Feature: UAE continues to strengthen humanitarian aid for Sudan
Since the outbreak of the conflict in 2023, the UAE has provided $600.4 million in humanitarian aid to the Sudanese people, including a $200 million pledge made at the High-Level Humanitarian Conference for the People of Sudan held in Addis Ababa in February.
The UAE launched an air bridge that deployed 162 aircraft carrying essential food, medical, and relief supplies. In addition, the UAE dispatched multiple humanitarian aid ships to support those affected within Sudan as well as Sudanese refugees in Chad and Uganda, delivering 13,168 tonnes of food, medical, and relief items.
It reflects the UAE's commitment to fostering a comprehensive regional and global response to the crisis in Sudan, coordinating relief efforts to alleviate the suffering of the Sudanese people and extending support to those in need.
Following the directives of President His Highness Sheikh Mohamed bin Zayed Al Nahyan, the UAE inaugurated the Madhol Field Hospital in March in the Northern Bahr el Ghazal state of South Sudan to significantly improve the access to quality healthcare. The 100-bed capacity hospital – under the supervision of the International Humanitarian and Philanthropic Council – offers several specialised clinics to treat two million people. It's the third healthcare facility built by the UAE to support Sudanese refugees in neighboring countries. The first two field hospitals in Amdjarass and Abéché, Chad offers medical care to approximately 90,000 people.
During the inauguration, Sheikh Shakhboot bin Nahyan Al Nahyan, Minister of State, highlighted that 'Madhol Field Hospital embodies the legacy of generosity and giving established by the late Sheikh Zayed bin Sultan Al Nahyan'.
Furthermore, he underscored the UAE's unwavering commitment to work alongside regional and international partners to ensure stability and peace for the Sudanese people.
In March, Sheikh Shakhboot had visited the Gorom Refugee Camp in South Sudan's Juba to mark Zayed Humanitarian Day and reiterated the need to strengthen humanitarian responses.
In April 2024, the UAE pledged $100 million for humanitarian initiatives in Sudan and its neighbouring countries, and pledged an additional $10.25 million to the United Nations to support Sudanese refugee women affected by the ongoing crisis.
At the time, Reem bint Ebrahim Al Hashimy, Minister of State for International Cooperation, said, "Through this additional contribution, the UAE reaffirms its unwavering commitment to supporting those affected by conflict, especially women and children, who are often the most vulnerable.'
Notably, the UAE plans to implement additional developmental projects, such as drilling eight water wells and constructing 16 health facilities in the Kiryandongo Refugee Camp, that aim to enhance the living conditions of Sudanese refugees.
In support of education, the UAE signed a US$4 million agreement with UNICEF to support Sudanese refugee education in Chad.
In a report issued in January 30, the World Food Programme (WFP) said it is working tirelessly to scale up food and nutrition assistance for millions across Sudan, aiming to double the number of beneficiaries to reach 7 million people.
Since launching its large-scale food aid campaign in late 2024, WFP has managed to access hard-to-reach locations, including Zamzam camp in North Darfur, South Khartoum, and Jebesh in West Kordofan.
Sudan continues to face a catastrophic humanitarian crisis, with approximately 24.6 million people – nearly half the country's population -- experiencing acute food insecurity and the displacement of 1.1 million people.
Sudan has long been a central focus of the UAE's humanitarian work, beginning in the 1970s when the UAE's Founding Father, the late Sheikh Zayed bin Sultan Al Nahyan, supported the development of the Haiya-Port Sudan Road, which played a pivotal role in the country's commercial, industrial and agricultural growth.
Since then, the UAE has continued to launch developmental and economic projects in Sudan, boosting foreign investment, creating job opportunities, and offering consistent humanitarian support during times of crisis.

The UAE has delivered more than $1.5 billion in critical humanitarian support to Gaza since the start of the war with Israel, authorities revealed on Friday. The Ministry of Foreign Affairs set out the scale of the country's commitment to the besieged enclave and pledged to continue to deliver key support amid 'continuing catastrophic conditions'. In a message on social media, the ministry said the Emirates provided more support to Gaza than any other country, according to the Financial Tracking Service of the United Nations Office for the Co-ordination of Humanitarian Affairs. The assistance includes providing medical support to 72,280 patients at hospitals in the UAE and the floating hospital in Al Arish, Egypt. More than 78,000 tonnes of aid have also been distributed to Gaza in partnership with international organisations. "The UAE continues to respond to the humanitarian crisis in Gaza, working to ease the severe suffering amid continuing catastrophic conditions," the ministry said. "As part of its steadfast humanitarian commitment, the UAE has delivered medical and relief aid to the Strip through all available means, by land, sea, and air, in addition to providing over $1.5 billion in financial assistance. "The UAE has also received hundreds of wounded and injured individuals for medical treatment in its hospitals. "These efforts reflect the UAE's enduring commitment to supporting the brotherly Palestinian people, and the country remains firmly dedicated to continuing its support for all those in need." Show of solidarity A UAE aid ship carrying 7,166 tonnes of supplies for Gaza left Khalifa Port in Abu Dhabi on July 21. The Khalifa is heading to Al Arish Port in Egypt laden with 4,372 tonnes of food, 1,433 tonnes of shelter materials, 860 tonnes of medical supplies and 501 tonnes of health supplies, state news agency Wam reported. It is the largest aid vessel to be sent by the Emirates and comes as part of Operation Gallant Knight 3. It brings the total volume of aid sent by the UAE to Gaza to 77,266 tonnes. The UAE on Sunday resumed air drop aid missions to the Gaza Strip, in partnership with Jordan. The country's leadership has consistently stressed the need to secure a ceasefire in Gaza, improve the flow of aid into the territory and to pursue peace based on a two state solution. President Sheikh Mohamed on Wednesday held a phone call with UK Prime Minister Keir Starmer regarding the worsening humanitarian crisis. The UAE leader praised Mr Starmer's statements regarding Britain's intention to recognise the Palestinian state. At least 60,249 Palestinians have been killed and 147,089 wounded since the war with Israel began in October 2023, according to the Hamas-run Gazan health ministry.

The UAE demonstrated utmost readiness and high professionalism during its swift intervention to address the escalating medical challenges in the Gaza Strip. This was evident through its presence on the ground via the Emirati field hospital inside the Strip, the floating hospital deployed to Egypt's Al Arish city, the transfer of critical and severe cases to UAE hospitals for treatment, and the dispatch of various medical aid and supplies to enhance Gaza's health sector capabilities. The UAE committed to hosting 1,000 Palestinian cancer patients of all ages, as well as 1,000 children with their families. The facility includes a medical and administrative team across various specialties, such as anaesthesiology, general surgery, orthopaedics, and emergency medicine. By April 2025, the hospital had treated approximately 10,370 cases. It has a capacity of 100 beds, operating rooms, intensive care units, radiology, a laboratory, a pharmacy, and medical warehouses. In addition to on-the-ground support, the UAE has also facilitated the transfer of critical patients to its hospitals. Under the directives of President His Highness Sheikh Mohamed Bin Zayed Al Nahyan, the UAE committed to hosting 1,000 Palestinian cancer patients of all ages, as well as 1,000 Palestinian children with their families, to ensure they receive complete healthcare until they can return home. In February 2024, the UAE dispatched an integrated floating hospital off the coast of Al Arish to provide medical support to Palestinians. By May 14, a total of 2,634 patients and family members had arrived in the UAE, demonstrating the country's commitment to providing necessary treatment. Medical and health supplies constitute a significant part of the total humanitarian aid the UAE continues to deliver to Gaza since the beginning of the crisis. These include various types of medicines and equipment, such as dialysis machines, ultrasound devices, lung resuscitation devices, wheelchairs, artificial respiration masks, and ambulances. After 500 days since the launch of Operation Chivalrous Knight 3, the UAE has provided more than 1,200 tonnes of medical materials and supplies to support Gaza's hospitals. The health system was further reinforced with 17 ambulances equipped with the latest technology.
