FIW Roundtable: Which Notre Dame offensive player we believe breaks out this fall

USA Todaya day ago
With Notre Dame football's fall camp underway, it's pretty easy to look ahead to what could be in store for the Irish in 2025.
They'll enter the year with massive expectations, many pundits expecting another berth into the College Football Playoff. The schedule is front loaded, opening on road against Miami, then hosting Texas A&M, both ranked opponents.
For Notre Dame to make a return trip to the CFP, they'll need some players to step up and fill voids that were stalwarts last year. The Fighting Irish Wire crew of Tim Healey, Dave Miller and Michael Chen will make their best guesses over the course of the next few weeks as to what this Notre Dame season will show us.
Let's start off with who we believe will be a breakout player on offense.
Tim Healey - contributor
Is it a breakout if Jeremiyah Love does what he did last year, and then some? OK, fine, I guess I have to pick someone who wasn't one of last year's stars.
I'm inclined to think that whoever wins the quarterback battle might be the breakout star. Easy answer, I know, but both CJ Carr and Kenny Minchey could be that guy. Carr seems to pass the eye test, and Minchey has knowledge of the offense and running ability.
Another possible breakout is wide receiver Jaden Greathouse. He had a solid year last year, but if the new passer is a success, he could take a leap forward.
If he does, that would be huge. Notre Dame's passing game wasn't exactly bad last year, but it wasn't as consistently effective as the ground game. If the passing game becomes as much of a threat as the running game, the Irish might be even better in 2025 than in 2024 which is why I'm taking Greathouse.
Dave Miller - contributor
There probably weren't a ton of college football observers who thought Kenny Minchey would push CJ Carr for the starting quarterback job, but here we are. Fighting Irish head coach Marcus Freeman is expected to decide on a starter coming out of Notre Dame's scrimmage this weekend, and I still ultimately think Carr will be the guy and have success with his surrounding playmakers in this offense.
But picking a quarterback is the easy way out.
So I'm also going with Greathouse, who finished the 2024 season with two consecutive 100-yard receiving games and three touchdowns. The rising junior shined during the College Football Playoff run, and he has a chance to be a matchup nightmare if he's lined up in the slot.
Bringing in Virginia transfer Malachi Fields to the receiving room was huge for this offense, but he's already a proven commodity. Greathouse has a chance to become a household name starting with the season opener at Miami.
Michael Chen - site lead
While I think that Greathouse is a great pick to breakout, he just seems like the obvious choice to me, so I'm staying away from picking him.
There are more than a few others that I considered, like offensive lineman Will Black (too young), wide receiver Will Pauling (new to scheme), running back Aneyas Williams (not enough playing time), but eventually settled on offensive lineman Guerby Lambert.
Isn't not a sexy choice, but it's looking like he's playing himself into a starting spot after entering the program as one of the top offensive lineman in the 2024 cycle. Lambert got his feet wet last fall, and while it was a redshirt year, it was put to good use. Getting on the field during the CFP was great, even though it was just on special teams.
While offensive lineman coach Joe Rudolph hasn't named his starters yet, the chip above shows him with the starting group. There isn't as much experience with this group as there was last year, and someone will have to step up with the injury to Charles Jagusah. My bet is on Lambert.

ESPN makes Georgia football bowl predictions

ESPN has released their 2025 college football bowl projections and both ESPN analysts Mark Schlabach and Kyle Bonagura predict that the Georgia Bulldogs will make the College Football Playoff. Bonagura predicts that Georgia will have the highest ranked team that does not get a first-round bye. He thinks Georgia will end up as the No. 5 seed and will host the No. 12 seed Boise State Broncos on Friday, Dec. 19 or Saturday, Dec. 20. The Georgia-Boise State game would be held at Sanford Stadium in Athens, Georgia. Bonagura thinks Georgia will prevail against Boise State and advance to play No. 4 seed Clemson in the Orange Bowl in Miami, Florida. Bonagura thinks Georgia will beat Clemson in the quarterfinals before losing to No. 1 seed Texas in the semifinals (Fiesta Bowl in Phoenix, Arizona). He has Texas playing against his No. 2 seed Penn State in the national championship, which will be held in Miami. Schlabach has a similar projection for Georgia. He thinks the Bulldogs will end up as the No. 4 seed and have a first-round bye. He likes the talent Georgia has on its roster even though the Dawgs have a new starting quarterback in Gunner Stockton. Schlabach thinks Georgia, along with Alabama and Texas, could win the SEC. He predicts Georgia will play, and beat, the No. 5 seed Ohio State Buckeyes in Sugar Bowl on Jan. 1 in New Orleans, Louisiana. After advancing to the semifinals, Schlabach thinks Georgia will lose to No. 1 Texas in the Fiesta Bowl. Schlabach has Texas defeating No. 2 seed Clemson to win the national championship. Georgia enters the 2025 season with more modest expectations. However, if this Georgia team can grow over the course of the season, stay healthy at quarterback and other key positions, then we think Georgia is capable of making a championship run. Georgia is going to have to rely a lot on their sophomores, which are part of a former No. 1 recruiting class. As the season progresses, we envision Georgia growing in confidence and being a contender in the playoff. Follow UGAWire on Instagram or Threads!

Big Ten reportedly floating radical new College Football Playoff idea

The future of the College Football Playoff has been a key topic of discussion all offseason. ESPN secured a six-year, $7.8 billion contract that ensures the network will remain the sole media rights holder of the event through the 2031-32 season in March of 2024. But, whether or not the CFP stays at a 12-team model or expands has been one of the hot button issues of college football. After plenty of back-and-forth and a spring and summer full of discussion and disagreements, the Big Ten has suddenly introduced a radical new idea for the CFP's future. According to Pete Thamel of ESPN, the Big Ten has floated the idea of massive expansion to the College Football Playoff that could bring the postseason field to 24 or 28 teams. While Thamel reports that the idea is in its very early stages, the proposal eliminates conference title games and offers a large number of auto bids for all four power leagues, sources said. In the proposed 28-team CFP model, the Big Ten and SEC would each get seven auto bids while the ACC and Big 12 would each receive five. There would be two auto bids for the non-Power 4 conferences and two at-large teams. The 28-team format would put 20 playoff games on campus, which would accentuate the success of that from last year's CFP. The CFP Committee would seed the field and pick the at-large teams. Per Thamel, Big Ten commissioner Tony Petitti ran the idea by his conference Wednesday, sources said, and that it has begun being shared by others. In order to expand the playoff before the 2026 season, the expectation is that leaders need to reach a resolution before the end of this year. Momentum for a 16-team CFP format picked up steam throughout the spring, but leaders throughout college athletics haven't seen eye to eye on exactly how bids to a 16-team CFP would be awarded. The 5+11 model is supported by both the Big 12 and the ACC and it gained more support from the SEC after the league's spring meetings. The 5+11 model would include the five highest-ranked conference champions and 11 at-large bids. Another 16-team CFP model featured the Big Ten and SEC each receiving four automatic bids, the ACC and Big 12 receiving a pair of automatic qualifiers, one bid to the Group of 6 champion and then three at-large bids. Live updates and highlights from Dolphins' second joint practice with Lions

The Miami Dolphins received a rude welcome from the Detroit Lions when they arrived for a pair of joint practices this week. In the first of two joint practices between the teams ahead of a Saturday preseason contest, the Lions dominated the Dolphins. Reporters in attendance Wednesday called it a "lopsided" practice where the "Lions just out-everything'd the Dolphins." 'We're going to watch this tape when we get back and then we're just going to improve," Dolphins offensive tackle Patrick Paul told reporters after the practice. "That's the best part of it. Going after it again. You know what you're getting, you watch the film. You know what you made mistakes on and then you go back the next day with conviction." That second chance comes Thursday with the Dolphins back on the practice field in Detroit. We'll be tracking all the updates here: Dolphins-Lions joint practice updates This will be updated throughout the day The Dolphins are feeling good about their Thursday efforts Both teams wrap up with incompletions Dee Eskridge has the highlight of the day Cam Smith making some noise 11-on-11 not going as well as 7-on-7 for Dolphins Lions receivers are still proving to be a tough cover Dolphins defense finding more success Tempers are flaring in Detroit Dolphins off to a much better start De'Von Achane, Zach Sieler appear to be out of action Thursday Chop Robinson will be back on the practice field This article originally appeared on Dolphins Wire: Dolphins vs. Lions: Live updates, highlights from 2nd joint practice
