Lady Raiders clinch postseason berth after perfect season
NICEVILLE, Fla. (WMBB) – The 20-0 Northwest Florida softball team has secured a playoff berth after finishing conference play with a perfect record.
At the start of the season, little was expected by the team following two straight years in which national title runs were cut short.
A roster dominated by freshmen was assembled, mixing up the previous year's rhythm. However, as the season progressed, the Lady Raiders found their momentum unchanged despite the new faces.
Currently, the Lady Raiders are riding a 38-game winning streak and have compiled a season record of 54 wins and two losses.
An undefeated record at home has been maintained, and the top spot in the Panhandle Conference was secured for the third consecutive year.
Sophomore pitcher Cailyn Heyl has been credited with leading the defense, recording 128 strikeouts across 56 games this season.
The Lady Raiders are now awaiting their opponent for the FCSAA Division I Championship Series, which is scheduled to begin Wednesday, May 7.

NBH's Bartlow named Florida Distance Athlete of the Year
PANAMA CITY, Fla. (WMBB) — A North Bay Haven Charter Academy graduate is closing the book on a historic high school running career, and starting a new chapter at the collegiate level. What began as a simple hobby for Maggie Bartlow transformed into a passion, and then into a college scholarship. Now, her legacy continues as she prepares to compete for Florida State University's cross-country and track programs this fall. 'I'm going to be honest, I was not expecting my high school career to turn out like this at all,' Bartlow said. Bartlow didn't always envision running at the next level. In fact, the idea of distance running once felt overwhelming. 'Distance running in particular can be very daunting,' she said. 'You're telling me I have to race three miles over grass and through mud, and I'm going to get all dirty and possibly throw up at the end. It's terrifying.' But with a passion for numbers and a drive to constantly improve her times, Bartlow became more than just comfortable with the sport, she became elite. In the fall of her senior year, Bartlow claimed Bay County's first-ever state championship in cross country. By spring, she set her sights on the track. 'My goal was the 3200,' she said. 'I wanted that 3200. The 1,600 has never been my strength, but I really, really wanted this 32.' She not only won gold in the 3,200-meter run but also earned silver in the 1,600. Her accomplishments caught the attention of MileSplit, which recently named her the Florida Girls Distance Athlete of the Year. 'I can't believe that people really think of me like that,' Bartlow said. 'The fact that I'm considered up here by other people, it's just like, oh my gosh, this is kind of unreal.' Before heading to Tallahassee, Bartlow will compete one final time as a high schooler at the Nike Nationals in Oregon. She hopes to make the Seminoles' A-team in her freshman year but said she wouldn't be where she is today without the people who've supported her along the way. 'Every person that experiences some sort of athletic success, they're going to have a family behind them or friends or teammates or coaches, teachers,' she said. 'For me, it's all of the above. I've had so many people come together and help pull me along this journey, and I would not be here if it weren't for them.' Bartlow leaves behind a legacy as perhaps the most decorated distance runner Bay County has ever produced, and she's just getting started. Copyright 2025 Nexstar Media, Inc. All rights reserved. Poplar Springs hosts 15th annual summer showdown
HOLMES COUNTY, Fla. (WMBB) — For two weeks each summer, rural Holmes County transforms into a hub for high school basketball as Poplar Springs hosts its annual Summer Showdown. Now in its 15th year, the tournament has become a staple of the off-season. The varsity boys portion of the event tipped off Monday and Tuesday, and wrapped up its final day of action on Thursday morning. The competition has featured teams from across the Florida Panhandle and Alabama's Wiregrass region, playing in round-robin matchups from sunup to sundown across both the new and old gymnasiums at Poplar Springs School. Twelve local teams from Walton, Calhoun, Jackson, Washington, and Holmes counties took part in the three-day event. Poplar Springs head boys basketball coach Jared Owen said the summer tournament provides a rare and valuable opportunity for programs to test themselves in unique conditions. 'Some teams you see on a regular basis, some teams you see just during the summer,' Owen said. 'So there's exciting opportunities and chances throughout. Then you get to see a lot of how your players respond to different teams and different disadvantages, like playing back-to-back. You don't do that during the season, but you do during the summer.' Week two of the summer basketball round-robin action will continue with the varsity girls basketball teams on June 9, 10, and 12. Copyright 2025 Nexstar Media, Inc. All rights reserved. News 13 awards Scholar Athletes of the Year
PANAMA CITY, Fla. (WMBB) — After another school year of honoring standout student-athletes across the Panhandle, WMBB News 13 has named its 2024-2025 Scholar Athletes of the Year. This year's Scholar Athletes of the Year are Gillian Peaden of North Bay Haven Charter Academy and Jackson Welch of Malone High School. As part of the annual honor, both Peaden and Welch received a $1,000 scholarship courtesy of the attorneys of Perry & Young P.A. and WMBB News 13. Both seniors were recognized not only for their excellence in sports but also for their academic achievements and leadership on campus. Peaden was a leader on North Bay Haven's girls weightlifting team, helping the Buccaneers become one of the top programs in the region. She finished her senior season as a state champion, capping off a decorated high school career. In the classroom, Peaden maintained high academic standards, earning admission to the University of Florida. However, she plans to begin her college journey locally at Gulf Coast State College while continuing to compete in weightlifting at the national level. 'There were times when I was supposed to work out and I just told Paille, 'Hey, I really need to study,'' Peaden said. 'I had gym third period and a test fourth period. I'd reschedule my workout, but my grades had to come first.' Welch, the valedictorian of Malone High School, has been a four-year starter on the Tigers boys basketball team and is regarded as one of the top three-point shooters in the Southeast. This fall, he'll join the Chipola College men's basketball program as a preferred walk-on. Welch said staying disciplined on both ends, academics and athletics, has always been his approach. 'A lot of times guys just want to focus on their sport,' Welch said. 'But to be a true scholar-athlete, you need to put equal time into your studies. It's just as important.'
