Sleep on Austin Bashi\u00a0at your own risk after UFC on ESPN 71

LAS VEGAS – Austin Bashi met the media Saturday after his first-round submission win over John Yannis at UFC on ESPN 71. Yannis (9-4 MMA, 0-1 UFC) stepped in on short notice to take on the highly touted Bashi (14-1 MMA, 1-1 UFC) and was a big underdog at the UFC Apex. Bashi showed why when he got his first UFC win with a standing rear-naked choke with about 90 seconds left in the opening round. Bashi was supposed to fight Francis Marshall for his sophomore UFC outing until Marshall pulled out not long before the event. The 23-year-old Michigan-based featherweight said all he cared about was making sure he stayed on the card – and didn't care who the opponent was going to be. Bashi was a heavy favorite when he came through and earned a contract on DWCS this past September. He then was expected to make a splash in his official UFC debut when he took on Christian Rodriguez in January. But as a 3-1 favorite, Bashi dropped a decision for the first loss of his MMA career. He said that experience helped set him up for Saturday's win – and what he wants to happen going forward. 'After that last fight, I saw who my true supporters were, and I saw who was sleeping on me – and there were a bunch of people sleeping on me,' Bashi said at his post-fight news conference. 'This was to prove something to myself – not really to the world, but to prove something to myself how hungry I am and how bad I really want it.' Check out Bashi's post-fight news conference in the video above.

Highlights! Bashi Injects Life Into Vegas Card With Slick Submission

Promising prospect Austin Bashi delivered a dominant performance earlier tonight (Sat., Aug. 2, 2025) at UFC Vegas 108 LIVE on ESPN+ from inside UFC Apex in Las Vegas, Nevada, stopping short-notice replacement John Yannis with a first-round submission (rear-naked choke). Bashi, who turns 24 next month, was coming off a lackluster Octagon debut last January when he dropped a decision loss to prospect killer, Christian Rodriguez. This was an important spot for the young featherweight if we wanted to maintain the hype he carried coming over from the Contender Series. Bashi was originally scheduled to face Francis Marshall, but an injury to Marshall allowed Yannis to fill in on a few days notice. Heading into Saturday night, Bashi was a massive betting favorite and it showed right away. The talented prospect wasted no time exploding for a takedown and quickly turned the fight into a grappling match. Yannis was actually able to defend on the mat, but on his way up Bashi sneakily locked up the choke and forced Yannis to tap. It was pretty impressive. Exit ‘Fire,' Enter ‘Angel'

UFC Vegas 108 continues to undergo last-second changes. A planned Featherweight clash between blue chip prospect Austin Bashi and Contenders Series veteran Francis Marshall has been scratched after 'Fire' Marshall withdrew. Filling in for Marshall will be John Yannis (9-2), Featherweight champion of the Fury FC promotion. Yannis has won three straight fights all via knockout ahead of his UFC debut. Odds are against the Texan, however, as Bashi is widely regarded as a top-notch prospect at 23 years of age. A slick wrestler and grappler, Bashi will be looking to rebound from the first loss of his professional career opposite noted prospect hunter Christian Rodriguez. It's a tall task on short-notice, but hopefully we'll learn something about 'Angel' in the process. Scheduled for this weekend (Sat., Aug. 2, 2025), UFC Vegas 108 already lost its main event on Monday morning when Amir Albazi was forced to withdraw from his scheduled clash opposite Tatsuro Taira. Fortunately, a replacement was found Just a few hours later in undefeated Hyun Sung Park, a promising striker who was pulled from a later match up opposite Steve Erceg. Just a few hours after the revised main event was announced, vicious Middleweight knockout artist Azamat Bekoev was bumped off the card entirely. Despite all the last-second changes, the event is still scheduled to have 12 bouts, though fight fans may notice a distinct lack in star power. Such is life in the UFC Apex. Austin Bashi bounced back in a big way at UFC on ESPN 71 after stumbling in his octagon debut. The highly touted featherweight prospect was overwhelming against John Yannis (9-4 MMA, 0-1 UFC), who was overwhelmed by the grappling pressure from the outside and found himself trapped in a standing rear-naked choke from Bashi (14-1 MMA, 1-1 UFC) for the submission at the 3:39 mark of Round 1 on Saturday at UFC Apex in Las Vegas. Check out the replay of Bashi's handiwork below (via X): After the fight, Bashi reflected on what it took to get back in the win column after the 23-year-old suffered his first career defeat against Christian Rodriguez in January. "I've been working for this moment my entire life," Bashi told Michael Bisping post-fight after his win. "In January, it didn't go my way but I got back with my coaches and got the victory."
