'Can't rely on a player who has crossed 40': Social media reacts as Chhetri excluded from Jamil's list for CAFA Cup

Sunil Chhetri's exclusion from new India coach Khalid Jamil's list of probables for the upcoming CAFA Nations Cup 2025 has led to divisive opinions. While some fans are supporting the decision, some are left surprised. Former India captain , as announced by new head coach Khalid Jamil on August 16, 2025. The tournament is set to take place in Tajikistan and Uzbekistan, starting August 29. No official reason was provided by the All India Football Federation (AIFF) for Chhetri's omission, and AIFF officials have directed queries to the head coach, who was unavailable for comment. STORY CONTINUES BELOW THIS AD Social media reacts on Chettri's exclusion Given the legendary stature he holds in Indian football, Sunil Chhetri being snubbed from the probables list has sparked varied reactions on social media. Some users are immensely disappointed with the new coach for not mentioning him in the list, whereas some welcomed the decision, calling it a start of a new era. Alongside Sunil Chhetri's absence, Brandon Fernandes is also missing from the India's probable squad. Brandon has been directly involved in a majority of India's goals over the past few years and has been one of the most creative midfielders in the setup. #IndianFootball — Ashish Negi (@7negiashish) August 16, 2025 More from Football With all due resoect to Sunil chetri and his immense contribution in indian football, i fully support the decision made by our coach khalid jamil. We have to build up the pool of 30 players who can thrive for next 5 years and an average players age should be 26. (1/n) — Pitam (@pitammaiti) August 16, 2025 Good decision but there is no proper striker in the squad who can replace him. Suhail is in the under 23 squad and David,Edmund have not been picked. — Anuj (@Anuj_utkala) August 16, 2025 STORY CONTINUES BELOW THIS AD No matter what, Sunil da had delivered for Indian football consistently for years n he should enjoy his retirement. Also CAFA matches are Friendlies. Somehow our men's football team have to find a goal scorer among themselves if they are passionate to qualify for Asian Cup. — Vegeta অসম 2.0 (@30Kaju04) August 16, 2025 No Sunil Chhetri in Khalid's plans, But Gurpreet Singh Sandhu and Akash Mishra return to the Indian football team camp! 🇮🇳👀 A 22-member squad has reported in Bengaluru for the senior men's national team camp under new head coach Khalid Jamil, as preparations begin. — (@sportsclaus) August 16, 2025 STORY CONTINUES BELOW THIS AD 💯 great decision. We can't always rely on a player who has already crossed 40. He gave his best to the Nation and everyone will be thankful to him. Now we want to create another great player like Sunil. — Harigovind (@Harijee_Here) August 16, 2025 No Sunil Chhetri in Khalid's plans, But Gurpreet Singh Sandhu and Akash Mishra return to the Indian football team camp! 🇮🇳👀 A 22-member squad has reported in Bengaluru for the senior men's national team camp under new head coach Khalid Jamil, as preparations begin. — (@sportsclaus) August 16, 2025 STORY CONTINUES BELOW THIS AD Chhetri, aged 41, had retired from international football in June 2024 after a match against Kuwait but returned in March 2025 at the request of former coach Manolo Marquez for the AFC Asian Cup qualifiers. He played four matches since his comeback, scoring once in a 3-0 win over the Maldives. India's recent performances, including a 0-0 draw against Bangladesh, a 0-1 loss to Hong Kong, and a 0-2 defeat to Thailand in a friendly, have put their 2027 Asian Cup qualification in jeopardy. It's unlikely his exclusion was due to poor form, as he scored 13 goals in 26 ISL appearances last season, and finished the season as league's second highest goal-scorer. Speculation surrounds whether Chhetri requested to be left out or was rested, as his club, Bengaluru FC, has not yet started pre-season training and recently suspended salaries for first-team players and staff due to uncertainties about the Indian Super League's future. STORY CONTINUES BELOW THIS AD India's schedule for the CAFA Nations Cup 2025 India are placed in Group B of the CAFA Nations Cup, and will face Tajikistan on August 29, Iran on September 1, and Afghanistan on September 4. The team has begun training in Bengaluru with 22 players, with the remaining 13 expected to join after their Durand Cup commitments. The AIFF has urged clubs to release players for this tournament.

Bhaichung Bhutia: Feel sorry for Khalid Jamil taking charge of India team in tough times

Former India captain Bhaichung Bhutia feels 'sorry' for Khalid Jamil, who has taken charge of the national football team at a time when the sport is going through a difficult phase in the country and said the All India Football Federation (AIFF) preferred him because he is unlikely to make too many demands. Jamil, who replaced Spaniard Manolo Marquez, became the first Indian in 13 years to be appointed as head coach of the senior national team. He signed a two-year contract, with an option to extend for another year. AIFF confirms the appointment of Khalid Jamil as head coach of the Indian senior men's national football team on a two-year contract, with an option to extend for another year. Jamil will work exclusively with the national team on a full-time basis. Details:… — Sportstar (@sportstarweb) August 13, 2025 'We have got two world-class coaches (Igor Stimac and Manolo Marquez) leaving … If these two coaches couldn't work with the federation, then you bring people who will listen and will do what the Federation says…,' Bhutia told PTI Videos after the Fidel Castro Centenary Football Cup's exhibition match. 'I think Jamil being a domestic coach fits into that, as he is fairly new to the team. I (feel) sorry for him as well, as he is taking charge of the team when it's in a very difficult situation,' he added. Jamil was chosen ahead of Stephen Constantine and Stefan Tarkovic. Taking aim at AIFF president Kalyan Chaubey, Bhutia said, 'For Kalyan, he (Jamil) is the right guy because Indian coaches do not demand much. RELATED: Khalid Jamil in charge of India men's football team till 2027, parts ways with Jamshedpur FC At the same time, he is saying that there are financial problems, and today the federation has gone into such a bad situation that we don't have money to pay the coaches as well. Chaubey had recently admitted that club football is 'going through a crisis' due to the uncertainty surrounding the Indian Super League, while attributing the situation to 'some self-claimed reformers with vested interests'. Indian football in a mess Bhutia also raised concerns over the federation's handling of administrative matters. 'When the Supreme Court appointed the ad-hoc committee to run the Federation for the U-17 Women's World Cup, the Federation should have asked the SC whether we can run it, or we should have a new body. 'That delay of three years clashed with the MRA rights getting over. That timing could have been tackled much more before coming to this stage. They should have gone to the SC and asked. I have been saying this to find out whether this body can continue, which they did not do purposely,' Bhutia added. Bhutia also raised concerns over the federation's handling of administrative matters at a time when India's top-flight in men's football remains suspended. | Photo Credit: PTI India will take part in the CAFA Nations Cup 2025, starting on August 29 in Tajikistan and Uzbekistan. 'It's a great tournament and good for the Indian team as well, but as I said that (Indian) football is in a mess. You should have sat with the ISL, FSDL (Football Sports Development Limited) and the new coach and then taken the call,' Bhutia said. 'And when you start playing this tournament, and suddenly you are trying to play the Super Cup and ISL. Then how does that work? I think it's going to be a total mess. 'If tomorrow, ISL comes in and says we're gonna start playing, then you will not have some of the best players playing for the club,' he added.
