Priyank Kharge Asks Why MEA First Denied Him Clearance to Visit the US, Before Granting Permission Later

The Wire4 hours ago

New Delhi: Congress leader and Karnataka minister Priyank Kharge on Saturday (June 21) said after initially denying him a clearance to visit the US, the Ministry of External Affairs (MEA) has now granted him a clearance.
Kharge questioned the reasons for this back and forth by the MEA and demanded an explanation.
'So in a U-turn, the Ministry of External Affairs has now decided to revoke its earlier decision and grant me a clearance for an official visit to the United States. I had sought permission on 15 May to travel between 14–27 June to represent the Government of Karnataka at two major global forums and over 25 official meetings with top companies, universities and institutions for collaborations and pitch for investments,' Kharge wrote on X on Saturday.
Kharge added that the application for the visit of minister and officers' delegation to the US made on May 15 was rejected on June 4. Thereafter, another application for officers' delegation without Minister made on June 6 was cleared on June 11.
'My application was denied without any official explanation. On 19 June, I addressed a press conference, laying out the full chronology, questioning the basis of the denial and raising concerns about possible political interference. The matter was widely reported in the media. By the evening of the same day, the MEA revoked its earlier denial and issued a No Objection clearance dated 19 June,' said Kharge.
He added that the clearance was received 36 days after his original application, 15 days after the official denial and five days after his scheduled departure.
'The timing raises serious questions: Why was the clearance denied in the first place? Was the previous order revoked to avoid accountability after the matter became public? What is the point of granting clearance after the key events are either over or nearing completion? Will the MEA now avoid explaining the original decision by pointing to the belated approval?' asked Kharge.
Kharge was scheduled to attend the BIO International Convention in Boston and the Design Automation Conference (DAC) in San Francisco, Deccan Herald had earlier reported.
'While the Centre gives us slogans like 'Make in India,' 'Digital India', 'National Quantum Mission' and 'India AI Mission,' the real work to realise these aspirations is happening here in Karnataka. They coin the vision, but when we do the work to bring investments, create jobs and position India as a global leader – they block us,' he added.
Kharge said that Karnataka deserves answer on the issue.
'The Prime Minister once said MAGA MIGA = MEGA. But what does that even mean in practice, when the very state driving India's tech and innovation engine is denied the support it needs to lead globally?' said Kharge.

Replace India's national flag with a saffron flag: Veteran BJP leader N Sivarajan

PALAKKAD: Inviting widespread outrage, likely to escalate political debate in days to come, veteran BJP leader and former National Council member N Sivarajan made a controversial call to replace India's national flag with a saffron flag. The incident occurred during a public protest organised by the BJP at the Anchuvilakku Junction in Palakkad, where the party accused both the LDF and UDF of insulting 'Bharat Mata'. During the protest, Sivarajan, who is the BJP sitting councillor in Palakkad municipality, stated that political parties should be prohibited from using flags resembling the national tricolour. Targeting the Congress and NCP, he further said they should adopt distinct flags -- suggesting that the Congress would use a green flag. Sivarajan went on to say that Sonia Gandhi and Rahul Gandhi, who he alleged were ignorant of Indian history, could instead fly the Italian flag.

'Power over principles will backfire,' warns ex-Gujarat minister Nanubhai as he slams BJP's changing culture

AHMEDABAD: Former Education Minister Nanubhai Vanani has launched a sharp attack on the BJP's internal culture, warning that 'gaining power by sidelining principles' could backfire. Despite the BJP's record-breaking win in the 2022 Gujarat Assembly elections with 156 seats and its grip over all 8 municipal corporations, Vanani has raised alarm. In a strongly worded letter, he questioned the means by which the party is securing power, saying people should not feel cheated after three decades of loyalty. His statement strikes at the heart of BJP's current political strategy in Gujarat. In a scathing seven-page letter titled 'The Very Formula That Led to Congress's Downfall Now Threatens the BJP Too,' Nanubhai Vanani delivers a blistering critique of his own party, warning that the BJP is treading the same self-destructive path once taken by the Congress. Senior BJP leader and former Education Minister Nanubhai Vanani has accused his own party of abandoning its ideological core in blind pursuit of power. 'The entire culture of the Bharatiya Janata Party has changed,' Vanani wrote, warning that the party is now driven by a ruthless mantra: "Jo Jeeta Wahi Sikandar." But, he asks, 'Where have these Sikandars come from? What's their ideology, what's their morality—does anyone even care anymore?' Vanani claims that the BJP is recruiting leaders with no connection to its values, thereby eroding its foundational ideology. 'This reckless induction is not just weakening us—it's destroying the very spirit that built this party,' he warned. He added that the BJP's growing tilt toward power-centric ideology is not only dangerous but suicidal. 'Power means nothing if it's gained by dumping principles. True power lies in winning with principles at the core,' he emphasized.

Hope Israel, Iran stop attacking each other soon: Omar

Wondering on what basis Israel attacked Iran, he said, 'A few days ago, the US intelligence in-charge said before the Senate and Congress that Iran is not closer to getting a nuclear weapon. So, if America felt that a few days ago, then why did Israel attack Iran?' 'It is obvious that there is some politics behind it but we hope that this cycle stops sooner and the issues are resolved through dialogue,' he added. 'We can only hope and pray that the war stops. The situation is bad. This should not have happened,' Abdullah told reporters in central Kashmir's Ganderbal, his assembly constituency. Srinagar, Jun 21 (PTI) Jammu and Kashmir Chief Minister Omar Abdullah on Saturday expressed hope that Israel and Iran will soon stop attacking each other and resolve their issues through dialogue. Abdullah visited many areas in his assembly constituency and said it was his duty as the local MLA. 'The people of Ganderbal have sent me to represent them and serve them and I will try my best to meet their expectations. So, since I became the MLA, we have hastened the development progress here. 'Today, I inaugurated one project, a marriage hall and laid the foundation stone of a bridge, which was an old demand,' he said. Abdullah said when he sought votes from the people of Ganderbal, he had told them that he would serve them as an MLA and address their issues. 'I had told them I will not remain away for five years after taking their votes. Despite having the responsibility of the whole J-K, I have never forgotten that the people of Ganderbal did me a huge favour by electing me from here and that is why I did not leave this seat,' he said. Abdullah won the assembly polls from two seats -“ Ganderbal and Budgam. He vacated Budgam after being sworn-in as the chief minister. Asked about the upcoming annual Amarnath yatra, Abdullah said he was hopeful that yatris will come in large numbers to visit the Amarnath cave shrine. 'We hope they return safely as well. The responsibility of their security lies with the LG and Raj Bhavan, and I hope all the measure will be taken for their safety and security. Rest of the responsibilities -“ be it medical or infrastructure -“ we have fulfilled those,' he added. PTI SSB ZMN This report is auto-generated from PTI news service.
