How This Financial Influencer Finished Saving for Retirement at 31
Financial influencer Shang Saavedra shared in an Instagram post how she finished investing for retirement at 31 and explained that anyone can also be an investor if they understand a few key topics.

She said it took an understanding of just a handful of concepts to achieve her retirement goals.
Invest In What You Know and Love
Similar to the old adage of 'Write what you know,' this piece of advice focuses on starting with what you're familiar with and where your interests lie. Investor Peter Lynch popularized this philosophy that's rooted in your own intuition and familiar companies.
Saavedra said a Wall Street executive Janet Hanson went to her college class and yelled into a microphone, 'You already buy things you love. So why not invest in what you love?'
Find Out:
Learn How a Company Makes Money
'If you don't believe someone can make money… then don't invest in it,' she said.
She pointed out that this idea isn't always intuitive. She gave the example of rental car companies, which may make a lot of their money from selling cars.
Having this knowledge can help you make empowered financial decisions. And remember, every company has a business plan, so familiarize yourself with its ins and outs.
Understand the Difference Between a Bond and a Stock
A bond is debt, while a stock is ownership in a company's profits, Saavedra said. They represent two fundamentally different types of investments with stocks coming with the potential for higher growth but also greater risk. Bonds generally have more predictable returns with less risk.
This basic knowledge is very important, she said, because they are the two largest asset types you can invest in.
Read, Read and Read Some More
Saavedra spends 30 minutes reading various newspapers every day.
'All of the best investors I know read voraciously,' she said.
Warren Buffett spends 80% of his day reading, according to Inc., and he has suggested people read 500 pages a day to achieve similar success as him.
Know That No One Always Gets It Right
While investors can avoid making some big mistakes, Saavedra reminded followers that 'no one can predict the future.'
For instance, even seasoned investors could not have detailed the economic situation under President Donald Trump's administration. The hard part of investing is making decisions without having all the information.

Trump administration not eyeing equity in companies that are increasing US investment, WSJ reports
(Reuters) -The Trump administration is considering taking equity stakes in companies receiving funds from the 2022 CHIPS Act but has no plans to seek shares in bigger semiconductor firms that are increasing their U.S. investments, the Wall Street Journal reported on Thursday, citing a government official. The development follows comments made by U.S. Commerce Secretary Howard Lutnick, who on Tuesday said the government is continuing to work on the possibility of taking a 10% stake in troubled chipmaker Intel. However, the administration does not intend to take equity stakes in companies like TSMC, which are ramping up investment, the official told the Journal. Businesses not increasing their commitments may need to offer equity to the government in exchange for subsidies. "The Commerce Department is not looking to take equity from TSMC and Micron," the official told WSJ. TSMC executives have already had discussions about giving back their subsidies if the administration asks to become a shareholder, according to the report. The White House and TSMC did not immediately respond to Reuters' requests for comment. TSMC, which counts Nvidia and Apple as key clients, announced plans for a $100 billion investment in the United States during an event with President Donald Trump at the White House in March. This investment is in addition to $65 billion committed for three manufacturing facilities in the state of Arizona. The U.S. Commerce Department, which oversees the $52.7 billion CHIPS Act, formally known as the CHIPS and Science Act, late last year finalized subsidies of $6.6 billion for TSMC to produce semiconductors in the United States. Besides Intel, Micron, TSMC and Samsung were among the biggest recipients of CHIPS Act funding. In the past, the U.S. government has taken stakes in companies during periods of economic uncertainty to provide financial support and restore confidence. Sign in to access your portfolio

Implementation of strategic transformation underway following closing of CC Capital transaction Ceres products received regulatory approvals in 43 states plus the District of Columbia Ceres received AM Best Financial Strength Rating of B++ Arena reported $1.2 billion in new AUM and Programmatic Capital in Q2 NEW YORK, August 21, 2025--(BUSINESS WIRE)--The Westaim Corporation ("Westaim" or the "Company") (TSXV: WED) today announces its unaudited interim financial results for the quarter ended June 30, 2025. Westaim recorded a net loss attributable to controlling interests of $0.2 million ($0.01 diluted loss per share) for Q2 2025 compared to a net loss of $17.1 million ($0.80 diluted earnings per share) for Q2 2024. AUM and Programmatic Capital1 for the Asset Management segment grew by $1.2 billion during Q2 2025, inclusive of the previously announced $0.7 billion mandate entered into on April 1, 2025 and $0.5 billion of incremental mandates during Q2 2025 including $0.3 billion for the Insurance segment. "With our new corporate structure and our talented executive leadership team in place, Westaim is moving forward to implement our new strategic direction. As expected, Westaim's Q2 2025 was populated by substantial accounting activity, with significant one-time expenses and non-cash gains associated with the implementation of the new business strategy. Our leadership teams at Ceres Life and Arena are positioning their respective businesses to effectively and efficiently execute against Westaim's business strategy." said Cameron MacDonald, President and Chief Executive Officer of Westaim. "Notably, Ceres Life has secured necessary licenses, approvals, and received its AM Best Financial Strength Rating of B++. They will officially launch in the first week in September with their distribution partner, Advisors Excel. We were pleased that Arena reported $1.2 billion in new AUM and Programmatic Capital in Q2, commenced managing the Ceres Life investment portfolio, and is realigning its global offices and product offerings to align with our strategic focus. We are confident that the realignment work done to date positions the new Westaim to generate significant long-term value for our stakeholders." Chinh Chu, Executive Chairman of the Board for Westaim, added, "We are pleased that our strategic transformation is underway with a new, experienced executive leadership team at the helm. As discussed at our Annual General Meeting on June 12, 2025, all of us at CC Capital are fully committed and aligned to build Westaim into a high-quality business that in time will experience significant profitable growth." The net loss attributable to controlling interests includes severance expenses of $4.5 million, which are expected to produce estimated annualized run-rate savings of approximately $4.0 million. We have identified an additional $5.0 million of annualized run-rate savings opportunities related to the Asset Management segment that we plan to execute over the course of this fiscal year as we continue to streamline and re-focus the business to align with the Company's core strategic plans, bringing our total identified run-rate savings opportunities to $9.0 million per annum. We will continue to evaluate our business activities for additional operational efficiencies and run-rate savings for the Company over the next quarter as we reposition the Asset Management segment to focus more on scalable opportunities for the Insurance segment, its existing client base, and future third-party clients. At June 30, 2025, Westaim's consolidated shareholders' equity attributable to controlling interests was $686.4 million and the Company had 33,551,508 common shares ("Common Shares") outstanding. Book value per fully diluted share2 was $20.46 (C$27.88) at June 30, 2025, compared to $22.88 (C$32.90) at December 31, 2024. The net impact of the Strategic Transaction (as defined herein) was a reduction of $1.48 (C$2.08) to book value per fully diluted share. 1 AUM refers to the assets for which Arena Investors provides investment management, advisory or certain other investment-related services. Programmatic Capital includes callable capital to discretionary and non-discretionary separately managed accounts. AUM is generally based on the net asset value of the funds managed by Arena Investors plus any unfunded commitments. Arena Investors' calculation of AUM may differ from the calculations of other asset managers, and as a result, may not be comparable to similar measures presented by other asset managers. Arena Investors' calculations of AUM are not based on any definition set forth in the governing documents of the investment funds and are not calculated pursuant to any regulatory definitions. 2 The Company uses both IFRS and non-generally accepted accounting principles ("non-GAAP") measures to assess performance. Book value per fully diluted share is a non-GAAP measure. Book value per share is computed as adjusted book value divided by the adjusted number of Common Shares. See "Non-GAAP Financial Measure" and the reconciliation of such measure to the most comparable IFRS figure below. The Strategic Transaction with CC Capital On April 3, 2025, CC Capital Partners, LLC ("CC Capital") and the Company completed its previously announced transaction whereby an affiliate of CC Capital made a significant investment into the Company (the "Strategic Transaction") as described further in the Company's June 30, 2025 MD&A (as filed on SEDAR+ at Through April 2, 2025, the Company qualified as an investment entity under IFRS and used fair value as the key measure to monitor and evaluate its primary investments. As a result of the Strategic Transaction, the Company transformed from an investment entity into an operating entity and for all reporting periods after April 3, 2025, the financial statements of the Company will be reported on the basis of the Company being an operating entity. As a result of the Strategic Transaction and in accordance with IFRS, the Company now manages its operations and reports its financial results in two operating business segments: Asset Management and Insurance. Other activity for the Company outside of these two operating segments is reporting in the Corporate column of our segment reporting. The Insurance segment is not expected to generate material earnings outside of investment returns on its current cash and portfolio of investments until the annuity business increases in scale. We now have product regulatory approvals in 43 states plus the District of Columbia, enabling a broad launch of our new MYGA product with Advisors Excel which we expect to commence in September 2025. The business believes that the technology and processes underpinning their operations will be able to scale efficiently relative to its peer group, and this operating leverage capability should become more evident as the business scales. Asset Management The Asset Management segment, which primarily operates through Arena Investors Group Holdings, LLC and its subsidiaries and affiliates ("Arena"), had Adjusted EBITDA loss of $6.3 million from the closing of the Strategic Transaction through June 30, 2025, inclusive of the $2.4 million reversal of incentive fees and performance allocations and $1.0 million of non-recurring professional fees related to the Strategic Transaction. Fee-paying AUM was $2.7 billion at June 30, 2025 (including $0.3 billion from the Insurance segment), compared to $2.4 billion at December 31, 2024. Corporate and Other Investments Activity While Corporate is not considered a separate operating segment of the Company, the Corporate column of our segment reporting comprises activities of the Company that reside outside of our two operating business segments and includes the investments within the Arena FINCOs, other cash and investments that are held outside of our operating segments, compensation (including share-based compensation) for employees and directors of the company that are not included in our operating segments, and other corporate overhead expenses. Corporate had Adjusted EBITDA gain of $15.8 million, which was driven by a gain on the restructuring of the AIGH investment of $29.0 million and interest income of $3.0 million, offset by losses on Arena FINCO related investments (including related expenses) of $8.1 million, professional fees of $1.3 million, foreign exchange losses largely related to share-based compensation accruals of $0.8 million, non-recurring severance-related expenses of $4.5 million and other operating expenses of $1.5 million. This press release should be read in conjunction with Westaim's unaudited interim consolidated financial statements (the "Financial Statements") and management's discussion and analysis for the three and six months ended June 30, 2025 and 2024 (the "MD&A") which were filed on SEDAR+ at These documents and the Company's Q2 2025 Investor Presentation can be found on the Company's website at Non-GAAP Financial Measures Westaim reports its Financial Statements using GAAP and accounting policies consistent with IFRS. Westaim uses both IFRS and non-GAAP measures to assess performance. The Company cautions readers about non-GAAP measures that do not have a standardized meaning under IFRS and are unlikely to be comparable to similar measures used by other companies. Readers are urged to review Section 15 Non-GAAP Measures in the MD&A (available on SEDAR+ at which is incorporated by reference into this news release and discloses historical figures for book value per share in respect to the three and six months ended June 30, 2025 as well as additional disclosures regarding this measure. Additionally, Adjusted EBITDA is a new non-GAAP measure that was introduced as a result of the company's previously announced strategic transaction with CC Capital that closed on April 3, 2023, as described more fully in Section 15 of the MD&A. For New York Liberty, success on court spreads spreads to balance sheet
Success for a sports team can be measured in a number of different ways, on the court, the rink, the field or the diamond … and on the balance sheet. But for the most part one follows the other rather than one being paramount to the other. At its simplest: You win, you win. Yes, you can win on the court but lose on the balance sheet, like the New Jersey Nets did in the early 2000s. Or can you lose on the field and win on the balance sheet, like a lot of New York teams have over the years. Ladies and gentleman, your New York … Jets. But as a matter of course, winning breeds winning. You don't choose one and not the other. Indeed, there's long been a rule in basketball: just get into the playoffs and you'll make your fans and other other stakeholders happy. According to an often-cited datapoint, each playoff home game can get your NBA team a million dollar profit. Post-season revenue-sharing is different with metrics adjusted to reward the winners. Not to mention every other metric, including goodwill as defined by season ticket sales, merchandise sales, etc … and of course the franchise and league valuations. Those in turn can used to do things like sell pieces of your club to carry out arena enhancements, training centers and other amenities attractive to the free agents … and fans There's probably no better example than the New York Liberty. Clara Wu Tsai, co-governor the Libs, has said the team is close to being profitable but those numbers are not available. What is known, as Tom Friend of Sports Business Journal wrote earlier this month. In less than 24 hours after their title, the Liberty shattered the WNBA's previous all-time 30-day record for championship merch sales. It wasn't just Liberty Mutual signing on for 2025:It was Pinterest, Fanatics, Amtrak, Essie, New York Lottery, Lola and Flamingo, amongothers. It was increased local media rights deals with Fox 5 and My 9, putting the team in7.5 million New York-area homes. It was sponsorship revenue climbing by 50% YOY. It wasticket sales in Barclays Center's upper bowl rising 68% YOY. It was overall social mediaengagement spiking 665%. It was e-commerce sales widening 58% YOY. It was in-arenamerch on non-game days climbing by 241% YOY, which means random fans were juststopping by. Which all started with the parade. Indeed, Friend notes that the Brooklyn Sports and Entertainment marketing team — known to not miss many beats —- used the championship parade down Manhattan's Canyon of Heroes to further ingrain the championship motif into the team. 'When we turned the corner at Canyon of the Heroes, it was like, 'Oh my gosh, this isabout the people,'' Keia Clarke, Liberty CEO, said Friend. 'I cannot one-to-one correlate that winning feeling as the reason we're averaging 16,000 fans this season, but make no mistake, there are people [at the parade] who said, 'I need to go to a game, or I need to watch when they're on TV, or I need to order something online, or I will follow them on social media, or I will take the time to learn a little bit about who [Breanna Stewart] is as a mom.' 'How we celebrated this team was important. The investments made in the parade, in rings, in the gratitude for the team and the staff and the partnerships that we have. It was very intentional.' SBJ looked at the big new sponsorship deal the Libs announced after the championship: a multiyear, multimillion dollar deal between the Liberty the WNBA team and Liberty Mutual, the insurance giant… Natural as the mating may have seemed for years to a lot of people, it didn't come to be until the basketball team got into the WNBA Finals in 2024 and the two sides met at a Finals game. 'I mean, it's kind of Captain Obvious,' Clarke told Friend. 'Liberty Mutual. We do share a name.' The success on the court also led not just to sponsorships and endorsements and TV deals etc. but an ability to sell a stake in the team — estimated in the 'mid-teens' per Bloomberg News — to a group of investors that included Jack Ma, the founder with Joe Tsai, of Alibaba, as well as five New York sportswomen that brought in roughly $40 million. That gave the Liberty a valuation of $450 million. That in turn is being used by BSE to finance around half the cost of the Liberty's new training center in Greenpoint, Brooklyn, a 75,000 square foot facility that's likely to be the WNBA's best and a lure for the next class of free agents that'll be need to keep New York's dynasty going. It opens in time for the 2027 season. 'The ember has burned from October to this year,' Clarke said. 'Everybody's come in with this mindset of, 'OK, let's do it again.'' At both ends.
