Of Course Marvel Boosts February, but We Hope for Breakouts Like ‘The Monkey'

Yahoo06-02-2025

Led by Marvel's 'Captain America: Brave New World' (Disney), February will continue the three-month trend of improved box office compared to the previous year. By the end of February, we might be 25 percent of 2024.
Nobody expects that to continue for the full year. If it did, grosses for U.S./Canada theaters would reach $11.5 billion. In 2018 we saw about $12 billion — at current ticket prices, that equates to $15 billion.

January rose 10 percent from last year, but more than two thirds of that gross came from holdovers. 'Den of Thieves 2: Pantera' (Lionsgate) was the best of a weak group with $33 million in January, but Universal's 'Dog Man' and Sony's One of Them Days' will each far exceed that total.
A total of around $550 million in February looks doable; last year was an abysmal $375 million. In the lead will be the new 'Captain America,' which is also the first Disney Marvel entry since 'Deadpool & Wolverine' last July. It could gross $175 million-$200 million in its first two weeks. By comparison, the most recent 'America' franchise release grossed $500 million adjusted.
That's a nice improvement over last year. But before Covid, February always grossed over $600 million — in many years, over $800 million (adjusted). In 2018, when 'Black Panther' debuted, it passed $1 billion unadjusted.
This entry starts a new series, with Anthony Mackie replacing Chris Evans in the lead (same title, different character). It is directed by Julius Onah, whose previous credits include the acclaimed 'Luce.' He's another indie director in the Marvel roster that includes Cate Shortland, Chloe Zhao, Nia DaCosta, Ryan Coogler.
Holdovers led by 'Dog Man' should provide a similar amount to the total. 'Paddington in Peru' (Sony), which opened in much of the world late last year ($93 million so far) looks like the other new release with the best chance to gross close to $50 million during the month. Both 'Paddington' and 'Captain America' open February 14, capturing both Valentine's Day and a four-day holiday weekend.
'The Monkey' (Neon), which opens February 21, is the wild card among the month's new films. Based on a Stephen King short story, it is directed by Osgood Perkins ('Longlegs').
Wide releases include 'Love Hurts' (Universal) and 'Heart Eyes' (Sony), both counterprogrammed against the February 7 Super Bowl; 'Unbreakable Boy' (Lionsgate) February 21; and 'The Last Breath' (Focus) February 28. These lower-budget originals aren't projected to break out, but one or more opening over $10 million would boost the month, build on the success of 'One of Them Days,' and drive interest in producing similar titles.

Nintendo scores a hit with Switch 2, but can it keep the streak alive?

Less than a week in, Nintendo's hot new Switch 2 handheld video game console is already breaking sales records—including ones set by its iconic predecessor. Starbucks just developed an ingenious way to add 15 grams of protein to almost any drink RIP to the almost future of computing: Apple just turned the iPad into a Mac 5 ways to rewire your brain for happiness Nintendo announced Wednesday that the Switch 2 has sold more than 3.5 million units around the globe, crowning it the fastest-selling Nintendo console of all time. Considering the massive success of the first Nintendo Switch and the longtime success of the Nintendo DS—the second-best-selling console of all time, just behind the PlayStation 2—that's an impressive distinction. 'Fans around the world are showing their enthusiasm for Nintendo Switch 2 as an upgraded way to play at home and on the go,' Nintendo chief operating officer Doug Bowser said. 'We are thankful for their response and happy to see the fun they are already having with Nintendo Switch 2, as they explore new features and games that bring friends and family together in new ways,' he added. For comparison, Nintendo moved 2.74 million units of the original Nintendo Switch the first time around, in 2017. Those were already impressive numbers at the time, with a month of Nintendo Switch sales passing 20% of the Wii U's sales across the odd hybrid console's entire lifespan. The first Nintendo Switch has sold more than 152 million units as of March of this year, putting it on track to eclipse the record of the Nintendo DS, which sits at 154 million units. The Switch 2 launched on June 5, following a preorder period that saw the consoles sell out online in a flash. Prior to the midnight release, gamers around the globe lined up outside Nintendo flagship stores and chain retailers, fittingly killing time playing games on their soon-to-be last-generation handhelds during the original Switch's waning hours. Nintendo's Switch 2 doesn't reinvent the wheel—but with the wheel still rolling so well, why would they? The Switch 2, which retails for $450, boasts a larger 1080-pixel screen, a beefier processor that can run more complex games, enhanced social features, and an improved software shop. (Switch fans know that the eShop update alone could justify an upgrade.) The new console launches with Mario Kart World, an open-world version of the cartoonish racing game that's defined Nintendo consoles since the Super Nintendo. While the Switch 2 might be a little tough to track down for a while, inventory woes won't hold a candle to Sony's rocky next-gen console launch in late 2020. Gamers hoping to snag a PlayStation 5 upon its debut often came up empty-handed as the global chip shortage and sky-high pandemic demand squeezed the console's supply. Sony only declared its supply chain woes officially over three years later. Nintendo is facing intense demand with the Switch 2, but these days Trump's tariffs were the company's main launch concern. The Japanese company pushed back preorder plans in April as it navigated challenges the trade war might pose to its global sales. This post originally appeared at to get the Fast Company newsletter:

‘Snow White' becomes Disney's worst-performing live-action remake in nearly 10 years

Disney's 'Snow White' reboot is leaving a legacy it certainly doesn't want, becoming the company's worst-performing wide-release live-action remake in almost 10 years. The 2025 remake of the original 1937 movie opened March 21 in the US and Canada, and has struggled, earning barely $200 million worldwide. The film's page on calls the movie 'officially a flop,' and says its $205.5 million earnings are 'miles behind its massive $410 million total cost,' including marketing, production, and other items. The site calls the film's disappointing performance 'a financial blow which few expected to be this severe, especially with the losses already estimated at over $115 million, per Collider.' 'Pete's Dragon,' a 2016 Disney remake of the 1977 film, came away with $143.7 million, $61.8 million less than 'Snow White.' The 'Snow White' remake was not without its controversies, which perhaps contributed to the film's poor reception. Over three years before the film's release, one A-list actor with dwarfism had Walt Disney Studios reframe how it portrayed the classic seven dwarfs characters. 'Game of Thrones' star Peter Dinklage called out the studio for even considering taking a stab at portraying magical dwarfs in the modern era. 5 Rachel Zegler reads a book on the set of 'Snow White,' from an Instagram post on March 20, 2025. Instagram/@rachelzelger Speaking on comedian Marc Maron's podcast in 2022, Dinklage stated, 'You're progressive in one way, but then you're still making that f—–g backwards story about seven dwarfs living in a cave together. What the f— are you doing, man?' Disney then addressed the complaint and said the company would take a 'different approach' to the seven dwarfs. Rachel Zegler, the film's lead actress, faced backlash on social media for comments she made that were critical of the 1937 version of 'Snow White.' 'I mean, you know, the original cartoon came out in 1937 and very evidently so,' Zegler said during Disney's D23 Expo in 2022. 'There's a big focus on her love story with a guy who literally stalks her. Weird! Weird. So we didn't do that this time.' 5 Gal Gadot and Rachel Zegler in a scene from the movie. ©Walt Disney Co./Courtesy Everett Collection 5 The seven dwarves from the 2025 movie. ©Walt Disney Co./Courtesy Everett Collection Due to the controversy over the dwarfs and Zegler's comments on the original movie, Disney announced in late 2023 it would delay the release for 'Snow White and The Seven Dwarfs' by a full year. It was originally slated to be released in March 2024. Zegler was also vocal about her anti-Israel views. In an August 2024 X post talking about the official trailer for 'Snow White,' the actress wrote, 'And always remember, free Palestine.' She also lashed out at people who voted for President Donald Trump, saying in an Instagram post, 'May Trump supporters and Trump voters and Trump himself never know peace,' adding, 'F— Donald Trump.' 5 Rachel Zegler, the film's lead actress, faced backlash on social media for comments she made that were critical of the 1937 version of 'Snow White.' ©Walt Disney Co./Courtesy Everett Collection She later apologized, saying in part that 'Hatred and anger have caused us to move further and further away from peace and understanding.' Disney also scaled back the Hollywood premiere event for 'Snow White.' Variety reported 'the studio won't be rolling out a robust red carpet like it usually does,' and that the dozens of media outlets customarily present wouldn't be. Instead, coverage consisted of house crew members and photographers. 5 Zegler was also vocal about her anti-Israel views. ©Walt Disney Co./Courtesy Everett Collection Fox News Digital reached out to Disney for comment on 'Snow White's' box office numbers, but did not immediately receive a response. Fox News' Gabriel Hays contributed to this report.
