Thousands gather to witness jumbo feast at Vadakkumnathan temple
The ritual began by offering the first 'urula' (ball of rice) to Poothrukovil Savitri, a female elephant, symbolically initiating the feast.
The Ashtadravya Maha Ganapathi Homam and Aanayoottu were performed under the leadership of the temple Tantri Brahmashri Puliyanur Sankaranarayanan Namboothirippad as an annual offering for the blessings of Ganesh and the well-being of all devotees.
Elephants venerated
This year also featured Gajapuja, a ceremony that takes place only once every four years, held under a special canopy where elephants, draped in yellow silks, were venerated.
The ganapathi homam was performed near the Simhodara deity within the temple complex, while the Aanayoottu took place near the southern gopuram.
This year, the highlight of the Aanayoottu was the presence of female elephants, who captivated the crowd with their gentle grace. Around 60 elephants participated in the ritual, including seven brought in from the Guruvayur Devaswom.
Ayurvedic mix
As part of the offering, the elephants were fed large rice balls, which contained a carefully prepared Ayurvedic mix in it. The feast also included sugarcane, watermelon, jackfruit, bananas, and cucumber, specially selected for the well-being of the animals.
The homam prasadam was prepared using an impressive array of ingredients, including 12,008 coconuts, 2,500 kg of jaggery, 200 kg of ghee, 1,000 kg of flattened rice, 100 kg of puffed rice, honey, and Ganapathi lemons, making it one of the most grand and spiritually charged offerings of the season.
The Vadakkunnathan temple Aanayoottu is more than a visual spectacle—it is a blend of devotion, tradition, and reverence for elephants.

Agartala: After Kerala, Tamil Nadu and Odisha, a rural school of Sabroom in South Tripura has adopted the innovative U-shaped classrooms influenced by the casting of last year's Malayalam film Sthanarthi Sreekuttan. "We have been experimenting with the model for three days, as in a few sections, students' attendance is high and classroom space is not enough to accommodate everybody in U-shape. Therefore, we made little curves and adjustment to make all the students as frontbenchers and to remain in the eye-contact of the teachers," Debnath said. He underlined that it's a small step, yet innovative, effective and highly potential to shift towards imparting an inclusive and engaging education in the classroom. The primary goal of this new arrangement is to eliminate the age-old concept of 'backbenchers' and ensure equal participation and attention for all students. Under this layout, students are seated in a semi-circular formation around the teacher, allowing direct interaction and better visibility for everyone. This method fosters a more democratic and collaborative learning atmosphere, minimising physical and psychological distance between the teacher and students. According to both Malayalam and Arabic calendars, the death anniversary day falls on Sunday, which corresponds to Karthika and Muharram 24, the very day when the catastrophe struck. Underscoring the scale of the tragedy, many families are left with sole survivors who have to perform the rites for the rest of the departed family members. For instance, Punchirimattom native Abhijith, who lost his entire family in the landslide, will find the moments all the more poignant. He will be performing bali tharpan for five members of his family — father Subramanian (50), mother Babitha (45), sister Greeshma (25), elder brother Girijith (22) and grandmother Thayikuttty (84), all of whom were swept away by the landslide. "The tragedy left me completely alone. It's now my responsibility to perform bali for them. Like Abhijith, many others are left as the sole survivors in their families while hundreds more continue to mourn loved ones lost in the disaster. Kalathingal Noufal from Mundakkai, who lost 11 members of the family including his wife Sajna, their two children, his parents and his brother's family, said he would spend the day with children at an orphanage at Gudalur in Tamil Nadu. "I plan to spend time with the orphans there, share a meal with them and offer prayers later," he said. Sajna and children Mohammed Nihal and Isha are buried at the Puthumala burial ground. The landslide that tore through the twin villages of Chooralmala and Mundakkai on July 30, 2024, claimed 298 lives, including 32 people initially reported missing and later declared dead, and left hundreds of families homeless.
