Cantonment hosp in Prayagraj to set up separate ICU for Ayushman patients, Pink OPD for women

Time of India16-05-2025

Prayagraj: The Cantonment Board's General Hospital will set up a separate 10-bed ICU ward exclusively for
Ayushman Bharat
beneficiaries to ensure they receive timely and quality
critical care
. The facility will become operational from June 1.
This will ease ICU access and raise the total ICU beds in the hospital to 24.
The hospital administration faced frequent challenges admitting Ayushman patients into the existing ICU, which currently has 14 beds, due to a lack of availability. This often forced referrals to other hospitals, leading to inconvenience and delays in treatment for seriously ill patients.
According to the hospital authorities, the new ICU ward is equipped with oxygen supply and necessary infrastructure.
All beds will be under the supervision of specialist doctors. In addition to local physicians, specialists from Lucknow will monitor patients online, ensuring expert oversight round-the-clock.
Simultaneously, the hospital is gearing up to introduce a new initiative for women patients. Named 'Pink OPD', this will be an exclusive outpatient department located within the hospital premises and specifically designed to cater to women's healthcare needs.

Female patients will be provided expert medical consultation and treatment, with a special focus on maternal health. During pregnancy, women will be guided on how to maintain good health and manage related complications.
Currently, pregnant women receive limited services—mainly delivery-related—at the district women's hospital. For any other medical issues, they are referred to other govt hospitals like Colvin, Beli or Swaroop Rani Nehru, which often causes additional burden and distress.
The Pink OPD aims to fill this gap. It will offer services from specialists in MD medicine, urology and orthopaedics.
The Pink OPD will operate from 8am to 11am daily. A token system will be introduced to avoid long queues and ensure orderly service. Most preparations for the OPD are complete, and the facility is expected to start functioning by the end of this month.

Looking for the perfect perfume? Well, it's synthesized on your skin

Dr Abdul Ghafur, an infectious disease expert is swabbing skin and using genetic sequencing to analyse epidermal bacteria -- not for diagnosing diseases but to recommend personalized perfumes based on an individual's unique skin microbiome. "Understanding the skin's microbiome is revolutionising how we approach the choice of perfumes. It moves beyond simply picking a scent to a personalised, scientifically-backed approach that considers your unique body chemistry," Dr Ghafur said. In May, Dr Ghafur, who works at Apollo Hospitals in Teynampet, started Fragragenomics Biotech (P) Ltd to help people make the right perfume choices. He launched the company owing to his interest in perfumes, his knowledge of microbiomes, and his frustration with some of the world's most famous fragrances that failed on his body. "It was during my work on microbiomes during the pandemic that I found the reasons," he said. The skin is home to trillions of microorganisms, including bacteria and fungi, that comprise your skin microbiome. "When we think of microorganisms, we think they are all bad. That's not true. At least 99.99% of the bugs are either neutral or good for humans. Less than 0.001% cause diseases," he said. No two people have the same composition of skin microbes. by Taboola by Taboola Sponsored Links Sponsored Links Promoted Links Promoted Links You May Like Preparado para todo con hasta 10 años de garantía Nissan X-Trail Obtén ofertas Undo These microbes interact with compounds in the sweat, oils, and dead skin cells, metabolising them into volatile organic compounds. "These compounds, not sweat itself, create a unique, natural body odour. This scent fingerprint is influenced by genetics, diet, lifestyle, environment, and hormones. So everyone has a unique body odour," he said. Distilling the right perfume depends a lot on this. While sight or sound might dominate our conscious experience, scent often triggers far more vivid recollections. The olfactory pathways in the brain are fascinating neural routes that allow us to perceive and interpret smells. Unlike sight or hearing, the sense of smell takes a direct path to the brain, often bypassing the thalamus, which is a relay station for most other sensory information. Dr Ghafur's passion drove him to visit numerous perfumeries both in India and abroad. "Many perfumers were happy to discuss science," he said. The global perfume market was valued at about $50-55 billion in 2024. It's projected to touch an estimated $77-88 billion by 2032-2033, with a CAGR of about 5.3% to 5.9%. So, any scientific advancement that can attract more customers or bring in new ones is generally well-received. Customers perceive perfumes as much more than just a pleasant smell. They are seen as complex compositions that can influence emotions, shape perceptions, trigger memories, and serve as a subtle yet powerful extension of one's identity. "I don't feel shy to ask my patients or colleagues about the perfumes they use. Or I simply tell them the flavours in their perfume. Some think I am entering their personal space, but once I discuss science, they seem interested," he said. A common complaint is that a perfume didn't last as long as expected. Over the past few months, he has been testing and discussing what kind of bacteria produces a strong body odour and the kinds of scent profiles that will suit them. For instance, bacteria such as Corynebacterium, Staphylococcus epidermidis, and Propionibacterium acnes feed on the proteins, fats, and oils in the sweat, especially in armpits, groin, and feet. They break these down into smaller, smelly molecules. When the "good" or neutral bacteria such as Micrococcus or Lactobacillus are thriving, they can help maintain a healthy skin environment, possibly by producing acids that inhibit odour-causing bacteria, or simply by not producing strong offensive smells themselves. He offers his patients tips on the top notes – the flavours that last for up to ten minutes, the middle notes, the ones that last for about four hours, and the base notes that will last for hours to days. The skin microbiome metagenomic test, of course, is not for everyone. "We can't tell everyone to go for testing. But we want to make them aware of how some volatile organic compounds work. The result is no one buys perfume after smelling a sheet of paper or during the two-hour layover at an airport," he said. Dr Ghafur has made a presentation about skin microbiomes in people with diabetes – how a systemic environment can lead to a less healthy, less diverse skin microbiome, contributing to specific body odours. "Many doctors were interested. They called back too," he said.

U-Win vaccine portal a game changer for pregnant women, kids in Mysuru district

Mysuru: The launch of the U-Win online vaccine management portal by state health department has significantly improved access to vaccination and medicines for pregnant women and newborns in Mysuru district. Since its introduction in April 2024, over 16,000 pregnant women and 1.3 lakh children have benefited. The platform ensures a permanent digital record of vaccines and medicines administered to pregnant women, including children, streamlining immunisation healthcare services. It tracks each pregnant woman, newborn, child, and adolescent in real time, facilitating vaccination planning, beneficiary registration, and digital updates on vaccination status at the last mile of service delivery. All the 25 shots of vaccination from newborn to adolescent stage of the children, and two shots of vaccine administered for pregnant women are registered digitally under this platform. This platform is also designed to link with Ayushman Bharath Digital Mission. Census to identify persons with disabilities launched in Coimbatore district

Coimbatore: TN RIGHTS project, under the department of welfare for differently-abled persons, has launched a social registry enrolment (SRE) census to identify persons with disabilities (PwD) in Coimbatore. Under the initiative, data of persons with disabilities will be collected across all blocks, town panchayats, municipalities, and within the Coimbatore corporation limits in the district. Workers will visit every household to identify PwDs. P Sundareswaran, project officer for TN RIGHTS in Coimbatore district, said the survey began on June 2 and will continue till the end of August. "A total of 180 community rehabilitation workers are involved in the survey. They will visit every household and enter the details into a mobile application. During the survey, the workers will collect information, including socio-economic status, the kind of support the individual currently receives, any additional support is needed, and their expectations. After the survey, the data will be shared with the state govt," he said. "We have categorized disabilities into 21 types. The national average of persons with disabilities in the total population is 2.27%, whereas in Tamil Nadu, it is estimated to be 1.77%. by Taboola by Taboola Sponsored Links Sponsored Links Promoted Links Promoted Links You May Like Trading CFD dengan Teknologi dan Kecepatan Lebih Baik IC Markets Mendaftar Undo However, we suspect the actual percentage could be higher," he added. District differently-abled welfare officer Chandramohan said that after the eradication of polio, there is a growing number of people with intellectual disabilities, mental illness, and autism. "We don't have a comprehensive data on persons with intellectual disabilities. That's why we are now focusing on data collection. Without accurate data, we cannot plan appropriate schemes or provide proper rehabilitation services," he said. "The main aim of this survey is to determine how many people require rehabilitation. For those with mild disabilities, if proper rehabilitation is provided, there is an 80% chance of complete recovery. Without timely intervention, the condition can progress from mild to moderate and eventually become severe," he added.
