Punjab: Twist in tale: Now, Giani Harpreet set to head SAD breakaway faction
Dakha MLA Manpreet Singh Ayali as well as former minister Surjit Singh Rakhra on Sunday said a consensus has been reached. The meeting of around 500 delegates, elected from across the country under the supervision of the committee which was formed by the Akal Takht on December 2 last year to reorganise the SAD, will be held at Gurdwara Burj Akali Phoola Singh.
Sources privy to the matter said majority of the delegates want Giani Harpreet Singh to become the president so his name has been almost finalised. Earlier, he had stated in a social media post that he could not contest the election against slain AISSF leader Amrik Singh's daughter Satwant Kaur, who is another contender for the top post, citing that she is a respected figure for him. There were reports that the five members of the Akal Takht-appointed committee — Manpreet Singh Ayali, Gurpartap Singh Wadala, Iqbal Singh Jhoonda, Santa Singh Umaidpuri and Satwant Kaur — were divided as a section wanted Giani Harpreet Singh to be elected to the top post while the other wanted Satwant Kaur to be the president.
According to reports, former SGPC president Gobind Singh Longowal, associated with the rebel camp, approached Giani Harpreet Singh to persuade him to become the president. Kaur may be assigned the responsibility of heading the religious council of the party, which is to be constituted for coordinating with panthic groups for the SGPC elections, said sources.
MLA Ayali said, 'The five-member committee has reached a consensus on Giani Harpreet Singh and we have decided to make Bibi Satwant Kaur a head of the panthic council as a convener which will also be constituted simultaneously during the election.' He added that Giani Harpreet's name would be proposed in Monday's meeting and would be thrown open for voting, if delegates wish to hold an election. 'If anyone else wants to contest, we are open,' he said.
Senior leader of the rebel camp and former minister Surjit Singh Rakhra publicly announced while speaking with a TV channel that Giani Harpreet Singh would be elected president of the party and Satwant Kaur would be appointed as head of the religious council.
Hours later, active members of the Akal Takht-appointed panel issued a press release, terming Rakhra's statement as personal views and stated the election would be conducted. The committee members said the final decision would be taken by the elected delegates in the general assembly. Rakhra was among the senior leaders of the breakaway faction who conducted a meeting in Chandigarh on Sunday evening.
According to Gurpartap Singh Wadala, as per feedback and sentiment in the panthic circles, Giani Harpreet has emerged as a choice for the top post.
Satwant Kaur's father Amrik Singh was an associate of Jarnail Singh Bhindranwale and was killed during Operation Bluestar. Amrik's father Kartar Singh Bhindranwale remained head of Damdami Taksal. She was among the seven-member panel for SAD's reorganisation named in December last year by the Akal Takht, which included SGPC president Harjinder Singh Dhami, former president Kirpal Singh Badungar, Ayali, Jhundan, Wadala and Umaidpuri. Dhami and Badungar had distanced themselves from the panel after which the remaining five members had started their membership drive in March.
Giani Harpreet Singh, who was jathedar of Takht Damdama Sahib, Talwandi Sabo, was one of the key curators of the December 2 edict under which SAD president Sukhbir Singh Badal was declared tankhaiya for the 'mistakes' committed during the SAD regime in Punjab between 2007 and 2017. Giani Harpreet was later removed by the SGPC but continued to support the membership drive and was also critical of the SAD leaders, including party president Sukhbir Singh Badal.
Giani Harpreet Singh also faced criticism from the Sukhbir-led SAD, which alleged that he had a tacit understanding with the BJP.

'Separate group misusing SAD's name, will file criminal complaint,' says Akali Dal
A day after Shiromani Akali Dal (SAD) faced a virtual split following the rebel faction announcing its new president, the party on Tuesday (August 12, 2025) said it would file a criminal complaint against those leaders who were trying to appropriate the name of the SAD that was a registered and recognised party as per the Election Commission notification of 1996. Accusing the rebel faction of deceiving Punjabis by making false claims, senior party leader Daljit Singh Cheema said, 'At present 100% of the delegates of the Shiromani Akali Dal are with the party and not even one member of the separate group, which was misusing the name of the SAD, was a member of the latter party.' Mr. Cheema said all delegates of the SAD had been elected after a due election following the end of the term of the previous working committee. 'All members of the SAD had taken membership of the party after submitting a membership fee of ₹10, which was applicable for five years. The separate group did not conduct any membership drive as per the constitution of the party, which stipulates that every member has to pay a fee of ₹10. Therefore, they have no right to call their party meeting a delegate session of the SAD and can be proceeded against for indulging in cheating and forgery,' he said here at a press conference. He also termed the move as illegal, unconstitutional and immoral and said the SAD was consulting legal experts in order to file a formal criminal complaint in this regard. The party breakaway faction on August 11 had declared former Akal Takht acting chief priest Giani Harpreet Singh as its president.

We are real SAD, will soon get EC stamp, says Giani Harpreet Singh
A day after getting unanimously elected as president of the breakaway Shiromani Akali Dal faction, Giani Harpreet Singh, 52, on Tuesday sharpened his attack on Akali Dal chief Sukhbir Singh Badal and dubbed the recruitment and presidential polls conducted by the group as 'bogus'. In an interview with Hindustan Times, the former Akal Takht acting jathedar said his faction will soon approach the Election Commission of India (ECI) with a claim over party nomenclature, election symbol and office. Edited excerpts: Giani Harpreet Singh How is your group different from SAD led by Sukhbir Singh Badal? What is the need for a separate outfit? They (Sukhbir camp) did not follow the party principles. We will do so. We are real Akali Dal. They buried the traditions for which the Akali Dal was formed over 100 years ago. We will revive that tradition and implement the principles. They discarded the panth and issues of Sikhs and Punjab. They did not address issues of Punjab and the panth and paid no heed to getting them resolved during the 15 years of power from 1997 onwards. Despite being a partner in the ruling BJP-led NDA at the Centre, they made no efforts to get the issues resolved. They don't care about the interests of Sikhs and Punjab. The Sukhbir group has alleged that this entire exercise was pre-planned, and you always harboured the ambition to lead SAD. Your response? It would have been pre-planned if I knew that I would be sacked as jathedar of Takht Damdama Sahib. I am a student of religious studies, and preaching religious ethos is my duty. Had I not been removed, I would have remained on that post, and panth would not have chosen me for the political post. It would have been pre-planned if I, as a jathedar, had resigned to become the president. Their allegations could have still made sense if I had resigned from the post after the December 2 decree. The decision to remove me was theirs. How can they say that it was pre-planned? How do you respond to their allegations that a person, who was part of the decree that called for Akali unity, is now leading a breakaway group? The dissident group 'Akali Dal Sudhar Lehar' was dissolved on the same day that the decree was pronounced. However, it was the Badal camp that never wanted reconciliation and did not accept the dissident leaders. Sukhbir camp also did not accept a 7-member committee constituted by the Akal Takht to reorganise the party. Instead, dissident leaders cooperated with the 7-member committee by dissolving their group. Sukhbir camp leaders should have cooperated with the committee, but instead conducted their recruitment drive and elected their president. It violated the decree, which had stated that present leadership had no moral right to give political patronage to the panth. What is the ground to claim SAD's election symbol and head office? The biggest ground of our claim is that the Badal camp conducted a bogus recruitment and made a bogus president. On the other hand, our recruitment drive is genuine and mentions Aadhaar card numbers and contact numbers. Anyone from the Election Commission of India (ECI) can check and investigate the documents. We will approach the ECI over this. If need arises, we will also move to the court. Is the merger of both factions possible in future? Yes, if the leaders of the Sukhbir faction express commitment to protect the principles and traditions which they have discarded. If they give up their ego and get ready to dissolve their faction, the merger is possible. There are allegations that you have the BJP/Centre's backing. Are you going to ally with them in future? Such decisions can only be taken when a working committee of the party is formed. My personal opinion is that the party principles and issues of Punjab and the panth should be of priority. No alliance will take shape with any party just to get ministerial berths. The party is new, and an alliance is not possible at this stage. We will sit and discuss what should be done or not. Linking dissident leaders to rival parties is an old business of the Sukhbir camp. They did not even spare former SGPC president Gurcharan Singh Tohra when he parted ways with Parkash Singh Badal in 1999, and dubbed him as 'agent of Congress'. How will you compete with the Sukhbir-led SAD, which has a lot of resources, office and controls SGPC? We are not bothered and don't care about these things. Our party is run by ordinary people. When ordinary people start backing and running political parties, then money or resources do not matter. The example of the Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) is there. Ordinary people became MLAs without any money or muscle power. Commitment, confidence and dedication is needed to run the parties. If Sukhbir has a lot of resources and money, how come the party is facing an existential crisis and was reduced to just three seats in the last assembly elections?

Policy U-Turn puts AAP's political skills to test ahead of '27 elections
Chandigarh: The AAP govt's move to withdraw its controversial Land Pooling Policy 2025 will be a test of the party's political dexterity ahead of the Punjab assembly elections in 2027. While the opposition is drawing parallels between the farmers' protest against the policy the protests stage to oppose the three farm laws in 2020-2021, AAP is calling the withdrawal of the policy "pragmatic" and a "timely retreat" in response to public sentiment. This to and fro is likely to shape the political discourse around AAP ahead of the 2027 contest. In the first example of such a narrative, finance minister Harpal Singh Cheema said during a media interaction on Tuesday that there was no comparison between the three central laws and the policy, or the protests against them. "There is no parallel," Cheema said, adding that over 700 farmers died in the 2020-21 stir and it caused the SAD to end its political alliance with BJP. Cheema expressed confidence that the withdrawn policy won't harm AAP's electoral prospects and the party would improve on its 2022 performance in the next elections. Asked about state govt's initial claim that the policy was "farmer friendly", Cheema said the policy was introduced in the interest of farmers and other beneficiaries, but it was withdrawn based on their feedback. He claimed that stakeholders were properly consulted throughout the process. When asked what prompted the govt to scrap the policy, Cheema said CM Mann personally engaged with farmers. "The chief minister realised that they were not satisfied with the policy during his interactions at events," Cheema added. He mentioned this wasn't the first land pooling policy in the state's history, pointing out that the Akalis implemented a similar policy in a staggered way, while the Congress allowed private players to acquire land. Daljit Singh, a lawyer and member of the All India Congress Committe, said quite contrary to AAP govt's claims that it withdrew the land pooling policy to respect the farmers' opinion, the AAP leadership sensed its eroding political space. "The AAP govt was forced to reconsider its decision after the High Court order on Saturday made strong observations against the policy. It would be impossible for the ruling party to shed the tag of being anti-farmer and it will have a bearing on its performance in the next assembly elections," said Daljit Singh, who actively opposed the policy. Amar Singh, the Congress MP from Fatehgarh Sahib, stated that the AAP govt's land pooling policy was introduced without any demand from the ground level. "It was a plan to loot landowners, and the Congress didn't allow that to happen," he said. An AAP leader, meanwhile, confided on condition of anonymity that the land pooling policy "not only built a negative perception in the minds of landowners, but it also strengthened the opposition's charge that the party's Delhi leadership has a role in such key decisions." He added, "For farmers, land has always been an emotive issue and somehow they perceived the land pooling policy with suspicion." It is learnt that in the face of fierce opposition to the policy from landowners and rival parties, some AAP members internally voiced their concerns with the party, and the move could prove to be politically damaging for the party. BOX: WASN'T THE FIRST LAND POOLING POLICY: CHEEMA Punjab Finance Minister Harpal Singh Cheema claimed that previous Congress and SAD-BJP govts granted "change of land use" (CLU) for more than 30,000 acres of land for residential and industrial development. "Illegal colonies mushroomed in the state during the previous govts and people have to live without proper amenities. Land for these colonies was taken at low rates from farmers and handed over to developers. Land pooling policy was earlier introduced in Mohali by the Akali govt," he said. Cheema added that the land pooling policy was aimed at planned urban development but was withdrawn if farmers were not satisfied with the policy. "The AAP govt has defended the interests of farmers and has ensured that canal water reached every field. The Bhakra Beas Management Board (BBMB) was stopped from releasing additional water to Haryana. Uninterrupted power supply has been ensured for the agriculture sector," he said. BOX: AAP MLA DISTRIBUTES SWEETS AAP MLA from Fatehgarh Sahib Lakhbir Singh Rai distributed sweets to celebrate the withdrawal of the land pooling policy. "We are thankful to the CM Mann and the Punjab government, who, after listening to the voice of the farmers and the people of Punjab, have withdrawn the land pooling policy. The state's development will proceed according to the wishes of its people. The state govt has scrapped it based on the feedback," he said.
