Sleep on Austin Bashi\u00a0at your own risk after UFC on ESPN 71
Yannis (9-4 MMA, 0-1 UFC) stepped in on short notice to take on the highly touted Bashi (14-1 MMA, 1-1 UFC) and was a big underdog at the UFC Apex. Bashi showed why when he got his first UFC win with a standing rear-naked choke with about 90 seconds left in the opening round.
Bashi was supposed to fight Francis Marshall for his sophomore UFC outing until Marshall pulled out not long before the event. The 23-year-old Michigan-based featherweight said all he cared about was making sure he stayed on the card – and didn't care who the opponent was going to be.
Bashi was a heavy favorite when he came through and earned a contract on DWCS this past September. He then was expected to make a splash in his official UFC debut when he took on Christian Rodriguez in January.
But as a 3-1 favorite, Bashi dropped a decision for the first loss of his MMA career. He said that experience helped set him up for Saturday's win – and what he wants to happen going forward.
'After that last fight, I saw who my true supporters were, and I saw who was sleeping on me – and there were a bunch of people sleeping on me,' Bashi said at his post-fight news conference. 'This was to prove something to myself – not really to the world, but to prove something to myself how hungry I am and how bad I really want it.'

Rodolfo Vieira credits Fighting Nerds camp for UFC on ESPN 71 win, plans to return
LAS VEGAS – Rodolfo Vieira met the media Saturday after his unanimous decision win over Tresean Gore at UFC on ESPN 71. Vieira (11-3 MMA, 6-3 UFC) outworked Gore (6-4 MMA, 2-4 UFC) over 15 minutes at the UFC Apex and took home a pair of 30-27 scorecards to get back in the win column. It was a new feeling for the Brazilian. Before his win over Gore, he never had gotten his hand raised if he had to go the distance. Vieira said his training camp away from Orlando, Fla., with the Fighting Nerds team in Brazil had much to do with his mentality going into the fight. 'I didn't think the fight would be so tough, but I was ready for everything,' Vieira told MMA Junkie at his post-fight news conference. 'Of course, I was looking for a finish using my jiu-jitsu. I did my camp at Fighting Nerds in Brazil and I was feeling a huge difference. That was the first time I went there. … Now, I think I'm much better than the last fight. I'm more confident. I'm still improving.' Vieira said even though the training camps in Brazil will be hard when he has to be away from his wife and son, he thinks the payoff will be worth it. After back-to-back bonus-winning arm-triangle choke submission wins at middleweight over stern tests in Cody Brundage and Armen Petrosyan, Vieira slipped up against Andre Petroski in February and lost a decision. That helped prompt the Fighting Nerds move. 'The best thing I could do in my life is train with the Fighting Nerds guys. I don't (tell people) to go to any gym (in particular). But you have to find a gym where you have a good relationship with the coaches and the athletes, and I found that there,' Vieira said. Check out Vieira's post-fight news conference in the video above.

Lions no longer have Teddy Bridgewater as fallback option for backup quarterback
Lions no longer have Teddy Bridgewater as fallback option for backup quarterback originally appeared on The Sporting News The Detroit Lions played their Teddy Bridgewater card late last season with the team looking for a more reliable backup quarterback behind Jared Goff. But it appears that won't be an option in 2025. According to CBS Sports analyst Bryant McFadden, Bridgewater is signing with the Tampa Bay Buccaneers. The 33rd Team's Ari Meirov notes that Bridgewater is visiting the Bucs and will sign if all goes well with a physical. A former first-round pick of the Minnesota Vikings in 2014, Bridgewater has played in games with the Vikings, New Orleans Saints, Carolina Panthers, Denver Broncos, Miami Dolphins and Lions during his career. The 2015 Pro Bowler spent the last two seasons with the Lions, appearing in just one game. He was signed by Detroit last December and immediately became the team's backup behind Goff, which showed a lack of faith in Hendon Hooker. As for the Lions, they're currently navigating a competition between Hooker and Kyle Allen, both of whom struggled mightily in the Hall of Fame Game loss to the Los Angeles Chargers. While it's too early to panic, those that did felt safe knowing Bridgewater could be another option if the Lions didn't feel comfortable with Allen and Hooker. Clearly that's no longer the case. Bridgewater didn't sign until late in 2024 because he was serving as the head coach at his old high school, Miami Northwestern, where he won a state title in his first year at the helm. Bridgewater became available earlier this year after being suspended due to providing impermissible benefits to his players that included paying for Uber rides, meals and recovery services for his players.
