Charlie Raglan's own goal earns Preston a hard-fought Carabao Cup win at Barrow
It was tough luck on debutant Winterbottom, who produced a series of fine saves to keep the Cumbrians on level terms.
But it was far from a one-sided contest as Andy Whing's side looked to shake off two opening fourth-tier defeats.
North End goalkeeper Jack Walton produced a vital stop to deny Connor Mahoney, moments before Raglan's 66th-minute mistake.
Walton was beaten when Mahoney tried his lucky from close range, while the midfielder screwed a shot wide at the end of the opening half.
Tyler Walker also put the ball in the net but referee Ross Joyce ruled the striker had kicked it out of Walton's hands.
North End, whose only previous visit to Holker Street resulted in a 1971 League Cup victory, created plenty of chances to ensure a wider margin of victory.
But Preston-born Winterbottom and poor finishing prevented a second goal.
The Bluebirds almost forced penalties as former North End midfielder Tom Barkhuizen struck the woodwork in the 89th minute but the visitors held on.

Rangers' De Bruyne takes centre stage - even if some want him to shut up

It might be a low bar, but Rangers midfielder Lyall Cameron enjoyed a more memorable full debut in midweek than for his previous club. On the equivalent occasion for Dundee six years ago, he was replaced at half time. It was a cold Friday night in Dunfermline, no-one's idea of any fun. Cameron referenced this difficult introduction in the matchday programme for Rangers' impressive Champions League qualifying win over Viktoria Plzen on Tuesday night, when he was one of the stars of the show. Advertisement Hide Ad Advertisement Hide Ad In a wide-ranging A-Z feature, where there's a question for each letter of the alphabet, he was asked - under N for 'Newcomer' – about his debut in professional football. 'My first start was for Dundee against Dunfermline away,' he explained. 'We were 2-0 down at half-time and I got taken off, so that was rubbish! I was 16 and it was really tough.' Lyall Cameron salutes the Rangers crowd after coming off against Viktoria Plzen. | SNS Group In fact, he had already turned 17 although he made his debut for Dundee as a substitute in a League Cup win at Raith Rovers when 16 earlier that season. His age - 17 and three months is still young for the hurly burly of the Championship – was one of the mitigating factors in his full debut being cut so short. Manager James McPake later admitted he removed him because he didn't deserve to be involved in the poor performance his more experienced teammates were managing to produce. There was little chance he would suffer this fate earlier this week. Cameron made an assured first start for his new club. Only an injury picked up in a high energy first-half performance could have persuaded Russell Martin to stop Cameron re-appearing for the second half, when the playmaker continued to impress with his energy, intelligence and tidiness in possession. He was eventually replaced after 73 minutes to sustained applause. 'Played like a young Alex MacDonald – the highest praise I could give him,' one Rangers supporter told me afterwards with reference to someone regarded as the heartbeat of the Ibrox side in the 1970s. Advertisement Hide Ad Advertisement Hide Ad The Rangers comments that irked Dundee fans Cameron's display might have been even more eye-catching were it not for his teammate Oliver Antman, an even newer signing, burning up the wing and contributing an assist in the 3-0 win. However, Cameron still earned praise. Most satisfying of all for him when one remembers he was signed on a pre-contract long before Martin arrived were the words of his manager, who raved about his "quality" and use of the ball. Loose passes might not be associated with Cameron but it's not a surprise, given he is still only 22, if loose words might occasionally afflict him. Expert at getting himself out of trouble in tight areas of the pitch, he talked himself into trouble on the eve of the fixture against the Czech Republic side. Nominated to handled player media duties in what was a pretty strong indication that he would be in the team to face Plzen, Cameron remarked on the step up going from a 'small club' – it's fair to assume he meant 'smaller club' - like Dundee to Rangers. In a different interview, this time for the BBC, he compounded this by suggesting it didn't feel like he was a full-time footballer at Dundee compared with Rangers. Lyall Cameron is likely to start against his former club Dundee on Saturday. | SNS Group 'To be honest, it's been a totally different world I think; the speed of play and the intensity and everything is just totally different,' he said. 'It's almost like a different world for me, to be honest. It's a different job now I am here: it's a full-time footballer whereas it's a bit different in Dundee.' Advertisement Hide Ad Advertisement Hide Ad Former Dundee and Hibs player turned pundit Tam McManus was among those who picked up on this on X. '2nd time he has said something like this,' he wrote. 'Pretty disrespectful to Dundee FC and the coaches who gave him the opportunity & platform to go and play for a bigger club.' It's understood Cameron regrets how these answers came across as he prepares to make his Ibrox league debut on Saturday evening in a game covered live on television by Premier Sports. Reception likely to be split It will surprise absolutely no one who the opposition are……Dundee. It's how football tends to work. It means the little blond-haired midfielder – who younger Rangers fans have dubbed the Dundonian De Bruyne - will be the focus of even more attention just over 80 days after his brace against St Johnstone guaranteed Dundee's Premiership safety and sparked a pitch invasion by joyous fans. It's fair to say his comments this week have not gone down well with many Dundee supporters. One of the more moderate posts on the inevitable Cameron pre-match thread on the main Dundee fans' forum perhaps sums up the general feeling. Advertisement Hide Ad Advertisement Hide Ad 'I won't boo him but no doubt others will and I can understand why,' one visitor commented. Others were more indignant. 'Shut your little puss,' someone advises Cameron, the vehemence of which might also be rooted in something the player said after Dundee played Rangers at Ibrox in a League Cup last 16 tie last September. Lyall Cameron made his Dundee debut against Dunfermline. | SNS Group Cameron was already being linked with a move away and was asked about where he envisaged that next step might be. He openly replied that playing somewhere like Rangers would appeal. He later admitted the uncertainty about his future affected his form but he finished the season strongly, supplying the superbly threaded through ball for Scott Tiffoney to score an important goal in Cameron's last appearance at Dens against Ross County. He was given a rousing ovation when substituted despite some coolness having been previously apparent following the news, announced somewhat unhelpfully in February, that he had signed a pre-contract deal at Rangers. Dundee's official farewell announcement in May was heartfelt, rightly so, as were Cameron's comments in the same piece, where he mentioned how 'proud' he was to have played so many games for the Dens Park club. The article also highlighted that the player, signed as a youth player after he had been let go by Dundee United, had scored 'a magical dark blue number of 33 goals'. Magical because that was the number worn by Claudio Caniggia, who signed for the club aged 33 before leaving to join…..Rangers. Advertisement Hide Ad Advertisement Hide Ad

Kyogo's first Birmingham goal has Celtic fans ‘jealous' – but 'embarrassing' moment sparks X-rated outburst from rival
FORMER Celtic striker Kyogo Furuhashi was in the thick of things as Birmingham dumped Sheffield United out of the Carabao Cup. In a frantic opening 15 minutes, the ex-Hoops favourite struck his first Blues goal before being involved in a contentions moment that sparked a FURIOUS reaction from an opponent. 7 Kyogo is off the mark as Birmingham player Credit: Getty 7 The Celtic hero was in the thick of the action Credit: X/ITV SPORT 7 NINTCHDBPICT001016166294 Credit: X/ITV SPORT 7 He was involved in an angry clash with Jack Robinson Credit: X/ITV SPORT 7 The Sheffield United defender was furious Credit: X/ITV SPORT Kyogo, 30, was a firm favourite among the Celtic fans during his glittering four-year stint between 2021 and 2025. The Japan international bagged 85 goals in 165 games for the Parkhead club after moving to Glasgow from his homeland. Kyogo's goals inspired Celtic to nine major honours, including the treble in 2023. Many Hoops fans were gutted when the striker moved to France with Rennes in January in a bumper £10million deal. His time in Ligue 1 was an absolute nightmare, however, and was restricted to just six appearances in which he failed to score. After just six months, he moved on again last month, joining newly promoted Birmingham City in the English Championship. While he couldn't score in the opening day 1-1 draw with Ipswich at the weekend - albeit had a splendid strike disallowed - he didn't take long to open his account. Teammate Demarai Gray pounced on a horror defensive error just five minutes into last night's cup clash with Sheffield United, setting up the easiest of tap-ins for Kyogo who certainly wasn't going to pass up such a golden chance. The prolific frontman's first goal for the club set them on their way to a 2-1 win as they sealed progression in the League Cup. Seeing Kyogo scoring - and smiling again - had many Celtic fans feeling a hint of jealousy! Ex-Celtic star goes wild as he does the huddle at Oasis gig with 70,000 fans Birmingham posted: "Only two games in but you just know he's going to be a fan favourite." And several Celtic fans responded. One said: "Birmingham fans getting to experience him play for the first time is making me so jealous." Another added: "Absolute baller." A third posted: "Proud of him but heartbreaking also." While another said: "We lived it, and we loved it." Another post read: "I miss him already." Another Hoops fan added: "Good to see him enjoying his football again." Kyogo himself delivered a short message to the club's social media channels afterwards, saying: "I'm really happy to score my first goal, I will keep on running and helping the team by scoring many more goals. "Keep right on." As mentioned, Kyogo was very much in the thick of the action at St Andrew's in a busy opening period. He was involved in a tussle with Sheffield United captain Jack Robinson at the corner flag - and it was an incident that left the Blades defender absolutely irate. Robinson leaned on Kyogo's back, sending the striker off balance with the ball in play. It struck Kyogo's foot and Robinson saw the ball out for a throw-in. The two players' momentum took them to the advertising hoarding and Kyogo appeared to kick the ball away - whether it was deliberate or not, only he will know - and that did NOT impress Robinson. The 31-year old remonstrated with the assistant referee before Kyogo bumped into him. That left an already angry Robinson less than impressed, and the former Liverpool trainee put his hand on the striker, who then tumbled to the ground. And it's fair to say the defender felt Kyogo had gone down all too easily. The referee arrived on the scene, brandishing a yellow card to the defender who then unleashed an X-rated outburst towards the officials. He could be heard blasting: "He f****** kicked the ball away!" As the assistant referee then tries to calm Robinson down, he's met with a rather resounding "f*** off" from the Blades skipper. Many fans reacting to the club on social media felt Kyogo himself was perhaps fortunate not to see a yellow card for his part in the incident! One said: "Should have been a yellow for the dive and holding his face." An annoyed Sheffield United fan blasted: "Embarrassing from the Birmingham player really." Another said: "That's embarrassing." While another fumed: "Should have been a yellow for kicking the ball away then another for the horrific dive." Gustavo Hamer cancelled out Kyogo's strike in the second half before Jay Stansfield struck the Blues' winner three minutes from time. 7 Robinson is shown a yellow card Credit: X/ITV SPORT 7 The decision left the Blades captain raging Credit: X/ITV SPORT Have YOU got a point for Kris Boyd? It's been a superb start to the season for Derek McInnes as Hearts made it two wins from two in the Scottish Premiership, thanks to a dramatic 3-2 win over Dundee United at Tannadice. The win means McInnes maintains his 100% win record so far as Jambos boss, after the Gorgie side also won all four games in the Premier Sports Cup group stage. Hearts will face St Mirren in the last 16 of the Cup, who almost held Celtic to a goalless draw at Parkhead on the opening day, but were undone by a late winner. Stephen Robinson's men are yet to score in the Premiership, but topped their group in the League Cup group stage. Advertisement Hide Ad Advertisement Hide Ad For the Saints, it's a chance to really kick their season into gear, for Hearts it could be a statement win that proves their ambition for silverware this season. Here's everything you need to know about the Last 16 Premier Sports Cup tie: When is St Mirren vs Hearts? St Mirren vs Hearts will take place at the SMISA Stadium in Paisley on Saturday 16th August. Kick off time will be 3pm. Where can I watch St Mirren vs Hearts? The match will be available to live stream on the Premier Sports Player. What are other key dates in the Premier Sports Cup? In the event of a draw after normal time, there will be 30 minutes of extra time to be played. Thereafter, if necessary, a penalty shootout will determine the outcome of the match. Advertisement Hide Ad Advertisement Hide Ad Whoever emerges victorious will advance to the Quarter Final stage, played on the weekend of September 20th/21st. The remaining games will be played at Hampden, with the semi finals taking place on the weekend of November 1st/2nd, before the final on Sunday December 14th. What is the team news ahead of St Mirren vs Hearts? With the current crisis Hearts have in the right back area, Adam Forrester returned for a bounce game with Ross County yesterday. Following the injury to Christian Borchgrevink, who is out for 6-8 weeks, Forrester may be recalled by McInnes from his co-operation loan with St Johnstone. Forrester has already played in the group stage of the Premier Sports Cup and looks like a viable short term option for McInnes. The Hearts boss was forced to play Alan Forrest at wing back and Frankie Kent at right centre back against United, with both players being substituted at half time. McInnes will also have a decision to make about the goalkeeping situation. Zander Clark will be disappointed with his performance against Dundee United as he was beaten by a free kick and near post strike. The Hearts number one got bailed out by his teammates on Sunday, however his place in the starting XI may be vulnerable. Advertisement Hide Ad Advertisement Hide Ad With nine subs available in the matchday squad for Saturday, as well as Beni Baningime and Calem Nieuwenhof potentially available for selection, McInnes can't complain about his options for the Paisley clash, where Hearts will be backed by a sold-out away end.
