'Power over principles will backfire,' warns ex-Gujarat minister Nanubhai as he slams BJP's changing culture
AHMEDABAD: Former Education Minister Nanubhai Vanani has launched a sharp attack on the BJP's internal culture, warning that 'gaining power by sidelining principles' could backfire.
Despite the BJP's record-breaking win in the 2022 Gujarat Assembly elections with 156 seats and its grip over all 8 municipal corporations, Vanani has raised alarm.
In a strongly worded letter, he questioned the means by which the party is securing power, saying people should not feel cheated after three decades of loyalty. His statement strikes at the heart of BJP's current political strategy in Gujarat.
In a scathing seven-page letter titled 'The Very Formula That Led to Congress's Downfall Now Threatens the BJP Too,' Nanubhai Vanani delivers a blistering critique of his own party, warning that the BJP is treading the same self-destructive path once taken by the Congress.
Senior BJP leader and former Education Minister Nanubhai Vanani has accused his own party of abandoning its ideological core in blind pursuit of power. 'The entire culture of the Bharatiya Janata Party has changed,' Vanani wrote, warning that the party is now driven by a ruthless mantra: "Jo Jeeta Wahi Sikandar."
But, he asks, 'Where have these Sikandars come from? What's their ideology, what's their morality—does anyone even care anymore?'
Vanani claims that the BJP is recruiting leaders with no connection to its values, thereby eroding its foundational ideology. 'This reckless induction is not just weakening us—it's destroying the very spirit that built this party,' he warned. He added that the BJP's growing tilt toward power-centric ideology is not only dangerous but suicidal. 'Power means nothing if it's gained by dumping principles. True power lies in winning with principles at the core,' he emphasized.

BJP worker found dead in Bengal's Hooghly, party alleges ‘political murder'
A Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) worker, Sheikh Bakibulla, was found dead under mysterious circumstances in his house at Goghat in Hooghly district in West Bengal on Saturday (June 21, 2025). Mr. Bakibulla was reportedly found hanging in his house this morning. The BJP has alleged that it was a 'political murder'. The police sent the body for post-mortem on Saturday and initiated an investigation. 'In this specific case at the Goghat police station, a First Information Report (FIR) has been registered against unknown persons under section 103(1) of the Bharatiya Nyay Sanhita (murder). After the post-mortem examination, the surgeon verbally opined that the death was due to hanging,' a high-ranking official of the West Bengal Police told The Hindu. The father of the deceased, Sheikh Abdullah, told reporters that Mr. Bakibullah was an activist of the Communist Party of India (Marxist) before he joined the BJP. 'Out of pain and misery, he joined the BJP. When he was in the CPI(M), the Trinamool (ruling Trinamool Congress) was after his life. They had assaulted him multiple times in the past,' Mr. Abdullah said on Saturday after his son's body was discovered. Mr. Bakibulla's bereaved widow said that her husband had gone to bed along with her the previous night, and that she was unaware of anything unusual happening until morning. 'His hands were tied, and there was blood at the spot. It is clear that this is a murder. We have a clear demand for the police administration — immediately send the body for post-mortem and find out who did it. This cannot be covered up,' Biman Ghosh, the BJP MLA of Hooghly's Pursurah, said. The saffron party also took to X to accuse 'TMC-backed goons' of being behind Mr. Bakibullah's death. 'Sheikh Bakibulla, a BJP worker from Goghat, was hanged with hands tied. TMC-backed goons did it. No arrest. No action. This is not just a murder, this is targeted political violence in Bengal under Mamata Banerjee,' the post by BJP West Bengal read. Meanwhile, the Trinamool Congress denied the allegations and accused the BJP of 'adding political colour' to the tragedy. In other developments, at least two people died and several were injured in a crude bomb explosion in the Labpur police station area of West Bengal's Birbhum district on Saturday.

Chhattisgarh: Cong raps school cuts, threatens massive protest over rationalisation policy
Raipur: Chhattisgarh Congress legislator and AICC (All India Congress Committee) secretary Devendra Yadav has launched a scathing attack on the BJP-led state government over its on-going teacher rationalisation policy, calling it an anti-education and anti-employment move. A major state-level protest is planned for Teachers' Day on September 5. Addressing a press briefing at Indira Bhawan, Yadav alleged that the policy would result in the abolition of over 45,000 teaching posts and the closure of 10,463 schools across the state, disproportionately affecting tribal regions like Bastar, Surguja, and Jashpur. CM Yadav claimed that the rationalisation process is designed to avoid new teacher recruitment despite the government's earlier promise to fill 58,000 vacancies. He said the new student-teacher ratio norms -- raising the primary school ratio from 21:1 to 30:1 and middle school from 26:1 to 35:1 -- would eliminate one-third of existing posts. He also warned that the burden on remaining teachers would become unmanageable, with two teachers expected to handle 18 subjects and additional non-teaching duties. The Congress leader accused the government of by-passing consultations with teachers' unions, parent associations, and educationists before implementing the policy. Chief Minister Vishnu Deo Sai has reiterated that the goal is to ensure equitable access to quality education across the state, especially in remote tribal regions. Despite the government's assurances, protests by teachers' unions have intensified, with black armband demonstrations and outreach to parents underway.
