Trichy: Street name boards installed by Trichy corporation across wards are being exploited by private advertisers to display their posters, leaving the boards permanently mutilated.

While the local body recently sanctioned Rs1 crore to improve existing public signage boards and add new name boards in prominent areas, activists cautioned against making additional investment without regulating violations.
The expensive boards have come under rampant vandalism from advertisers of late. To attract passersby, they stick wall posters including for political events on these boards. "Visitors to residential areas are struggling to reach their destinations without help as the street name boards are defaced.
Public money is getting wasted, the corporation must penalise advertisers," H Ghouse Baig, Khajamalai-based activist said.
The sign boards made of stainless steel poles and reflective blue stickers are erected as part of road relaying projects sanctioned under Tamil Nadu Urban Road Infrastructure Fund (TURIF) scheme, smart cities mission fund, and corporation's general fund. Each of the 65 wards in five zones has between 20 and 122 prominent streets each.
While major roads have larger reflective sign boards, minor streets have smaller versions.
Erected at a cost of Rs12,000 to Rs30,000 each, the reflective blue signboards are written with the name of the road or street in white font in both Tamil and English.
Officials said the reflective stickers get permanently damaged while clearing the posters. In areas like Thennur and Crawford, the cleaning has rendered the signboards unusable.

"We have provided free boards in all zones for advertisers to stick posters, but a section of them intentionally target the street name boards. The commissioner has instructed us to identify and penalise the offenders," a junior engineer said.
Residents and activists are sceptical about the Rs1 crore sanctioned in the city corporation budget for improving signage boards meeting its intended purpose. "We will penalise the offenders without any partiality," a senior corporation official said.

China summons chip giant Nvidia over alleged security risks

Chinese authorities summoned Nvidia representatives on Thursday to discuss "serious security issues" over some of its artificial intelligence chips, as the U.S. tech giant finds itself entangled in trade tensions between Beijing and Washington. Nvidia is a world-leading producer of AI semiconductors, but the United States effectively restricts which chips it can export to China on national security grounds. A key issue has been Chinese access to the "H20", a less powerful version of Nvidia's AI processing units that the company developed specifically for export to China. The California-based firm said this month it would resume H20 sales to China after Washington pledged to remove licensing curbs that had halted exports. But the firm still faces obstacles. U.S. lawmakers have proposed plans to require Nvidia and other manufacturers of advanced AI chips to include built-in location tracking capabilities. And Beijing's top internet regulator said Thursday it had summoned Nvidia representatives to discuss recently discovered "serious security issues" involving the H20. The Cyberspace Administration of China said it had asked Nvidia to "explain the security risks of vulnerabilities and backdoors in its H20 chips sold to China and submit relevant supporting materials". The statement posted on social media noted that, according to US experts, location tracking and remote shutdown technologies for Nvidia chips "are already matured". The announcement marked the latest complication for Nvidia in selling its advanced products in the key Chinese market, where it is in increasingly fierce competition with homegrown technology firms. CEO Jensen Huang said during a closely watched visit to Beijing this month that his firm remained committed to serving local customers. Huang said he had been assured during talks with top Chinese officials during the trip that the country was "open and stable". "They want to know that Nvidia continues to invest here, that we are still doing our best to serve the market here," he said. Nvidia this month became the first company to hit $4 trillion in market value: a new milestone in Wall Street's bet that AI will transform the global economy. Jost Wubbeke of the Sinolytics consultancy told AFP the move by China to summon Nvidia was "not surprising in the sense that targeting individual U.S. companies has become a common tool in the context of US-China tensions". "What is surprising, however, is the timing," he noted, after the two countries agreed to further talks to extend their trade truce. "China's action may signal a shift toward a more assertive stance," Wubbeke said. Beijing is also aiming to reduce reliance on foreign tech by promoting Huawei's domestically developed 910C chip as an alternative to the H20, he added. "From that perspective, the US decision to allow renewed exports of the H20 to China could be seen as counterproductive, as it might tempt Chinese hyperscalers to revert to the H20, potentially undermining momentum behind the 910C and other domestic alternatives." New hurdles to Nvidia's operation in China come as the country's economy wavers, beset by a years-long property sector crisis and heightened trade headwinds under US President Donald Trump. Chinese President Xi Jinping has called for the country to enhance self-reliance in certain areas deemed vital for national security, including AI and semiconductors, as tensions with Washington mount. The country's firms have made great strides in recent years, with Huang praising their "super-fast" innovation during his visit to Beijing this month.

‘Allow WFH in Bangalore and Mumbai': Viral post slams time and energy lost to traffic, many echo sentiment

A social media post urging companies to allow work-from-home (WFH) in traffic-heavy cities like Bengaluru and Mumbai is going viral on X (formerly Twitter), striking a chord with thousands of professionals navigating long commutes daily. Several users echoed the sentiment, pointing out that modern work setups no longer require daily office visits.(Pexel) 'Companies should allow WFH in cities like Bangalore and Mumbai. If physical presence isn't needed, there's no point wasting time, energy, and money battling traffic and poor infrastructure. Half your energy is wasted just reaching office,' wrote the user, whose post has garnered wide attention and sparked a heated debate online. 'Yes. Physical presence, if required, should be once a month or so, not a few days a week. You're exhausting employees and they'll eventually quit for more flexible workplaces,' one user responded. Another noted, 'Majority of corporate meetings happen over Microsoft Teams, you talk to your US-based managers and even your Indian teammates online. So why make people commute only to attend virtual calls?' Mental and physical fatigue Other reactions also highlighted the mental and physical toll of urban commutes. 'It's not just the two hours lost in traffic, it's the mental exhaustion. Air quality is poor, and commuting drains people. At home, you can even take short naps and come back recharged,' someone pointed out. Many users also expressed frustration that remote jobs have become harder to find. 'It feels like there's an unofficial mandate for mandatory office presence. Remote work opportunities have dried up, and companies are not encouraging WFH like before,' said another. The viral post has reignited ongoing conversations about flexible work, urban infrastructure, and employee well-being in India's busiest metros.
