Six persons involved in running 'unauthorised' fertility centre arrested

Hyderabad, Jul 29 (PTI) Six persons allegedly involved in running an 'unauthorised" fertility centre at Secunderabad here were arrested, police said on Tuesday.
The centre is a branch of an Ahmedabad-headquartered company, they said.
The centre was found collecting sperm from donors and sending it to Ahmedabad for analysis. It later shared the sperm with medical facilities in Hyderabad for the purpose of fertility, they said. Further investigation was underway.
A police official denied media reports that beggars or daily wage labourers were hired for collecting sperm.

The arrest of the six persons comes close on the heels of an 'illegal" surrogacy and baby-selling racket being busted in the city two days ago with the arrest of eight persons, including the prime accused doctor and owner of a fertility clinic.
The racket came to light after a couple discovered through a DNA test that the child, supposedly born through surrogacy, was not theirs, prompting them to approach the police. 400 kg hydroponic ganja recovered from womans luggage at Hyderabad airport
Hyderabad, Jul 30 (PTI) The Narcotics Control Bureau (NCB) on Wednesday recovered 400 kg of hydroponic ganja from the luggage of a woman passenger at the Rajiv Gandhi International Airport here, an official release said. The value of the ganja is estimated to be Rs 40 crore, the release issued by the NCB said. Acting on intelligence outputs, NCB officials intercepted the woman passenger and seized 400 kg of the contraband from her two check-in bags, it said. Nimisha Priya case: Claims made by Kerala-based cleric incorrect; avoid speculation, say govt sources
Days after the Grand Mufti of India, Kanthapuram AP Aboobacker Musaliyar, claimed that Kerala nurse Nimisha Priya's death sentence in Yemen has been overturned, government sources said that the claims are incorrect, reported PTI on Wednesday. The government sources also advised that any speculation on this sensitive matter should be avoided. 'We have seen reports making claims regarding the case of Nimisha Priya. These are incorrect. We urge people to avoid misinformation and speculation on the sensitive matter," PTI quoted government sources as saying. The clarification came after the Grand Mufti reportedly said the Prime Minister's Office and the Ministry of External Affairs are aware of his efforts in the Priya case. On Monday, reports citing a statement from the office of Kanthapuram AP Abubakr Musliyar said the decision to completely cancel the death sentence was made during a high-level meeting held in Yemen's capital, Sanaa. LiveMint couldn't verify the Grand Mufti's statement. However, Indian officials handling the case have not confirmed the development so far. The 37-year-old Indian nurse from Kerala, Nimisha Priya, was scheduled to be executed on July 16, after she was convicted of killing a Yemeni national in June 2018, a decision that was upheld by the country's Supreme Judicial Council in November 2023. Originally scheduled to happen on July 16, her execution was halted temporarily just a day before that date. She was convicted of murdering her Yemeni business partner, Talal Abdo Mahdi, in 2017. She was sentenced to death in 2020, and her final appeal was rejected in 2023.

Attack on hosp staffer: No bail for suspect's kin
Thane: Kalyan court on Wednesday rejected the bail application of Ranjit Bhuleshwar Jha, brother of prime accused Gokul Jha, in a case related to the assault on a woman receptionist at a local children's hospital. The victim had filed an affidavit opposing Jha's bail application, appearing before court on Tuesday and pleading he should not be released. "If court grants bail to Gokul's brother Ranjit Jha, he will come and attack me and my family again," stating that his release could jeopardize investigation, compromise witnesses and exert pressure on judicial officers. The brothers had been booked under BNS. Gokul Jha remains in custody. PTI
