Online shopping worsening plastic waste problem
Published on: Thursday, August 21, 2025 Published on: Thu, Aug 21, 2025 By: Abbey Junior Text Size: Tahir said plastics are the other major component of the city's waste, making up close to a third of what DBKK collects. Kota Kinabalu: Sabah's mounting waste problem will not be solved by technology and policies alone unless there is a fundamental shift in public behaviour and better coordination among all stakeholders, says Universiti Malaysia Sabah (UMS) senior lecturer Mohammad Tahir Mapa. Tahir said studies by Kota Kinabalu City Hall (DBKK), including one in 2003, found that about half of all domestic waste in the city is organic — mostly food scraps, vegetables and fish. Advertisement Without proper composting, this material breaks down and releases methane gas, nitrogen oxides and carbon dioxide, all harmful greenhouse gases. 'If we don't compost, organic waste will decompose and release gases that damage the environment. Composting is the most effective way to deal with it,' he said, noting that methane is far more potent than carbon dioxide in trapping heat. Subscribe or LOG IN to access this article.
