Ultimate Costa Rica Travel Itinerary: Seven Days Between Tamarindo and Santa Teresa
Day 1: Arrival in Liberia and Transfer to Tamarindo
Begin your journey by landing at Daniel Oduber Quirós International Airport in Liberia, the most convenient airport for reaching Tamarindo. After a smooth customs process, hop into a pre-booked shuttle or a 4x4 rental, ideal for navigating Costa Rica's often unpredictable roads.
Tamarindo, just under two hours away, welcomes visitors with a buzzing energy. Check into your accommodation and unwind. For those seeking refinement and privacy, luxury villas in Costa Rica from Elite Beach Villas, opens new tab in Tamarindo offer stunning views, infinity pools, and concierge services. Spend your evening watching the sun dip below the horizon from the beach or a beachfront bistro.
Day 2: Surf, Culture, and Sunset Sailing
Kick off your day with a surf lesson at Playa Tamarindo. This beach, with its long breaks and warm waters, is perfect for beginners and intermediate surfers alike. Local instructors provide gear and guidance with a dose of pura vida enthusiasm.
In the afternoon, explore the town's boutique shops and artisan markets, where local crafts and organic products fill the air with character. If you're inclined toward nature, visit the nearby Las Baulas National Marine Park, a nesting ground for the endangered leatherback turtle.
As the day winds down, board a catamaran for a sunset sailing excursion. With a cocktail in hand and dolphins occasionally trailing the boat, the Pacific becomes a golden mirror of the sky.
Day 3: Day Trip to Playa Avellanas or Hacienda Pinilla
Tamarindo's surroundings offer tranquil escapes. Head south to Playa Avellanas, often called "Little Hawaii" by surfers for its world-class waves. It's far less crowded than Tamarindo and the sand feels untouched by time. For lunch, stop at Lola's, a beachfront institution that blends fresh cuisine with barefoot luxury.
Alternatively, spend the day at Hacienda Pinilla, a vast estate offering golf, horseback riding, and beach clubs. This area also houses some of the most exclusive luxury villas Costa Rica has to offer, nestled between dry forest and sea.
Day 4: Travel to Santa Teresa via Ferry
After breakfast, check out and begin the journey to Santa Teresa. The drive to the ferry terminal in Puntarenas takes about 3.5 hours. The ferry across the Gulf of Nicoya, bound for Paquera, is a scenic voyage. You'll pass fishing boats, mangrove islands, and the occasional ray breaching the surface.
From Paquera, the final leg to Santa Teresa takes roughly two hours along winding coastal roads. The remoteness is part of its charm. Upon arrival, check into your accommodation. Santa Teresa offers a diverse mix of boho-chic guesthouses and luxury villas Costa Rica travelers often seek for private, serene stays.
Day 5: Yoga, Nature, and Beach Dining
Santa Teresa is a haven for mindfulness and wellness. Begin your day with a beachfront yoga class, often accompanied by the sound of howler monkeys in the treetops.
Later, explore the Cabo Blanco Nature Reserve, Costa Rica's first protected area. Hike through lush forest trails that spill onto secluded beaches where time seems to pause.
As the sky turns amber, dine at a beachside restaurant. Many spots specialize in farm-to-table cuisine, combining local seafood, tropical ingredients, and global culinary techniques.
Day 6: Surf or Explore Montezuma
For experienced surfers, Playa Santa Teresa and Playa Hermosa offer consistent swells and a thrilling ride. Surfboard rentals and advanced-level coaching are available locally. If surfing isn't your tempo, consider a trip to Montezuma, a small bohemian village just over an hour away.
There, a network of waterfalls awaits. The Montezuma Waterfalls, cascading pools surrounded by jungle are perfect for swimming and photos. On your return, stop by one of the area's organic cafés for a smoothie made with freshly picked guanábana or passion fruit.
Day 7: Leisure and Departure
Spend your last morning savoring a slow breakfast with a view. Whether you're lounging by the pool of one of the luxury villas Costa Rica properties or grabbing a final dip in the Pacific, give yourself time to reflect on the contrasts and connections between Tamarindo and Santa Teresa.
Begin your return journey to Liberia, or opt to fly out from the closer Tambor domestic airport with a connecting flight to San José. Either way, Costa Rica's coastal magic lingers long after you've left its shores.
This seven-day itinerary between Tamarindo and Santa Teresa blends ocean adventure, cultural immersion, and moments of stillness. It offers a taste of the best Costa Rica has to offer — for the active traveler, the nature lover, and those drawn to the harmony of luxury and simplicity.

I want to go on holiday before I start chemotherapy – but no company will insure me
Dear Gill, I have recently undergone bowel surgery and a hysterectomy to remove jelly-like lumps associated with pseudomyxoma peritonei (PMP) cancer, which starts in the appendix. It's likely I'll need chemotherapy this autumn so I am desperate to go on holiday, either a last-minute Caribbean cruise or a beach holiday in the Algarve. However, I am struggling to find travel insurance because PMP is a rare cancer and doesn't screen. I'm happy for the insurer to exclude cancer, but I would like to have cover for an accident and the associated repatriation. Can you help me find cover? – Sophie Jones Dear Sophie, It has become easier to find specialist travel insurers willing to cover someone with a cancer diagnosis, though it does depend on the treatment stage and the severity of the disease. A 'fitness to travel' letter from an oncologist is a pre-requisite for cover. A Caribbean cruise is the most expensive holiday for which to obtain cover if you have health conditions. This is due to the high cost of being flown to Florida for treatment. Cover for a two-week trip for Sophie would cost around £3,000 so I suggested she stick to Europe, taking either a land-based or a cruise holiday. Most insurers now require customers to start by filling out an online health screening which is a tick-box exercise. If the medical score is low enough a quotation is generated; if the score is high you will need to speak to a call centre agent trained to conduct enhanced screening before a decision is made. Sophie decided to spend a week in Portugal before her chemo started and, at my request, contacted several insurers which specialise in this area. Freedom Travel Insurance (01223 446914) offered her a single-trip policy to Portugal for £73.34 after speaking to an agent. The policy would cover her Type 1 diabetes and her current cancer diagnosis with a £2,500 cancellation limit. At Free Spirit (02392 419 080), part of the highly regarded P J Hayman insurance group, Sophie was able to purchase a similar policy online without referral to an agent as her particular cancer, PMP, was on the drop-down list. The policy cost £74.26, with a £3,000 cancellation limit. A spokesman for Free Spirit told me that taking a holiday between diagnosis and the start of chemotherapy or radiotherapy is seen as lower risk by insurers, compared to taking a break during chemo when your immune system is less robust. Other insurers specialising in policies for those with health conditions – and also with no upper age limit – include Just Travel Cover (0800 294 2969) and All Clear (0800 848 8608). Your travel problems solved Gill takes on a different case each week – so please send your problems to her for consideration at asktheexperts@ Please give your full name and, if your dispute is with a travel company, your address, telephone number and any booking reference. Gill can't answer every question, but she will help where she can and all emails are acknowledged.

Michael O'Leary says Ryanair summer bookings remain strong
Ryanair is seeing strong demand across Europe with bookings ahead of last year, and is "reasonably optimistic" about hitting its summer targets, chief executive Michael O'Leary said in an interview on Thursday. He also praised Boeing for agreeing to deliver some jets earlier than scheduled, ending a run of delays that have curbed Ryanair's growth rate. Advertisement "We're seeing strong bookings through the peak summer months ... The fares are holding up," O'Leary said, adding that bookings were about 1 per cent ahead of the same point last year. He repeated a forecast from July that average fares were likely to recover almost all of a 7 per cent decline seen in the July-September quarter last year, when Ryanair was hit by consumer caution and a dispute with some online travel agents. Hitting the summer target will depend on close-in bookings for the remainder of the airline's key second quarter, which ends on September 30th, he said. There has been no sign of consumers changing their plans due to heatwaves this summer, O'Leary added. But he warned that US tariffs would ultimately act as a drag on global growth. Advertisement "I think everybody is cautious at the moment, and we're right to be cautious," he said. Boeing, which is due to deliver the final 29 aircraft of Ryanair's current order of 737 Max jets this winter, has agreed to deliver seven jets in August and seven in September, ahead of an earlier-agreed schedule. "Boeing are doing a terrific job," O'Leary said. He was speaking in Tirana, where he announced a doubling of capacity to four million passengers per year with the basing of three aircraft at the airport from next April. He described Albania as a hidden jewel of the Adriatic. Advertisement Ryanair, Europe's largest airline by passengers, also announced plans to increase capacity serving Sweden by 25 per cent for this winter, adding eight new routes, after the country scrapped its aviation tax at the beginning of last month. That will add to pressure on local rivals such as SAS and Norwegian Air. Ryanair chief marketing officer Dara Brady called on Sweden also to freeze airport charges and potentially offer additional incentives for growth, saying this could allow Ryanair to double its Swedish traffic by 2030. "The market is well capable of growing significantly here over the next number of years," Brady told a news conference.
