Notre Dame head coach Marcus Freeman recalls that time Cam Heyward knocked out his teeth
It was a cold 36-degree fall day in Columbus on Nov. 27, 2010. The Ohio State Buckeyes were up by 10 over the Michigan Wolverines in "The Big Game."
Marcus Freeman, now one of the highest-paid head coaches in college football (Notre Dame), was a graduate assistant coaching defensive lineman for his former Buckeyes team. Cam Heyward was a beast of a tackle and had made a bruising tackle on Michigan quarterback Denard Robinson on his way to six tackles on the day.
After the play, which forced an incompletion and turnover on downs, 320-pound Heyward blasted off the field to chest bump his coach. And somehow, post-congratulatory gesture, Freeman ended up with fewer teeth than when it started.
Freeman had a good laugh, recalling the split-second moment with Coffee & Sports host Dee Chambers.
"I don't know if I had a concussion or something," Freeman said, having not remembered exactly what happened at the time. "I remember the first thing coach [Jim Tressel] said to me was, 'Hey, I don't care about your teeth, you gotta keep coaching."
In a separate 2024 interview on Tressel's "It's All About the Team" podcast, Freeman explained how he stumbled backward, realizing he lost a tooth and chipped another, and crawled around on the field looking for it.
"It's a funny joke that me and Cam have. But I had to replace 'em, get 'em fixed," Freeman told Chambers.
Heyward never did reimburse him for the dental bill, but the Buckeyes clobbered the Wolverines 37-7 that day. And I guess that's all that matters.

Trailer for 'College Football 26' released, with game to include real-life coaches
After a successful first relaunch in 2024, the newest installation of EA Sports' "College Football" video game series will be back in full force this summer with some tweaks and changes. The trailer for "College Football 26" was released on Thursday, displaying some of the changes EA Sports made to the game following "College Football 25." Arguably, the biggest change in the game is that real coaches will be involved for the first time ever in the series. Over 300 current college football coaches, including assistants, lent their likeness for EA Sports to use in "College Football 26," according to a release. The release didn't share all of the coaches who agreed to be a part of "College Football 26." However, Notre Dame's Marcus Freeman, Ohio State's Ryan Day and Texas' Steve Sarkisian were seen in the trailer, while Penn State's James Franklin, Oregon's Dan Lanning and Georgia's Kirby Smart were among those named in the release. For the second straight year, thousands of players have agreed to lend their likeness for the "College Football" video game series. There will be over 2,800 new plays and "unique schemes" added to "College Football 26" from last year's game. The Wear and Tear feature also underwent changes, allowing users to "manage fatigue strategically and save your favorite playmakers for key moments with Dynamic Substitutions that allow you to rotate players in and out on the fly." In terms of game atmosphere, EA Sports also enhanced the Stadium Pulse feature for "College Football 26." In the newest edition of the game, there will be a more intense camera shake, new heads-up display visuals and a clock distortion that will force users to the high pressure of playing on the road at a hostile environment. Rivalry games, the College Football Playoff and high-stakes matchups will also be more impacted by Stadium Pulse. Other game features include the return of the Trophy Room (which shows all the trophies and accomplishments a user has won while playing the game) and Cross-Play across Xbox Series X|S and PlayStation 5 in Dynasty Mode. Ohio State wide receiver Jeremiah Smith and Alabama wide receiver Ryan Williams were named as the cover athletes for the standard version of "College Football 26" on Tuesday. The deluxe version of the video game includes a few more star players (such as Clemson quarterback Cade Klubnik and LSU quarterback Garrett Nussmeier), coaches (such as Day and Smart), legends (Reggie Bush, Tim Tebow, Denard Robinson) and mascots, along with Smith and Williams. "College Football 26" will be available for purchase on PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X|S on July 10. The game can also be preordered now through the EA Sports MVP bundle, which includes the deluxe versions of "College Football 26" and "Madden 26," granting three-day early access to both games. The Ohio State Buckeyes will get a head start on the 2027 recruiting class this month, particularly at tight end. Advertisement Four-star tight end Brock Williams told On3 last week that he will visit Columbus, Ohio during the first week of June. "Four-star Libertyville (Ill.) tight end Brock Williams tells Lettermen Row that he plans to visit Ohio State from June 6-7," wrote On3's Mick Walker. "Williams will be on campus the same time as four-star Huntington Beach (Calif.) quarterback and Buckeye commit Brady Edmunds. "The two have been in frequent communication over the past few months." Ohio State made its offer to the 2027 tight end prospect in January. Ohio State Buckeyes football head coach Ryan Day© Adam Cairns/Columbus Dispatch / USA TODAY NETWORK via Imagn Images On3 ranked Williams as the No. 1 tight end in the 2027 recruiting class. According to other rankings, Williams is the No. 2 tight end in the class. Advertisement Based on the 247Sports composite rankings, Williams is the No. 2 tight end but a five-star prospect. As expected because he's a highly regarded recruit, Williams has received dozens of offers according to 247Sports. But the Buckeyes may be an early favorite for the top tight end. Williams told On3 his first visit at Ohio State in March went "amazing." 'The thing that stood out the most, how I was treated and how many of the recruits were treated. All around an amazing visit," said Williams. Standing at 6-foot-5 and 210 pounds, Williams will play his final two high school seasons for Libertyville in Illinois. The top-rated tight end also plays defense for his high school team. Notre Dame wide receiver target Brian Williams Jr. getting rave reviews from trainer
Notre Dame wide receiver target Brian Williams Jr. getting rave reviews from trainer Highly touted wide receiver Brian Williams Jr. is impressing a lot of schools, including Notre Dame, this offseason. Class of 2026 wide receiver Brian Williams Jr. has been turning heads since the beginning of the year, and it's no surprise to his trainer Kevin Wheeler. The Notre Dame target has been working out with the founder of HD Performance, and the Florida native's drive and determination have stood out. "He loves the position, he loves learning, he loves football and he's getting better," Wheeler said. "I've seen his consistency and his discipline and commitment to continue to work on his craft and get better as far as route-running, releases, learning coverages, and just learning all the nuances of playing the position. So that's what separates him from a lot of guys." The 6-foot-4, 185-pound Lake Mary High School (Lake Mary, FL) three-star product (No. 756 overall in the 247Sports Composite) shined in February's Under Armour Regional in Orlando, and then a ton of offers from major programs such as Notre Dame, Florida, Florida State, Alabama and Auburn followed. Williams Jr. has already taken an official visit to Penn State and was at Florida this weekend. He will visit Alabama next weekend and Kentucky after that before an official visit to Notre Dame on June 20 with hopes that he will be joining his current teammate and Irish quarterback commit Noah Grubbs sometime soon. "He continues to grow and grow and grow," Wheeler said. "Like I said, his ceiling is just untapped. He could be very, very special. He's a special guy. He could be very, very good."
