DJ Sumbody: Alleged hitmen and mastermind to appear in court
The four suspects aged between 45 and 60 were arrested on Monday, 21 July. DJ SUMBODY'S ALLEGED KILLERS TO APPEAR IN COURT
DJ Sumbody – who was an amapiano artist and the co-owner of popular Pretoria and Cape Town nightclubs, Ayepyep Lifestyle – was gunned down on 20 November 2022 in Woodmead, Johannesburg.
In May 2023, Sunday World reported that the Iyamemeza hitmaker's business partner, Kagiso Setsetse, had relocated to the United Arab Emirates because he feared for his life.
On Monday, South African Police Service (SAPS) national spokesperson brigadier Athlenda Mathe said the Gauteng organised crime detectives worked on the case and later roped in the SAPS Political Killings Task Team to assist.
The arrests were all effected in Gauteng on Monday afternoon and three of the suspects are believed to be hitmen and one is believed to have ordered the hit on DJ Sumbody.
The weapon allegedly used in the commission of the crime was seized and has since been linked to other murders as KwaZulu-Natal police commissioner Lieutenant-General Nhlanhla Mkhwanazi hinted during his explosive media briefing on 6 July.
Amongst the charges the four suspects are facing include murder and conspiracy to commit murder.
Meanwhile, national police commissioner general Fannie Masemola has welcomed the breakthrough saying it is significant and will hopefully provide closure to families involved.
'Well done to the teams that have been piecing together evidence since November 2022. This is a culmination of hard work and dedication to justice.
'This is one of those complex cases that our teams needed to take their time in ensuring a thorough investigation so that we could ultimately bring a strong case before court,' he said.

Groom gets life in prison for raping girl, 9, on his wedding night
The Limpopo High Court in Polokwane has sentenced a 45-year-old man to life imprisonment for raping a nine-year-old girl during his wedding celebration in Dennilton. The man, whose name is withheld to protect the victim's identity, committed the crime on 24 December 2023. After the wedding, the bride's family, including the victim, her mother, two aunts and younger sibling, slept in a room at the bride's home. In the early hours, the groom entered their room, carried the child to an unoccupied bedroom, and raped her. The victim screamed, prompting him to flee. Her mother found her naked and immediately alerted the police. The man pleaded not guilty, but State Advocate Shirley Mawasha presented a strong case, including DNA results. A J88 medical report and damning testimony from the groom's uncle, who said the man had admitted to sexually assaulting a child and showed remorse. The judge criticised the man for betraying the trust of both families and described his actions as 'fit for movies, not real life'. The court found that the man's arrogance and lack of remorse aggravated the situation. It stressed that he should have been with his bride on his wedding night, not preying on a child. The court sentenced him to life in prison, declared him unfit to own a firearm. His name was added to the National Register for Sexual Offenders, and barred from working with children. The National Prosecuting Authority said the sentence affirms the justice system's commitment to protecting vulnerable victims and deterring gender-based violence. AK-47 used in DJ Sumbody's murder linked to 3 more killings, including DJ Vintos
The South African Police Service (SAPS) has confirmed that the AK-47 used in the killing of popular musician DJ Sumbody has now been linked to three additional murders, including that of Soweto-based Hector 'DJ Vintos' Buthelezi. Businessman Katiso Molefe, former police officer Michael Pule Tau, Tiego Floyd Mabusela, and Musa Kekana appeared in the Alexander Magistrate's Court in Johannesburg on Tuesday morning. Three of the four men accused in the assassination of DJ Sumbody, whose real name was Oupa John Sefoka, now also face an additional charge related to the murder of Don Tindleni. All four are charged with DJ Vintos' murder. DJ Vintos was gunned down in March 2022 outside a nightclub in Orlando East, Soweto. Speaking outside the court, national police spokesperson Athlenda Mathe said the suspects were traveling in a BMW X3 at the time of the shooting. 'In relation to the Alexandra Magistrate's Court, the SAPS Political Killings Task Team, working closely with the Gauteng Organised Crime Unit, has brought two additional cases against the four accused who were previously arrested in connection with the Aman Sefoka (DJ Sumbody) case and the killings of his two bodyguards, Sibusiso Khumalo and Sandile Lemeza,' said Mathe. She said the firearm used, a single AK-47, has now been forensically linked to four murders. The murders included that of DJ Sumbody and his two bodyguards in November 2022, DJ Vintos in March 2022, Don Tindleni, killed in a BMW 5 Series on the N1 freeway in March 2023, and the Aman Sefoka case, as part of broader investigations 'What is significant is that one AK-47 has been definitively connected to all four murder scenes,' Mathe said. 'Beyond ballistic links, there is also overwhelming additional evidence that has been pieced together by our investigators.'
