Delhi L-G V K Saxena, CM Rekha Gupta launch bamboo plantation drive at Okhla Landfill

Delhi Lieutenant Governor Vinai Kumar Saxena, along with Chief Minister Rekha Gupta, on Friday launched a bamboo plantation drive at Okhla Landfill Site that was reclaimed after biomining of legacy waste. Highlighting the importance of the bamboo plantation drive, Saxena said that in the last three years, 1,70,000 bamboo saplings have been planted in Delhi. The drive of turning landfill sites into green zones began in March, when L-G Saxena and Gupta, along with others, had planted bamboo saplings at the Bhalswa Landfill site. 'Today's bamboo plantation drive might seem like a small event but its importance is quite big.' Saxena said Bamboo became the choice of plantation drive because it releases 30 per cent more oxygen than other plants, requires low maintenance and it grows fast in less water but the most important factor considered was that no permission is required for its cutting if the land is to be used for other purposes in the future. 'These plants will grow up to 20 feet in 8-9 months….Bamboo saplings planted at Bansera Park have attained a height of 40-42 feet in one and a half years,' Saxena said. Around 8,000 bamboo saplings of two species — Bambusa tulda and Bambusa polymorpha — will be planted at Okhla Landfill. In between bamboo saplings, 8,000 lemongrass and vetiver saplings will also be planted. 'Their roots will help prevent soil erosion during heavy rains. Additionally, they block heavy metals from seeping into the groundwater and enhance oxygen levels in the air, improving the local environment,' the Municipal Corporation of Delhi (MCD) said in its statement. L-G stated that the agency conducting biomining work at the Okhla Landfill Site has indicated that the work will be completed by December at this site. However, it has been learned that the L-G has asked the agency to complete the work two months ahead of the deadline. He said that during the previous government, 11 trommel machines were deployed at all three landfill sites, processing 6,000 tonnes of waste every day, but now the waste processing capacity has been increased to 25,000 tonnes per day. The landfill site is now spread over an area of 62 acres. Earlier, it had a height of 60 meters, which has been reduced to 40 meters. 'The garbage mountain of 60 metric tonnes is reduced to 28 metric tonnes, which in itself is a praiseworthy deed. The previous government made a false promise to the citizens to remove these garbage mountains but in the end citizens removed that government…Now there is a functional government in Delhi, and the credit for which goes to the citizens of Delhi,' Gupta said. Only 7,000 tonnes of waste is processed daily in Delhi as against the 11,000 tonnes of garbage generated. CM Gupta said that in order to deal with the 4,000 tonnes gap, the government is going to set up two new waste-to-energy plants and the capacity of the existing waste to energy plants is also going to be increased. 'The present capacity to process 7,000 tonnes of garbage per day will be increased to 15,000 tonnes per day so that no amount of garbage remains unprocessed,' Gupta said. She also announced the government's plans to introduce biogas plants in Delhi's 11 dairy colonies.

L-G VK Saxena permits felling 27 trees to make way for flyover

NEW DELHI: L-G VK Saxena on Wednesday permitted cutting or transplanting 27 trees in a 2.16-hectare area coming in way of a flyover project in Nand Nagri in the city's northeast. The construction of a 1.5-km flyover between Mandoli prison and the Gagan Cinema intersection has been underway since 2023. 'In a major decision that would help clear the last hurdle in the way of infrastructure development in Northeast Delhi, L-G VK Saxena has granted approval for the exemption of a 2.16-hectare area for transplantation/cutting of 27 trees for a flyover project at the Nand Nagri-Gagan cinema junction,' a PWD statement said. The flyover was supposed to be completed last year, but the project hit a roadblock because of trees in the way, PWD said. The agency said the tree cutting permission was granted under Section 29 of the Delhi Preservation of Trees Act, 1994, and after consultation with the Department of Forest. According to forest officials, PWD had submitted a formal request to it seeking permission to transplant trees for the construction of the project. The PWD said the proposal has already been cleared by the environment department, the chief secretary, the environment minister, and Chief Minister Rekha Gupta. 'This flyover project will address the long-pending issue of traffic jams and commuting in the area,' it added.

Honoured to be part of 'Metro... In Dino': Sara Ali Khan

Mumbai, Actor Sara Ali Khan on Wednesday said she grew up watching filmmaker Anurag Basu 's movies and that is why it was surreal for her to be a part of the director's latest, "Metro... In Dino". An anthology of four stories of contemporary couples, the movie is a follow-up to Basu's critically-acclaimed 2007 movie "Life in a... Metro". As an actor, Sara said she has never felt "less pressure" for a project but with "Metro... In Dino", she knew that the responsibility would be shouldered by everyone involved in the film. "I have never felt less pressure. I just think that there are moments where I can't even believe that I'm here. I am just so honoured and privileged to be on a stage right now with like seven actors that I admire, with Anurag and Bhushan sir, in a film like this. "It's just amazing. It's surreal to me to just be a part of it. So, I don't think that the pressure would be mine at all actually," the actor told reporters. In the movie, Sara will feature alongside Aditya Roy Kapur , Ali Fazal, Fatima Sana Shaikh, Konkona Sen Sharma, Pankaj Tripathi, Neena Gupta and Anupam Kher. The four stories of the movie are set in four main metro cities -- Mumbai, Delhi, Kolkata and Bengaluru. The "Sky Force" actor said she was new to Basu's style of filmmaking and that's why she relied on co-star Aditya, who had earlier starred in the director's 2020 anthology "Ludo". "I had a lot of fun. I've grown up watching Basu da's films and I think that just being given an opportunity to be part of it was just amazing. Basu da has a way of working that I have never really seen before. Adi, having worked with Basu da before, it was like a nice bridge kind of a thing because they knew each other and they knew how to kind of work. I instantly felt very comfortable," she said. Besides Aditya, Fatima, who also featured in "Ludo", helped Sara on the sets. "They both were like, 'This is it, this is how it's going to be. Just go with the flow.' So, I think that it was definitely helpful," she said. Asked about the box office pressure, Basu said a storyteller should honestly tell their stories and let audiences decide the fate of the movie. "You can't plan it. A safe film is the most unsafe film. I think a film needs to be made with heart and then the audience will decide whether we did our job," he said. "Metro... In Dino" is produced by Bhushan Kumar of T-Series and Anurag Basu Productions Pvt Ltd. The film will be released in theatres on July 4.
