Time of India30-07-2025
Thane: Kalyan court on Wednesday rejected the bail application of Ranjit Bhuleshwar Jha, brother of prime accused Gokul Jha, in a case related to the assault on a woman receptionist at a local children's hospital.
The victim had filed an affidavit opposing Jha's bail application, appearing before court on Tuesday and pleading he should not be released. "If court grants bail to Gokul's brother Ranjit Jha, he will come and attack me and my family again," stating that his release could jeopardize investigation, compromise witnesses and exert pressure on judicial officers. The brothers had been booked under BNS. Gokul Jha remains in custody.

After 'Dog Babu', ‘Donald Trump' applies for Bihar residence certificate amid voter list revision, Opposition reacts

A bizarre string of fake applications in Bihar amid electoral roll revision drive continues, with the latest being an online request for a residence certificate in the name of US President Donald Trump. A screengrab of the fake residence certificate application submitted in the name of US President Donald Trump from Bihar's Samastipur district, now under investigation.(Screengrab from X/@ANI) The application that was filed from Samastipur comes after similar prank entries in the names of 'Dog Babu', 'Dogesh Babu', and even 'Sonalika Tractor', which carried the photo of a Bhojpuri actor. Authorities have rejected all such applications and lodged FIRs. In Trump's case, the application submitted on July 29 claimed he was a resident of Hasanpur village in Mohiuddin Nagar block, with a passport-style photo and even his actual parents' names — Frederick Christ Trump and Mary Anne MacLeod — listed, reported news agency PTI. The district administration rejected the application on August 4 and called the act a 'diabolical attempt' to disrupt the ongoing SIR drive. 'It appears there is a diabolical attempt to negatively impact the special intensive revision of electoral rolls which is underway as per the instructions of the Election Commission,' the administration said in a statement, as cited by PTI. The Samastipur district administration confirmed that a case has been registered at the Cyber Police Station for appropriate investigation. 'In view of the seriousness of the offence, a case has been lodged at the Cyber police station, Samastipur, for appropriate investigation and action,' the statement added. Opposition leaders slam electoral roll revision The incident has drawn strong reactions from the Opposition. Congress leader Randeep Singh Surjewala shared a news clip on social media that falsely claimed a certificate had been issued to the Trump application. 'This is the biggest proof that electoral roll revision in Bihar is a fraud, aimed at stealing votes. The Congress and Rahul Gandhi are fighting to thwart this design. Keeping quiet in such a situation is a crime. Let us all raise our voices and become watchdogs of democracy,' Surjewala said. The administration clarified, saying, 'The certificate has never been issued. Somebody has deliberately made such an application and it was rejected during scrutiny. An FIR has also been lodged. The guilty will not be spared,' the response read. Trinamool Congress MP Mahua Moitra also criticised the Election Commission, mocking the process, she shared a video on 'X'. 'An exercise which the Election Commission has put its stamp on, which says it is comprehensive and it is accurate. Why don't you decide for yourself? We have in the district of Samastipur, an online application in the name of Donald Trump,' Moitra said. She further said the ongoing SIR was 'nothing but an exercise in mass disenfranchisement', claiming 65 lakh voters had been deleted without proper discussion. 'These forms are including mythical or animal photos and clearly made up names and addresses. The Lord Ram application lists Raja Dashrath and Maa Kaushalya as the parents... So this is the state of the SIR application,' Moitra added, referring to similar fake entries found in Khagaria district. (With PTI inputs)

MNS workers barge into PMC chief's office during meeting, create ruckus

MNS activists on Wednesday barged into the newly appointed Pune municipal commissioner Naval Kishore Ram's office while he was holding a meeting, seeking an enquiry into alleged missing items from the official bungalow of the civic chief. The Pune Municipal Corporation (PMC) has decided to file a police complaint against the MNS workers. Ram is yet to move into the official bungalow of the municipal commissioner in Model Colony after it was vacated by his predecessor Rajendra Bhosale. Various items including TV sets and ACs have reportedly gone missing from the bungalow. However, civic officials are tight-lipped over the incident. A senior officer from Pune city police said, 'We are in the process of registering an offence under BNS Section 132, which pertains to assault or criminal force to deter public servant from discharge of his duty. The offence is being registered at Shivaji Nagar police station.' Following the ruckus created by the MNS workers, Ram said, 'I was holding a meeting with over 50 officials when the MNS workers barged into the meeting hall. They could have waited outside till the meeting got over. Instead, they misbehaved. It is inappropriate to treat the municipal commissioner this way. The PMC will file a police complaint against the MNS workers,' he said. The MNS workers led by Kishore Shinde barged into Ram's office to give a memorandum on the 'missing' items. The MNS workers alleged the municipal commissioner called them 'goons who were defaming Marathi culture by their behaviour'. 'We came to demand an enquiry into the items that reportedly have gone missing from the bungalow. This is in the interest of the Pune civic body and not us but the municipal commissioner was rude to us,' Shinde said. Earlier, Ram said, 'I don't know what all was in the bungalow. It is wrong to defame the former municipal commissioner for the alleged missing items. I have asked for an enquiry into it. It is the responsibility of the civic department concerned responsible for the maintainance of the bungalow to ensure what is brought inside or taken out of the bungalow.' The municipal commissioner said he was staying at another government facility till the bungalow was vacated. 'I have a lot of my goods and items that have to be shifted to the official bungalow. We just wanted some changes in the kitchen and hall of the bungalow so some renovation work was taken up,' he said. On the purchase of new items proposed by the civic department for the bungalow, Ram said he was not aware of it and would ask the department concerned. Chhattisgarh High Court acquits man convicted for murdering kin on grounds of ‘legal insanity'

The Chhattisgarh High Court recently acquitted a 25-year-old man who was awarded a life sentence for murdering his father and grandmother, after his counsel was able to prove that the appellant was of unsound mind. Holding that Dhamtari resident Mahesh Verma, who had been convicted for the 2021 double murder, fitted the term legally insane, the court said that the Investigating Officer admitted that during the investigation, he did not procure any documents relating to psychiatric treatment of the accused from his family members. It further said that despite a preliminary report clearly referring to the appellant as a mental patient, no certificate from the treating psychiatrist was obtained, and the trial court merely relied on a report from the inquiry under Section 328 CrPC (which assesses competency to stand trial), not the mental status at the time of the act which is the legally relevant consideration under Section 22 BNS (or section 84 of the IPC referring to an Act by a person of unsound mind – Nothing is an offence which is done by a person who, at the time of doing it, by reason of unsoundness of mind, is incapable of knowing the nature of the act, or that he is doing what is either wrong or contrary to law). The HC held that an accused who seeks exoneration from liability for an act under Section 84 has to prove legal insanity and not medical insanity. Legal insanity 'Since the term insanity or unsoundness of mind has not been defined in the Penal Code, it carries different meaning in different contexts and describes varying degrees of mental disorder. A distinction is to be made between legal insanity and medical insanity. The court is concerned with legal insanity and not with medical insanity,' the verdict delivered by Judge Bibhu Datta Guru and Chief Justice Ramesh Sinha said. Mahesh's counsel, Abhishek Sinha, had argued before the High Court that his client was suffering from insanity at the time, and a non-examination of his mental state created a serious infirmity in the case. Mr. Sinha said the accused had suffered a head injury during Covid 19 lockdown, and his mental state was not good, and he had been under treatment for the last year at Raipur Mmental Hospital. The incident On April 13, 2021, at around 11 pm, Mahesh, who was kept locked in his room because he was mentally unstable, demanded that his mother, Rekha, open the door so he could get water. His mother was fearful and did not open the door; she called her husband, Pannalal Verma, who subsequently opened the door. When his family asked him why he was creating a commotion, Mahesh said, 'I am Hanuman ji, Bajrang Bali, and Durga.' He then pushed away his mother and started attacking his father and grandmother, Triveni. His mother went to seek help from the neighbours but by the time she returned, Pannalal and Triveni were dead. The matter went to a Sessions court which convicted Mahesh for double murder and sentenced him to life imprisonment in February 2024.
