RFS. It was volunteer rescuers from VRA Rescue NSW who found the body. Rainfall totals as high as 137mm have triggered flash flooding in NSW over the weekend, and the NSW State Emergency Service responded to more than 1455 incidents caused by the severe weather, including more than 100 stuck vehicles. More than 40 flood warnings were issued north of Newcastle, and parts of the Upper Hunter town of Scone were ordered to evacuate immediately due to 'major flooding'. At the time Superintendent Laksa urged people to follow warnings about floodwaters. 'I'd just ask the community to take heed of those warnings and do not enter any waterway,' he said. The body is yet to be formally identified, and a report will be prepared for the coroner. Brendan Kearns Cadet Journalist Brendan Kearns is a cadet journalist with News Corp Australia. Body found in search for woman swept away by floodwaters near Cessnock

A body has been found during the search for a woman who was swept into floodwaters in the NSW Hunter region on Saturday night. The search, which has been operating during daylight hours since the 26-year-old Chinese woman went missing, involved multiple agencies, including rescue divers. In a statement, a NSW Police spokesperson said Volunteer Rescue Association members found a body on Wednesday. "While the body is yet to be formally identified, it is believed to be that of the missing woman," the statement said. The 26-year-old woman was in Australia on a work visa and was swept away by floodwaters when the car she was travelling in was driven over a causeway in a small car at Rothbury near Cessnock. The 27-year-old driver was able to escape the water, finding safety on an embankment with her dog, where she was then rescued. Police said the women were attempting to return to Sydney, where they lived, after becoming concerned about the risk of flooding. A report will be prepared for the NSW coroner. More to come.
