Their hunger to conquer African football has grown, but at home, they've had to settle for near misses. That's why lifting the MTN8 is expected to feature high on their to-do list this season. Their last domestic triumph came in this very competition in 2021/22, and by their high standards, that feels like a drought. The Brazilians bowed out in disappointing fashion in last year's MTN8, falling to Stellenbosch FC in both legs of the semi-final by a 1-0 scoreline. Heading into his first full season in charge, head coach Miguel Cardoso will be eager to make an early statement by guiding the Chloorkop-based side to MTN8 glory. 'My first season I was happy to be at the club and doing my best.' While disappointed after seeing the list of nominees, Rayners took it in stride. 'I was a bit disappointed because I had a good season last season with a good team and good players and coaches believed in me. I was disappointed when I saw the players that were nominated.' With talk swirling around Ribeiro's potential departure, the timing could be right for Rayners to further stake his claim as a key figure for both Sundowns and Bafana Bafana. The upcoming MTN8 could serve as his personal and team platform to deliver silverware and silence any lingering doubt. More than that, the tournament serves as a pre-season springboard—an opportunity to kickstart the campaign in fine fashion and dominate not only the league but every front.

Next Stay Close ✕ 'If you look at the PSL as a whole, the majority of clubs are changing the course of how they want to do things — they're going with a bit more youth,' Hunt told the media. 'I've always done it, but now you see a club like AmaZulu doing the same — they've gone in that direction with players who have speed and explosiveness. You'll see the same at Durban City, with younger squads becoming the norm for one reason or another.' 'You must never be scared to play young players because they'll always improve. We need the experience of older players, of course, but youth is the way to go.' Hunt believes KwaZulu-Natal has always been a hotbed of footballing talent, and now is the time to dig even deeper. 'Durban has always had an abundance of talent from way back, and players from this area have gone on to do big things. Maybe we need to unearth even more by doing what we're doing now.' AmaZulu assistant coach Siboniso Vilakazi welcomed Hunt's arrival in the province, saying it could create a positive ripple effect for youth development across KwaZulu-Natal. 'Our province is one of the richest in terms of talent,' said Vilakazi. 'When you have coaches who understand development and trust youngsters like Hunt, then the province will benefit a lot. 'And not just the province, but the national team as well — because if there's a filtration of good players at the highest level, then Bafana Bafana benefits. We've seen it in the past with the likes of Siyabonga Nomvethe and Sibusiso Zuma.' Durban City have yet to play a minute of Premiership football, but under Gavin Hunt, they already have an identity: youthful, fearless, and focused. 'Kaizer Chiefs are ready to compete': Sundowns legend hypes Amakhosi
Former Mamelodi Sundowns captain Hlompho Kekana has been impressed with Kaizer Chiefs and tipped them as a team to watch this season. Amakhosi spent three weeks in the Netherlands for their pre-season where they played several friendly matches with Dutch teams. In the five matches, Chiefs only won once but it was their performance that left fans uninspired. On Saturday, Nasreddine Nabi's men went down 3-2 on penalties to Asante Kotoko in the Toyota Cup. Kekana though, feels Kaizer Chiefs were impressive during the match and were unlucky not to win this past weekend. 'I've seen a better Kaizer Chiefs. I've seen a team that wants to win football matches,' Kekana told Soccerzone . 'I've seen distances in the midfield. I've seen distances as a team in the structure. You can tell this is a team that wants to compete this season,' he added. Amakhosi fans will have to wait until 10 August until their see their players in action for the first time this season. The MTN8 kicks off this weekend but for the second season running, the Glamour Boys will not be in the competition having finished outside the top 8. With six new players signed, Kaizer Chiefs will look to start the season strongly when they face Stellebosch FC in their opening Betway Premiership encounter on 10 August.
