United Airlines Flight Turns Around After a Threatening Message Was Written on the Lavatory Mirror
United Airlines Flight 1169 took off from Daniel K. Inouye International Airport just after 9:40 p.m. local time on Tuesday, May 20
The flight was on its way to Los Angeles International Airport when it turned back to Honolulu about an hour and a half after takeoff
United Airlines said in a statement shared with PEOPLE that the aircraft "returned safely to Honolulu after a potential security concern was found written on a lavatory mirror"
A United Airlines flight to Los Angeles from Honolulu had to turn around after a "potential security concern" was found in the plane's bathroom.
According to Fox News, United Airlines Flight 1169 took off from Daniel K. Inouye International Airport just after 9:40 p.m. local time on Tuesday, May 20. It was set to travel to Los Angeles International Airport.
Flight tracking data from FlightAware, however, shows that the plane turned back to return to the Honolulu airport about an hour and a half after takeoff.
The Federal Aviation Administration confirmed to PEOPLE on Thursday, May 22, that the aircraft, which had 339 passengers and 10 crew members onboard, returned to Daniel K. Inouye International Airport around 1:35 a.m. local time on Wednesday, May 21, due to a "security issue."
Also on Thursday, United Airlines said in a statement shared with PEOPLE that the aircraft "returned safely to Honolulu after a potential security concern was found written on a lavatory mirror."
"Law enforcement met the aircraft, and a security sweep was conducted. We rebooked customers on another flight to Los Angeles that departed later that evening," the statement said.
Flight passenger Kouhei Massey told Hawaii News Now that everyone on the flight had to wait approximately four hours on the tarmac while bomb experts and dogs screened each person individually as they disembarked the aircraft.
"Later I found out through the airport security manager that someone had written on the bathroom mirror that there was a bomb on the plane,' said Massey.
Fellow passenger Christi Wright said she didn't find out about the security issue until after everyone evacuated.
'It's a good thing we didn't know that on the plane. That would have been really bad,' said Wright.
According to Fox News, Honolulu police referred questions about the investigation to the FBI in Honolulu.

Teen Goes Viral Helping Burger King Coworkers After Graduating. Then Strangers Raised $200K to Send Him to College
Mykale Baker voluntarily, and spontaneously, helped his Burger King coworkers right after attending his high school graduation ceremony last month Customer Maria Mendoza, who noticed Baker was still wearing his graduation medals, captured the moment, which ended up going viral on TikTok. Then, she set up a college tuition fundraiser that has raised over $200,000 so far When the teen found out about everything he was shocked — but tells PEOPLE he also feels beyond blessedAn 18-year-old high school graduate in Georgia can now afford to go to college after his act of generosity on graduation night led to a viral TikTok. 'I just feel amazing,' Mykale Baker, who lives in Gwinnett County, tells PEOPLE. 'Blessed, honestly.' Mykale was one of about 700 students who graduated from Mills Creek High School last month. There, he received his diploma and two medals, one for band and the other for track. Afterwards, Mykale went to his local Burger King, where he works as a crew member, to pick up food for his family. Although he wasn't scheduled to work that night, he ended up helping out his busy coworkers behind the counter. 'Honestly, I walked in there and I just saw it was so busy,' he recalls. 'I was like, 'I'm not doing anything when I get home, so I might as well just help you out, give out a helping hand.' " The teen took off his cap and gown, but still wore his graduation medals around his neck, which caught the eye of a customer whose daughter went to the same school and also graduated that day. Maria Mendoza, 45, and her family — including the graduate, daughter Daizie — stopped in at the Burger King that night because Mendoza had a hankering for a Whopper. When she caught sight of Mykale through the drive-through window, she froze. "I told my husband, 'Look at him. He is working. Oh my God. He has his medals,' " she says. Moved by seeing Mykale fresh out of his graduation to prepare the customers' orders, Mendoza took out her cellphone and recorded him for several seconds before stopping when he turned around. 'I dropped the phone," says Mendoza, "and my daughter, who was in the backseat, was like, 'Mom, what are you doing? You're so weird.' " The next evening, Mendoza shared the clip of Mykale on TikTok and then went to sleep. 'When I woke up, I was just blown away,' she says. As of Friday, June 6, the TikTok has generated over 4.4 million views. It was her daughter Jazmine who suggested setting up an online fundraiser on Mykale's behalf. 'So I decided to put a GoFundMe to pay for his college tuition,' she says. (As of Friday, June 6, that GoFundMe has raised over $200,000.) Mendoza later stopped at the Burger King and asked for Mykale's contact information from his coworkers so she could tell him the news. They declined to give it to her, so she left them her phone number to pass it on to him. Twenty hours passed and Mendoza had not heard from Mykale. With the donations to the GoFundMe continuing to pour in, Mendoza went back to the Burger King to speak with Mykale's manager. The manager then called Mykale and told him to come to the restaurant. ''I need you to come right now. This is life changing. Please, I beg you. Come right now,' ' the manager said, according to Mendoza. Fifteen minutes later, Mykale and his mother entered the Burger King and Mendoza told them what happened. Upon hearing the news, an emotional Mykale hugged his mother and Mendoza. 'Honestly, when she told me about the video, I was surprised,' Mykale says. 'But when she showed me the GoFundMe, I was like, 'Wow. I might go to college now.' ' Never miss a story — sign up for to stay up-to-date on the best of what PEOPLE has to offer, from celebrity news to compelling human interest stories. Mykale says that he was originally planning to take a gap year or join the Army so he could pay for college. Now with the money raised for him, he has set his sights on Gwinnett Technical College. And that's not the end of his good fortune: after hearing about Mykale's story, Burger King and the Burger King Foundation awarded Mykale with a $10,000 scholarship. They also offered Mendoza's daughter Daizie with $10,000 scholarship as well. 'This story is about more than a viral moment. It's a testament to hard work, generosity, and the incredible ripple effect of doing the right thing," Burger King tells PEOPLE in a statement. Mendoza feels proud to be able to help Mykale achieve his dream. 'It brings me so much joy,' she adds. 'I'm smiling and laughing because I'm overjoyed of what's going on with Mykale. Now he's part of my life, and I'm part of his life, and his mom said we're family. I've gained a new family. I just feel so blessed." Meanwhile, Mykale is still working at the Burger King, but now he's a manager — and his life has changed because of the viral moment. 'I'm very grateful that she actually did this,' he says of Mendoza. 'It opened eyes up for me to see that now that she did this for me, that I return this favor and pay it forward to somebody else.' Charles' Funeral May Be the Only Time Harry & William Will Ever See Each Other Again Amid Claims There's ‘No Turning Back' in Their Feud
There's 'no turning back' for Prince Harry's relationship with Prince William and King Charles. Royals expert Hilary Fordwich told Fox News in June 2025 that, while Charles is still 'tender' toward reconciling with his son, William has 'shut the door' on Harry, and wants their father to follow suit. 'There is no turning back,' Fordwich said. 'King Charles remains tender towards his son but can't risk communication. Prince William now has absolutely no interest in mending fences. Those close to the king say he [shouldn't] make peace with Harry in a way that would burden Prince William's future reign. The animosity is so deep that William has shut the door on Harry. Charles is not willing to go against his heir's wishes.' More from StyleCaster Prince Harry Is 'Damaging' King Charles' Legacy Amid Reports the Monarch Is a 'Sick Man' Prince William Just Took Over a Role Meant for Harry Amid Reports He Wants Him 'Harshly' Dealt With For the 'Ultimate Windsor Crime' Fordwich explained that the real reason William and Charles don't plan on ever reconciling with Harry is due to their lack of trust in the former Duke of Sussex and his wife, Meghan Markle. 'Everything comes down to trust and the lack of it,' Fordwich said. Royal biographer Sally Bedell Smith also echoed the same sentiment to People after Harry's BBC interview in which Harry claimed that his father could die before they ever speak again. 'The underlying issue is trust,' Bedell said. 'The king and William don't trust Harry and Meghan with any kind of confidential conversation.' As for Harry's relationship with William, another source told Fox News that they don't expect the brothers to see each other again unless Charles dies. 'The funeral of Charles would be the first time that courtiers would imagine [them reuniting],' the source said. 'I can't imagine William would invite Harry to his coronation.' Harry hinted that only his father's funeral could bring him and William back together in his BBC interview, in which he told the outlet the 'only time I come back to the U.K. is, sadly, for funerals or court cases.' Royal author Valentine Low also confirmed to People that Charles' inner circle at Buckingham Palace are also advising him not to speak to Harry. 'There is not a good angel in [the king's] ear to say, 'Be a good dad and make the first move,'' Low said. While William has 'no interest' in reconciling with Harry for his own reasons, sources also told the magazine that Charles' issues with Harry stem from his comments about Charles' wife, Queen Camilla, in his book, Spare, in which he called his stepmother a 'villain.' 'It's Harry's criticisms of Queen Camilla [in his memoir, Spare], as well as his broader attacks on the family and institution, which have seriously crossed a line for the king and those closest to him,' Fordwich told Fox News. Fordwich continued, 'The king is now so puzzled by Harry's constant revelations. It's now beyond sensitive to discuss, so he avoids all interaction regarding the subject. He is so kind but overwhelmed and has quite enough on his plate to deal with, without all this from his son.' Another reason for Charles' rift with Harry has to deal with their court case over Harry's security detail, which he lost after he and Meghan stepped down as senior members of the British royal family and moved to the United States. 'Harry's ill-timed recent interview on the BBC highlighted the lack of trust between them publicly,' royal expert Richard Fitzwilliams told Fox News. 'He seemed to believe his father could and should solve the issue of security, which he insists he and his family should have.' Fitzwilliams continued, 'The rift, sadly, seems likely to remain toxic as there is no mutual trust between them. Hopefully, it will not worsen as the Sussexes could give further interviews or possibly write more about the feud, something that is invariably remunerative for them.' While Low explained that Harry's comment about not knowing 'how much longer' his father has to live wasn't 'meant to be an attack,' it still created a deeper wedge in his relationship with Charles. 'It wasn't meant to be an attack, but it would be seen as one,' Low said. 'It makes Charles reaching out even harder.'
