Rangers icon Ally McCoist admits ‘it's made my day' as he spots special guest close to his heart at Goodison Park

EVERTON bid a special goodbye to their Goodison Park home with a 2-0 victory over Southampton today.
And TNT Sports co-commentator Ally McCoist had a special moment of his own as he spotted a familiar face in the crowd.

McCoist was in the commentary booth for the game, which saw Everton's men's team play their final match at Goodison after 133 years.
And he and commentator Darren Fletcher were joined in their coverage by former Toffees heroes Phil Jagielka and Duncan Ferguson behind the dugouts.
Ferguson, an ex-teammate of McCoist's at Rangers, spotted a special guest in attendance at the game and shared the moment with the Ibrox legend.
Ferguson said to McCoist: "Was it not wonderful to see Walter Smith's widow up there, looking so well?"
McCoist responded to Ferguson: "Aw Fergie, it made my day!
"It's a privilege to be here, but that particular moment made my day."
McCoist played under Smith and later joined his coaching staff at Ibrox, and enjoyed a close relationship with the much-loved former boss' family.
He has opened up in the past on the moment he found out about Smith's passing in 2021, and revealed that his thoughts immediately went to Smith's wife Ethel and sons Neil and Steven.
Writing in his book 'Dear Scotland: On The Road With The Tartan Army', McCoist reflected: "I was working at talkSPORT, doing the breakfast show, when I saw I had a missed call from Steven, Walter's son, and I knew what was coming.
"I'd been to the hospital and at the house to see him, and so knowing how unwell he was, I took myself away to make the call back.

'Silence. It is hard to know what to say, but knowing just how much Walter adored his wife Ethel, his kids and his grandkids, and the severe grief they were now going through, my thoughts were immediately with them.
"Neil and Steven are two chips off the old block, the best company like their father, and I am so pleased to call the whole family friends."

Rangers chief Kevin Thelwell says head coach appointment due in ‘coming days'
Thelwell has officially started his role but had already been working on finding a new man to lead the first team after Barry Ferguson's spell in interim charge ended at the close of the season. Rangers confirmed that Thelwell had brought Dan Purdy with him from Everton to replace Nils Koppen as technical director. Koppen, who arrived from PSV Eindhoven in December 2023, initially as director of football recruitment, will work with Thelwell and Purdy to 'support a smooth handover'. Purdy spent 11 years at Everton working in scouting and analysis and most recently head of recruitment. Rangers stated Purdy would lead on recruitment and scouting across the men's, women's and academy programmes. Thelwell arrives after three years at Everton. He previously worked for the Football Association of Wales and was head of the youth academies of Preston, Derby and Wolves, the first two working under former Rangers midfielder Billy Davies. He moved to New York Red Bulls to become head of sport for two years before his switch to Everton. 'This is a new chapter for Rangers, and while we recognise success won't come easy, our goal is clear: we need to win,' he said. 'My focus is on delivering that, with discipline and ambition. We'll give everything to move this club forward as quickly and sustainably as we can.'

But he has been left scratching his head as to why he hasn't had more opportunities. Drumchapel currently ply their trade in the West of Scotland Football League Premier Division - the sixth tier of the SPFL pyramid. While Novo admits he loves working with the part-timers but has found himself questioning why, after such a glittering playing career, that he's been passed over for other coaching jobs. It was reported last year that Novo applied for the Raith Rovers job when Ian Murray was bizarrely sacked just one game into the season. But the Kirkcaldy club appointed Neil Collins as his successor. Novo, 46, retired in 2017 after having played in the top flights of Spain, Scotland and Poland and winning seven trophies (six with Gers and one with Legia Warsaw). He went through his coaching badges before landing his first job as a coach at Lexington SC in USL League One (the third tier of football in the United States). He initially served as assistant manager and as the head coach of the Under-23s before being promoted to the interim role in September 2023. But he left and within a year had returned to Scotland. After a full season with Drumchapel, Novo has admitted he is still chasing a dream of opening a football academy if he doesn't get a full-time job in management. Rangers fans react as 49ers takeover completed Speaking on the Let Me Be Frank podcast, Novo said: "I've been at Drumchapel for a whole season now and I love it. "Especially because it's proper football, that's how I'd say it! Proper tackles! "We had a good group of boys, some have been pros. They did well this season." And despite his reputation as a former Rangers fan favourite, Novo insists he never had any added grief on the sidelines over the past year. But he does wonder if his association to the Light Blues has held him back when it comes to applying for other jobs higher up the food chain. He said: "I don't know why I can't get a job in football as a coach or anything like that. "Is it because of Rangers? I don't know. "It's probably because of how I was on the park but how I was on the park is not how I am as a person outside." Expanding on that point, Novo talked about how former Celtic foes like John Hartson remain good family friends to this day. And how one-time arch rival Neil Lennon is one of the nicest people he's met in football. Novo said: "People think about Neil Lennon for example, they think he's terrible, that he acts like he did on the pitch. He's one of the nicest guys you'll ever meet. "John Hartson, he's a good friend of my family. "We played on the same park and hated each other but we respected each other. "On the pitch we were enemies and that was my mentality but outside of that I'm very quiet and a family man." Novo has been approached for a scouting job that would see him scour Scotland and the north of England for talent. But his main ambition is to open a cross-border football academy that would link his homeland and his adopted home. He said: "I tried to open a football academy here and in Spain. "I wanted to bring clubs from Scotland over to Spain for a tournament and bring Spanish teams here for the same thing. "But that takes a lot of insurance to do it right, a lot of admin and red tape. Facing Rangers at Ibrox was the craziest experience of my career and I've won the World Cup AND the Champions League
One former star was blown away by Ibrox during a Champions League clash way back in 2007 It's not uncommon for top players from around the continent to rave about the atmosphere generated at Ibrox or Celtic Park. But one World Cup winner has described facing Rangers in their own backyard as the 'craziest experience' of his whole career. Former midfield dynamo Sami Khedira had only recently cemented himself as a regular fixture for Stuttgart when the Bundesliga side travelled to Govan in September 2007 for the opening round of fixtures in the Champions League group stage. The future Real Madrid and Juventus superstar played the first 77 minutes as his team fell to a 2-1 defeat, despite goal machine Mario Gomez giving them an early second half lead before Walter Smith's Gers hit back with a double courtesy of strikes from Charlie Adam and Jean-Claude Darcheville. Khedira went onto form a key cog in the Germany team under Joachim Low that lifted the World Cup in Brazil in 2014 but insists the amazing experience he witnessed in that game has stuck with him. In an interview with TikTok star Fiago, the 77-time Germany cap was asked about the best atmosphere he had ever played in and replied: "For me the most craziest experience ever was my first Champions League match. We played Glasgow Rangers and it was such an amazing experience." And that view was unequivocally shared by Stuttgart and Germany teammate and future Bayern Munich striker Gomez, who was also blown away by what Ibrox had to offer: "That's a difficult one. "I would say the Scottish fans like Celtic but to me I played against the Rangers and I will never forget this. They've been really strong." Despite getting off to a winning start in the Champions League that season, Gers bowed out of the group stage after three consecutive defeats in their return clashes against Stuttgart, Barcelona and Lyon. However, avoiding a fourth place finish in the group saw the Light Blues remain in Europe after Christmas by dropping into the UEFA Cup. Smith's side pulled off fine triumphs against Panathinaikos, Werder Bremen, Sporting Lisbon and Fiorentina over two legs before losing out to Zenit St Petersburg in the final in Manchester.
