How a four-year-old's wish changed the anganwadi food menu from upma to biryani in Kerala
Kerala's women and child welfare department has revised the anganwadi food menu to include egg biryani and pulao, following a viral video of a 4-year-old boy's request to replace upma with biryani and chicken fry. The revised menu was unveiled on Tuesday by Women and Child Development Minister Veena George at the state-level inauguration of anganwadis' Praveshanolsavam in Pathanamthitta.
The new menu aims to reduce sugar and salt intake while increasing calories and protein to support child growth, aligned with nutritional standards. Egg and milk will be provided on three days a week, compared to two days earlier. The menu will cover breakfast, lunch, and general feeding, marking the first time a unified food menu is implemented for anganwadi children across the state.
The boy, Trijal S Sundhar, popularly known as Shanku, is currently in Qatar with his family. His mother, Aswathy Ashok, shared that Shanku is excited about the change. 'We will be returning to our native place by mid-July, and he will join school then,' she said. The family hails from Prayar near Oachira in Alappuzha district.
Aswathy explained that the video was not planned. 'Shanku's father returned to Qatar after his choroonu (first rice meal fed auspiciously). I used to take Shanku's photographs and videos and post them on Instagram for his father to see. The biryani video too was shot just like that,' she said.
She added, 'Shanku doesn't like upma and his favourite food is porridge and black-eyed pea. Upma was being served in the anganwadis daily and he developed a hatred towards it. He made the request for biryani and chicken fry while having biryani at home.'

Minister Veena George had shared the video on Facebook earlier and promised to consider the demand, which has now been fulfilled through the revised menu.

Multigrain toast vs oatmeal: Which is better for the gut? Harvard doctor ranks popular breakfast foods
Dr. Saurabh Sethi, a gastroenterologist, ranks common breakfast foods based on their impact on gut health, emphasizing scientific backing over trends. Multigrain toast and Greek yogurt score high due to fiber and probiotics, while sugary cereals and breakfast sausages rank low due to high sugar, processed content, and potential harm to gut bacteria and overall health. Breakfast is considered the most important meal of the day. So what we consume holds a huge significance. It can reflect on the entire day's eating pattern, wellness, and mood. Eating healthy is crucial for overall health and also to keep diseases at bay. So, what is a healthy breakfast according to you? Do you reach for a toast or breakfast sausages? Dr. Saurabh Sethi, a gastroenterologist trained at Harvard and Stanford, with over a million Instagram followers, has now ranked some of the most common breakfast foods based on their impact on gut health. 'This ranking is backed by science, not trends,' he stresses. Multigrain toast Multigrain toast is one of the popular breakfast options preferred by people across the world. Dr. Sethi gives it an 8 out of 10. This is because multigrain toast has high fiber content and complex carbohydrates. When paired with nutrient-dense toppings like avocado or nut butter, the benefits multiply. Instant oatmeal (Pic courtesy: iStock) Instant oatmeal may be convenient, but it often contains added sugars and fewer nutrients. The gut doctor has ranked it 6 out of 10. The pre-packaged flavours can negate potential gut health benefits. Bagel New Yorkers often prefer bagels for breakfast, but it has only scored a 5 out of 10 in the gastroenterologist's opinion. This is because a bagel is made of refined flour, which has less fiber and can spike blood sugar. Whole-grain bagels are a better option if consumed sparingly. Greek yogurt Greek yogurt is a top breakfast choice, earning a 9 out of 10 from Dr. Sethi. Its high levels of live probiotics promote beneficial gut bacteria. This helps in digestion and boosts overall health. However, it is important to choose unsweetened varieties to maximize the benefits. Steel-cut oatmeal While on a grocery run, if you have oats on the list, reach for steel-cut oatmeal. Because it is a wholesome breakfast staple, it scored a 7 out of 10 from the doctor. It's minimally processed and has solid fiber content, which supports steady blood sugar and gut health. Sugary cereals No matter how tempting they are, sugary cereals are not a healthy breakfast option. Dr. Sethi has ranked it lowest at 1 out of 10. High sugar and low fiber content, such cereals, can starve beneficial gut bacteria, and also lead to gut issues. Stay ready with these 7 essential medical gadgets as COVID cases rise Breakfast sausages Breakfast sausages are often enjoyed by thousands if not millions, thinking its loaded with protein. However, breakfast sausages have earned a 2 out of 10. This is because sausages are often highly processed and cured meat, raising the risk of cardiovascular diseases. They contain high saturated fat and preservative content, which can lead to inflammation and upset the gut microbiome. One step to a healthier you—join Times Health+ Yoga and feel the change

Woman who lost 55 kg without dieting reveals what she eats in a day to maintain the weight: ‘I finally began to heal'
In a world obsessed with fad diets and quick fixes, achieving sustainable weight loss often feels like an uphill battle. Many struggle to find an approach that fits their lifestyle without feeling deprived or overwhelmed. Gurishq Kaur has shattered these myths by losing an incredible 55 kg without ever following a strict diet plan. She regularly shares glimpses of her inspiring journey with her Instagram family. In her April 17 post, she opens up about what she eats in a day to maintain her transformation and stay energised. (Also read: Weight loss coach who dropped 20 kgs shares 5 morning routine for faster fat loss ) "To start my day, I took some creatine and had a kiwi before my workout. It was chest day at the gym, and by the time I got home, I was starving for my big breakfast," Gurishq shared in her post. 'So I made myself two sourdough toasts, added some salad, and topped it all with a whole lot of tofu scramble. It's a high-protein, high-fibre breakfast that keeps me full for a long time.' A post shared by Gurishq Kaur (@gurishqkaur) On her way to college, she grabbed a keto bar as a quick snack. Later in the evening, once she returned home, she made herself a hearty salad bowl topped with walnuts and vegan meat burger patties for that extra dose of protein. "I was up pretty late at night and started feeling a little munchy again," she added. "So I made myself a nice little snack platter with some roasted chickpeas, superseed crackers, baby carrots, and a little cream cheese dip." Talking about her evolving relationship with food, Gurishq opened up in the caption, writing, "I've wasted enough time of my life over the ALL OR NOTHING mindset. I've tried every extreme diet under the sun, only for it to end in a binge and further damage how I viewed food and my body. I finally began to heal when I stopped seeing food as the enemy and started viewing it as fuel to nourish my body instead." She continued, "I no longer binge eat for comfort or reward myself with 'cheat meals' when I've been 'good.' I'm not a pet dog, my body deserves more dignity than that." Instead of strict tracking or rigid plans, Gurishq has embraced an intuitive eating approach. "I've been relearning how to enjoy food, understanding that some foods are more nutrient-dense than others and that I don't need to 'save' calories for a night out. It's only sustainable if it's a lifestyle, not a diet." She emphasised that she doesn't track calories but has developed a sense of what foods are calorie-dense versus nutrient-dense. Her daily meals are designed around whole foods, with a focus on protein and fibre in every meal. "My diet looks different every day based on three things," she says: She wraps up the post with an important reminder: "Please take this only as meal inspiration if anything, and base your diet on your own fitness goals and caloric needs!" Mouni Roy Steps Into Her Noir Era In A Dramatic Black Gown
Fresh off the Cannes red carpet, Mouni Roy is making fashion waves (again). Whether it's a big event or a themed photoshoot, the Bhootni actor knows how to top the sartorial charts. On another page of her fashion diaries, Mouni Roy embraced the 'noir' aesthetic. She slipped into a breathtaking gown from the shelves of designer label Alpana Neeraj. Her OOTD featured a black corseted top with a sweetheart neckline. The strapless wonder was a fitted masterpiece that hugged Mouni in all the right places. Silver sequinned geometric patterns adorned the bodice and looked beautiful. Sparkly, bejewelled elements added the right amount of pizzazz to the outfit. The floor-skimming netted skirt in a brilliant black shade deserves all the attention. The sheer fabric offered a risque twist, but Mouni carried it elegantly. Tiny sequins dominating the flowy skirt twinkled like bright stars, befitting of a star like Mouni. Thanks to her stylist Rishika Devnani, the 39-year-old looked no less than a princess in the fit. View this post on Instagram A post shared by mon (@imouniroy) Mouni Roy let her outfit steal the limelight as she opted for zero accessories. To be honest, we loved how she balanced drama and subtlety so gracefully. Roy's flawless skin served as the perfect canvas for her makeup. She went with a matte base and added some rosy blush and soft contour. Going for nude lips was simply the right move as she went heavy on the eyes. An intense interplay of eyeliner and kohl, coupled with mascara-coated fluttery lashes, contributed to the fierce smokey effect. She sealed her glamorous avatar with a messy bun, leaving two strands of hair open as they framed her face beautifully. Roy's sartorial outings are truly meant for the books. Do you agree?
