Bhaichung Bhutia: Feel sorry for Khalid Jamil taking charge of India team in tough times

The Hindu4 days ago
Former India captain Bhaichung Bhutia feels 'sorry' for Khalid Jamil, who has taken charge of the national football team at a time when the sport is going through a difficult phase in the country and said the All India Football Federation (AIFF) preferred him because he is unlikely to make too many demands.
Jamil, who replaced Spaniard Manolo Marquez, became the first Indian in 13 years to be appointed as head coach of the senior national team. He signed a two-year contract, with an option to extend for another year.
AIFF confirms the appointment of Khalid Jamil as head coach of the Indian senior men's national football team on a two-year contract, with an option to extend for another year.
Jamil will work exclusively with the national team on a full-time basis.

'We have got two world-class coaches (Igor Stimac and Manolo Marquez) leaving … If these two coaches couldn't work with the federation, then you bring people who will listen and will do what the Federation says…,' Bhutia told PTI Videos after the Fidel Castro Centenary Football Cup's exhibition match.
'I think Jamil being a domestic coach fits into that, as he is fairly new to the team. I (feel) sorry for him as well, as he is taking charge of the team when it's in a very difficult situation,' he added.
Jamil was chosen ahead of Stephen Constantine and Stefan Tarkovic.
Taking aim at AIFF president Kalyan Chaubey, Bhutia said, 'For Kalyan, he (Jamil) is the right guy because Indian coaches do not demand much.

At the same time, he is saying that there are financial problems, and today the federation has gone into such a bad situation that we don't have money to pay the coaches as well.
Chaubey had recently admitted that club football is 'going through a crisis' due to the uncertainty surrounding the Indian Super League, while attributing the situation to 'some self-claimed reformers with vested interests'.
Indian football in a mess
Bhutia also raised concerns over the federation's handling of administrative matters.
'When the Supreme Court appointed the ad-hoc committee to run the Federation for the U-17 Women's World Cup, the Federation should have asked the SC whether we can run it, or we should have a new body.
'That delay of three years clashed with the MRA rights getting over. That timing could have been tackled much more before coming to this stage. They should have gone to the SC and asked. I have been saying this to find out whether this body can continue, which they did not do purposely,' Bhutia added.

India will take part in the CAFA Nations Cup 2025, starting on August 29 in Tajikistan and Uzbekistan.
'It's a great tournament and good for the Indian team as well, but as I said that (Indian) football is in a mess. You should have sat with the ISL, FSDL (Football Sports Development Limited) and the new coach and then taken the call,' Bhutia said.
'And when you start playing this tournament, and suddenly you are trying to play the Super Cup and ISL. Then how does that work? I think it's going to be a total mess.
'If tomorrow, ISL comes in and says we're gonna start playing, then you will not have some of the best players playing for the club,' he added.

Abhishek Sharma – The young left-hander has impressed as a fearless opener and is expected to keep his spot at the top of the order. Tilak Varma – A calm presence in the middle order, Tilak has shown maturity beyond his years and is almost certain to feature in the squad. Suryakumar Yadav (c) – India's T20 batting mainstay and captain, Suryakumar's explosive strokeplay makes him the team's biggest weapon. Shubman Gill – Likely to return as an opener, Gill's consistency and technique put him ahead of Yashasvi Jaiswal for the Asia Cup. Sanju Samson – The first-choice wicketkeeper, Samson's experience and recent form make him a key figure in India's batting line-up. Arshdeep Singh – The left-arm quick has become a dependable death-over specialist, making him a certain pick. Gautam Gambhir sets sights on rebranding India's T20 team ahead of Asia Cup: Report

India head coach Gautam Gambhir will shift his focus to the T20 format ahead of the Asia Cup 2025. Gambhir reportedly wants to rebrand the team with a modern and aggressive style. Indian head coach Gautam Gambhir will now reportedly focus on the T20 format as India get ready for the Asia Cup 2025, which is set to take place in September. Gambhir was busy with the Indian Test team for the past couple of months and is now said to have shifted his attention to the T20I side. According to the Times of India, Gambhir wants the Indian T20I team to play a more attacking brand of cricket, which they have often been criticised for in the past. The report claims that Gambhir wants to rebrand the team, keeping in mind the modern style of the game. He will also focus on getting results rather than the process. STORY CONTINUES BELOW THIS AD As per the report, one of his new approaches will not have any designated finisher and instead roles will be assigned depending on the skill set of each player. For example, Shivam Dube could be pushed up the order to take on bowlers if the openers give a strong start. More from First Cricket Babar Azam, Rizwan snubbed as Pakistan announce 17-member squad for Asia Cup 2025 'There's no room for getting comfortable. Roles are assigned as per skills, not batting numbers. He is comfortable with this facet of a modern-day T20 cricketer. Shivam Dube, for one, will always get preference since he can go up the order and blast the bowling if the openers get off to great starts. There are no designated finishers," the report read. With the ICC Champions Trophy win and a decent tour of England done, Gautam Gambhir now has a tough task in the coming white-ball games, including the Asia Cup. These matches will be the perfect practice before the T20 World Cup 2026. The pressure is high on Gambhir to do well because he was chosen as head coach mainly for his success in the shorter format in the IPL.

'India won two Test Matches where....': Former Indian Cricketer takes a dig at Jasprit Bumrah for..., his name is... New Delhi: Team India's star fast bowler Jasprit Bumrah appeared in only three Test matches on the recent England tour. He bowled brilliantly in Leeds, Lord's, and Manchester, but could not participate in Edgbaston and Oval due to workload management. Interestingly, despite his absence, India won both matches. Questions raised on workload management The strategy of constantly resting Bumrah is now under criticism. Former cricketer Sanjay Manjrekar believes that Indian cricket does not need to adapt to him. Rather, Bumrah should prepare himself according to his fitness and the demands of the game. Manjrekar's big statement In his column in Hindustan Times, Manjrekar wrote, 'This game always shows the mirror. India won the two Tests in which Bumrah did not play. No player is indispensable for the team. If he cannot play even two consecutive Tests, then it is not right to choose him as a frontline bowler.' Selectors need tough decisions Manjrekar also wrote that India won even without players like Virat Kohli, Rohit Sharma, Pujara, Mohammed Shami, and Bumrah. Therefore, selectors should take tough decisions and give priority to players who are fully fit and ready to contribute continuously. Need to improve fitness Manjrekar says that if Bumrah wants to remain in Indian Test cricket for a long time, he will have to improve his fitness. He said, 'A great player is one who can contribute something to the team even when he is not fully fit. Indian cricket does not need to adjust for Bumrah, but Bumrah himself will have to adjust.' Challenge ahead: Asia Cup Bumrah took 14 wickets in three Tests in the England series, which included two five-wicket hauls. Now everyone's eyes are on whether he will be included in the Asia Cup team or not. This tournament will be held in the United Arab Emirates next month.
