‘The Wedding Banquet' Trailer: Bowen Yang and Kelly Marie Tran Conspire for the Sake of Love
Co-written by the original film's scribe James Schamus and also starring Han Gi-Chan, Joan Chen, and Oscar-winner Yuh-Jung Youn, the official synopsis for the film reads, ''The Wedding Banquet' follows a chosen family of four friends each struggling to navigate their adulthood responsibilities and relationships. Angela (Tran) and her partner Lee (Gladstone) have had repeated unsuccessful IVF treatments, and the financial strain is worsening. Min (Han) and his commitment-phobic boyfriend, Chris (Yang), can't agree on taking their relationship to the next level, but Min's student visa is running out. In an attempt to solve the friend group's ever-growing problems, Min proposes marriage to Angela to secure his green card in exchange for funding Lee's IVF treatment. When Min's skeptical grandmother makes a surprise visit and insists on an extravagant wedding, the friends' commitment to their scheme — and to one another — begins to waiver.'

'The Wedding Banquet' had its premiere at the 2025 Sundance Film Festival. In our review of the film, IndieWire said, 'The story begins conventionally, churning out exposition to introduce the foursome. And for a while, each couple scarcely amounts to more than a broad stroke and a conflict. Lee is a charmer eager for her in vitro fertilization treatments to result in pregnancy, while the crankier Angela worries that her strained relationship with her mother (Chen) might impact her own parenting skills. The rudderless Chris and trust-fund endowed Min, meanwhile, are navigating Chris's reluctance to commit to a marriage that would allow Min, who's in danger of losing his green card, to stay in the country.'
Speaking to IndieWire at Sundance, Gladstone shared that she was able to influence not only how her character is presented but even her name. Originally supposed to be called Liz, Gladstone got Ahn to change it to Lee to honor the Indigenous community in the film's setting of Seattle.
'I decided that, because it takes place in Seattle, [and] there is a significantly underrepresented tribal entity fighting for federal recognition, that is Chief Seattle's [Si'ahl's] nation, Duwamish,' the actress said. 'Aren't currently federally recognized as a tribe, they've been trying to be … for some time. So, art is transcendence, it's how we shape societies, it was important for me to make my character Duwamish. A Duwamish person on Duwamish land has not really been seen in cinema before.'
Watch the trailer for 'The Wedding Banquet below.' The film opens in theaters April 18 from Bleecker Street.

YAHOO POLL: Has Fantastic Four revived the MCU for you?
The Fantastic Four: The First Steps had its world premiere on Monday (21 July) night and the first reactions to the film were generally positive. The film was under immense pressure and expectations, no doubt due to its troubled cinematic history. Its first iteration under 20th Century Fox in 2005 was a flop. A reboot in 2015, also under 20th Century Fox, reimagined Marvel's First Family as a dark, gritty comic book film but it didn't fare better either. YAHOO POLL: Should Astronomer CEO Andy Byron have resigned? However, Marvel can finally breathe a sigh of relief as, despite a steep drop at the box office in its second weekend, the film is sitting well with critics. If anything, the fact that it retained the top position in the second weekend is a testament to the strength of the film. Fantastic Four has garnered an 86 per cent rating with critics and a 92 per cent rating with audiences on Rotten Tomatoes. If it matters, Fantastic Four scored higher than James Gunn's Superman – which was released earlier in July. So, we want to hear from you – Has Fantastic Four revived the MCU for you? MCU boss Kevin Feige reveals why Marvel is pairing up Spider-Man and The Punisher in Brand New Day: "[It's] street-level crime as opposed to world-ending events"
When you buy through links on our articles, Future and its syndication partners may earn a commission. Tom Holland's Spider-Man is pivoting away from Multiverse plots in the upcoming Spider-Man: Brand New Day to offer fans more "street-level crime" action, according to Marvel boss Kevin Feige. "I think there's a promise at the end of No Way Home that for as sad as it is that Peter is forgotten by everyone in his life, we are seeing for the first time in the Tom Holland Spider-Man stories, him being a proper Spider-Man," Feige recently told GamesRadar+ and other media outlets during a roundtable. "It's him being by himself, dedicated to saving the city and dealing with, for lack of [a] better [term], street-level crime as opposed to world-ending events that he faced when working with the other characters," he added. After participating in numerous cosmic adventures like Avengers: Infinity War and Endgame, Peter Parker is staying in New York for his next adventure. It's only natural, then, that his world collides with the events of Daredevil: Born Again, released earlier this year. Jon Bernthal's Punisher was announced last month as one of the major characters in the film after reappearing for a couple of episodes of the Disney+ show. Feige explained that he saw this movie as a great opportunity to pair up two fan-favorite heroes that had never interacted before on screen. "When you do that, you say, 'Okay, who are the other street-level characters that we've never seen them interact with?' And of course, I love that Punisher started in a Spider-Man comic, on that great cover," said Feige, referring to the Spider-Man cover where The Punisher made his first appearance, The Amazing Spider-Man #129, released in February 1974. "I don't want to say too much," he continued, "but Destin [Daniel Cretton]… Wait, I will say too much. Destin is doing an amazing job right now on that movie that starts shooting very soon, and he's got eight or nine comic covers up on his wall in his art department that he is bringing to life in this movie. It is super cool." We can't wait to see which other comics and covers have inspired the upcoming film, which is being helmed by Shang-Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings director Destin Daniel Cretton. Filming is set to start this summer, with Tom Holland teasing that the film will "lean into that old-school filmmaking" and use "real locations". The star has also hinted at a "fresh start" for his character following the events of the Spider-Man: No Way Home ending. Zendaya and Jacob Batalon are set to reprise their roles as Michelle 'MJ' Jones-Watson and Ned Leeds, respectively, while new cast members include Stranger Things star Sadie Sink and The Bear's Liza Colón-Zayas. Spider-Man: Brand New Day is set to premiere on July 31, 2026, as part of Marvel Phase 6. Marvel confirms a major Avengers actor is joining Tom Holland's Spider-Man in Brand New Day along with a returning villain
When you buy through links on our articles, Future and its syndication partners may earn a commission. Tom Holland is going to be in very good company in Spider-Man: Brand New Day, as seasoned MCU star Mark Ruffalo has joined the official cast as The Hulk. Ruffalo has been part of the superhero franchise for 14 years, starring in all the Avengers movies and fan-favorite titles like Thor: Ragnarok. Last time we saw his Bruce Banner was in Disney Plus' TV series She-Hulk: Attorney at Law, which starred his cousin Jennifer Walters (Tatiana Maslany). The Hulk is not the only Marvel character returning for the upcoming Spidey movie, which is now filming in Scotland. Along with the previously announced addition of Jon Bernthal's The Punisher to the cast, Marvel announced that Michael Mando is set to reprise his role of the Scorpion. The villain first debuted in Spider-Man: Homecoming, where he was arrested by the FBI after the Staten Island ferry incident and swore vengeance against Spider-Man. It seems like he will make good on his promise in the new movie. This cast announcement comes on the back of film set leaks that might just have confirmed Mister Negative as the film's villain. A bystander on the streets of Glasgow spotted a heavy-duty armored truck with a red demon mark on its side that resembles the logo of the Inner Demons. A recent glimpse behind the scenes also hinted at D-list villains forming part of the film's rogues' gallery. Tom Holland's new Spider-Man suit was partially revealed this week too, giving us some serious Sam Raimi vibes. As filming continues, we're hoping to get even more details about the movie, which has yet to reveal an official plot. We expect the story to follow on from the events of the ending of Spider-Man: No Way Home, which saw Peter Parker's existence erased from everyone's minds. Plunged back into anonymity, the New York-based superhero will focus, as Marvel Studios boss Kevin Feige explained recently, on "street-level crime as opposed to world-ending events." Brand New Day also appears to be set before Avengers: Doomsday. Zendaya and Jacob Batalon are set to reprise their roles as MJ and Ned, with Stranger Things actor Sadie Sink joining the cast in an undisclosed role. Spider-Man: Brand New Day will land in cinemas on July 31, 2026. For more, here is our complete guide to upcoming Marvel movies and Marvel Phase 6. Solve the daily Crossword
