Summer hockey training camp ends in Belpahar
Jharsuguda: The week-long summer hockey training camp, organised by District Hockey Association of Jharsuguda, concluded on Friday at Belpahar English Medium School playground. The camp, which saw the participation of 55 young boys and girls, aimed at nurturing budding hockey talent in the region.
The valedictory ceremony was graced by Brajabandhu Bhoi, Secretary of District Hockey Association and Additional District Magistrate of Jharsuguda. Addressing the gathering, Bhoi appreciated the enthusiasm of the young players and the efforts of the organisers in promoting hockey at the grassroots level.
As part of the event, 12 outstanding players were felicitated with hockey sticks sponsored by the State Bank of India, Jharsuguda. The presentation was a gesture to motivate young talent and support their sporting journey.
The camp was conducted under the supervision of coach Shakun Nayak and Physical Education Teacher of the host school Shanti Nayak.Their dedicated training helped the students improve basic skills and game techniques.
Belpahar English Medium School has been making its mark in hockey, having secured second place in the 2024 ICSE State-level Sub-Junior (U-14) Hockey Championship.With growing interest in hockey at the school and club levels, the district is witnessing a revival in the sport's popularity, offering hope for a stronger future in Odisha's hockey landscape.
Hockey Association of Odisha Vice President Jeeban Mohanty attended as Guest of Honour. Other dignitaries present were Kahnu Charan Pradhan, Secretary of School Managing Committee; Clement Ronald, Joint Secretary of District Sports Association; Jyoti Latt; and President Sanjay Kumar Mishra. The dignitaries highlighted the importance of discipline and regular practice in sports.

Ex-England Coach Gareth Southgate Receives Knighthood
Former England men's senior football manager Sir Gareth Southgate has received a knighthood at Windsor Castle for his services to football. After leading England to four major tournaments and overseeing two EURO Finals and a World Cup semifinal appearance, Southgate has been awarded a knighthood, having previously been made an OBE in 2019. The 53-year-old joined the team in 2016 after they had suffered an embarrassing defeat against Iceland in the Round of 16 at the 2016 Euros. Under his regime, England became one of the best defensive setups in the world, and although his 102-game tenure ended without a trophy, he will be remembered as one of the best managers in the country's history, with two Euro finals appearances and one semi-final appearance in the 2018 World Cup. "It's an amazing privilege. I have to say I am more emotional than I thought I would be, but it was an amazing experience for my whole family. The lovely thing is you get to meet amazing people who have done amazing things for the country. The prince is a huge supporter of the England team. We have been fortunate to share some amazing moments and some unfortunate ones as well," said Southgate to Sky Sports. Southgate also reflected on his tenure as the England head coach. "Not quite where we wanted to get to in the end, but still, it was a period of consistency in English football. The journey we went on with the fans and team, working with a special group of players and staff. Of course, the games are important, but the relationships you build are really special," he added. Southgate also has 57 caps and two goals for England as a player in a decade-long career from 1995-2004. He has also managed the England U-21 team from 2013 to 2016. He also had a lengthy club career playing for Crystal Palace (1988-95), Aston Villa (1995-2001) and Middlesbrough (2001-2006), making 503 appearances in all and scoring 26 goals.

Swimming training for children to prevent drowning incidents: Min
T'puram: To reduce the number of accidents occurring in reservoirs, state govt will provide swimming training to children, said minister for animal husbandry and dairy development J Chinchu Rani. She was inaugurating the district-level Junior/Sub-Junior Swimming Championship organized by district aquatic association in Kollam on Monday. "Swimming is one of the best ways to improve physical fitness and can also save lives. Providing training to children will help prevent drowning incidents, especially in areas near water bodies," the minister said. She also announced that the construction of the swimming pool at Lal Bahadur Stadium will resume soon. Alongside swimming, better infrastructure will be developed for other sports disciplines in the district. A cricket training facility has been established near Ashramam Maidan and 50 acres were acquired for a new cricket stadium in Kottarakkara under the leadership of the Kerala Cricket Association. A hockey stadium is also in the pipeline. The minister added that over 350 sportspersons from Kerala who excelled in international competitions such as the National Games, Olympics and Asian Games were provided govt jobs. District sports council president X Ernest presided over the event. District aquatic association president N Jayalal, secretary Azad Abdul Kalam, TIAC manager R Ratheesh Kumar and former international swimmer S Manamayil were among those present.
