‘They were trying to kill my family': Body camera footage released of teen accused of shooting Cal City officer
'She just shot a gun,' the caller says in a video released on YouTube Thursday by sheriff's investigators. 'She just put it in her pocket.'
Minutes later, an officer found the girl walking on Hickory Avenue. The encounter left both suffering from gunshot wounds.
As other officers took her into custody, the girl, Annette Garcia, said she and her family were in danger.
'I was just trying to help my family,' she says. 'They were trying to kill my family.'
Garcia, 17 at the time of the April 21 shooting, recovered from her injuries and has undergone a mental competency examination. She's due in juvenile court next week for a hearing at which the results will be discussed.
She's charged with two counts of attempted murder, assault with a gun on a peace officer, shooting at an occupied motor vehicle, attempted murder of a public official, carrying a loaded gun, possession of live ammunition by a minor, carrying a dirk or dagger and resisting arrest.
A prosecutor has said Garcia had access to unsecured guns in her mother's home.
The wounded officer, Michael Kelakios, had a bullet removed from his leg, sheriff's officials said. He fired at Garcia after she turned and shot him the moment he got out of his patrol vehicle, according to police.
An incident review board on June 5 found he acted within department policy.
The video released Thursday contains audio of a 911 call, body camera video of the wounded officer and Garcia's arrest, and photos of the damaged van and the weapons — a handgun and knife — officials said Garcia was carrying.
The round fired at the van passed through what appears to be its left side and hit a package inside.
That shooting occurred in the area of Corwin Street and Lime Avenue. No one was injured, although the woman on the 911 call was obviously shaken up.
'Let's get in the house before she shoots again,' the woman says to someone, possibly her son, whom she later mentions. 'Dude, I don't want to die.'
About nine minutes later, Kelakios confronted Garcia. Body camera video shows another officer arrive after the shooting and apply a tourniquet to Kelakios' leg.
While receiving treatment, Kelakios says, 'Hey, watch yourself. She just pulled it out and shot right at me, bro.'
He adds, 'I returned fire, but I don't know how I missed.'
He hadn't. Garcia had been hit twice, officials said.
She was found nearby and held at gunpoint as she dropped her gun. She was then placed in handcuffs. She apologized while being arrested, and kept saying she tried to help her family.

A Texas restaurant is open for business again after a vehicle came crashing through the eatery over the weekend. The incident occurred at around 4 p.m. on Saturday at Cuvee Culinary Creations in Houston, according to restaurant owner Ivory Watkins. Two content creators who were dining at the establishment narrowly missed being struck by the vehicle, unintentionally capturing shocking footage of the moment, which the restaurant later shared on its Instagram page. Nina Santiago, known online as Nina Unrated, was filming her YouTube series, "Nina Unrated Eats," alongside fellow content creator Patrick Blackwood when a driver in an SUV plowed through the floor-to-ceiling glass windows where they were seated, knocking over the table and scattering the dishes directly in front of them, according to the video footage. In the video, fellow patrons and restaurant staff can be seen in the background looking on in shock as Santiago and Blackwood scramble out of their seats. Santiago wrote in an Instagram post afterward that she was "beyond grateful to be alive." She shared several photos from inside an ambulance and the hospital where she and Blackwood were apparently treated for their injuries, which show cuts on their faces, necks, arms and hands. Santiago and Blackwood did not immediately respond to ABC News' requests for comment. Watkins described the incident as "a freak accident," telling ABC News he had just walked away from Santiago and Blackwood's table seconds prior to the moment of impact. "I was looking at my two customers and thinking, 'What is going on? This is crazy,'" he recalled. "We never know what God has in store for us -- I'm glad they're safe." Watkins said he called 911 as soon as the incident occurred, adding that the manager of the restaurant was quick to tend to Santiago and Blackwood in the immediate aftermath and helped provide care for their cuts and scrapes until paramedics arrived on the scene. Watkins said "police came out and did their due diligence" and a report was filed by the Harris County Sheriff's Office. The owner apologized for the incident, saying, "My job at my restaurant is to keep my guests safe. I fell short." "We were glad that we didn't have any more guests [at the time of the crash]," he added. "The main thing is everybody is safe." The restaurant's windows are currently boarded up, however Watkins was able to reopen for service on Sunday. He said the establishment has new safety measures in place, including two company vehicles and two employee vehicles that are parked in the parking spaces in front of the restaurant's window seating.

Grandville orthodontist facing federal child exploitation charges
GRAND RAPIDS, Mich. (WOOD) — An orthodontist who formerly practiced in Grandville is now facing federal child exploitation charges. Thomas Shannon, 43, was arrested in Frankfort, Michigan, the U.S. Attorney's Office for the Western District of Michigan announced Wednesday. He is charged by criminal complaint with sexual exploitation of a minor, attempted sexual exploitation of a minor, possession of child pornography, receipt of child pornography and attempted receipt of child pornography, according to the attorney's office. According to a criminal complaint filed in federal court Monday, a therapist reported in 2021 that a teenager had been sexually exploited. The victim told police that she had received money in exchange for sending illicit images, the complaint continues, and investigators traced the Snapchat and CashApp accounts to Shannon, who lived in Byron Township. Sex offender, busted in sting but not arrested, snagged again In 2022, amid a Kent County investigation, the complaint says Shannon hired a private forensic investigator to search his phone 'in an attempt to prove that he did not possess any child pornography.' 'The examiner, however, found child pornography and turned it over to police,' the U.S. Attorney's Office wrote in a release. Authorities found evidence that Shannon possessed and received child pornography, according to the complaint. Investigators found that Shannon had communicated with multiple minor victims whom he met online, the complaint alleges. One was just 12 years old. The complaint placed most of the victims out of state. Shannon was in January 2023. But according to the federal complaint, he was released on bond. Investigators found that he was on bond for those charges while communicating with one victim — a 13-year-old — in 2024, the complaint alleges. The state case against Shannon is pending. Donna Adelson trial Day 2 live updates: Court makes strides in jury selection
Jury selection resumes for a second day Aug. 20 in the murder trial of Donna Adelson, who is accused of helping to orchestrate the 2014 plot to kill Florida State University law professor Dan Markel. Roughly 300 people have been summoned for jury duty. Leon Circuit Judge Stephen Everett and lawyers for the state and defense are questioning each of the jurors individually behind closed doors as part of a pre-screening to find out how much media they have consumed about the case and whether that has affected their ability to serve as fair and impartial jurors. Jurors who have passed that test have been asked to return to the Leon County Courthouse at 11 a.m. Thursday for group jury selection, the last step before a final panel is picked. Just like the first day of jury selection, 50 potential jurors will be questioned in the morning and another 50 in the afternoon. On Aug. 19, 64 out of 102 potential jurors were asked to come back for group jury selection. Pretrial publicity has been a major issue raised by the defense in previous Markel trials. The defendant's son, Charlie Adelson, who was convicted in Markel's murder in 2023, claimed in his appellate brief filed in May that Everett erred by not granting a defense motion for a change of venue. Donna Adelson's attorneys also asked Everett to move the trial out of town, though he has declined so far to do so. Markel was shot in the head on July 18, 2014, after pulling into his garage of his Betton Hills home ― a shocking crime that happened as he and his ex-wife, Wendi Adelson, the defendant's daughter, were feuding in court over custody of their two sons. Prosecutors have long alleged the Adelson family wanted Markel out of the picture so Wendi Adelson and the boys could relocate to South Florida. Prosecutor asks to allow evidence about changing last name of Markel's sons Assistant State Attorney Georgia Cappleman asked Judge Stephen Everett this morning, Aug. 20, about whether communication between Donna Adelson and her daughter, Wendi Adelson, about changing her two sons' last name from Markel to Adelson can be admitted into evidence. Everett asked Cappleman about the purpose of the evidence. She replied that it was "part of the motive to erase the father' from the lives of Wendi Adelson and Dan Markel's sons. Everett asked whether there were any communications or other evidence that would show a connection between mother and daughter as it pertains to the name change. Cappleman said there are communications between Donna and Wendi Adelson about their last names before the name change occurred. Everett asked Cappleman to provide a copy of the communication.
