Man United's Carabao Cup second round opponents revealed - as Ruben Amorim's men are forced to enter the tournament at this stage for the first time in 11 years

Manchester United's opponents for the second round of the Carabao Cup have been revealed. The Red Devils will enter the competition at this stage for the first time in 11 years after failing to secure European football. All Premier League teams who don't have continental assignments are made to enter at this juncture. The fixtures, which will be played on the week commencing August 25, were drawn on Wednesday night ahead of the remaining first round games. And United face a trip to a League Two outpost - the sort of tie which has caused them trouble in recent seasons. Ruben Amorim's men will travel to Grimsby Town, who qualified for the second round after beating Shrewsbury Town 3-1 on Tuesday night. More to follow.

Jack Wilshere, 33, REJECTS Arsenal's offer of Under-21s manager as he holds out for first permanent senior role

JACK WILSHERE has opted against returning to Arsenal as an academy coach as he looks to pursue a senior manager role. The 33-year-old was previously the Gunners' U18s boss – guiding them to the FA Youth Cup final back in April 2023 before joining Norwich as an assistant coach in October 2024. 2 2 After leaving the Canaries by mutual consent back in April – having briefly been interim boss – Wilshere has been on the hunt for his next job, eyeing another EFL club to get his management career up and running. Arsenal are currently looking for a new U21s coach after losing Mehmet Ali to Brentford's backroom team, and Wilshere was approached for a Hale End return. Wilshere's role would have involved the U21s as well as a wider remit in player development. But now, Arsenal are believed to be close to permanently appointing Max Porter – the 39-year-old has been at the academy since 2017 and has been in interim charge of the U21s. Wilshere remains highly regarded by the Arsenal academy, especially in his role developing Ethan Nwaneri and Myles Lewis-Skelly before becoming first-team stars, as well as 15-year-old Max Dowman. Mikel Arteta enjoyed having Wilshere at the club to bridge the gap between Hale End and the seniors, with the latter spending time training with the first team. Wilshere made 197 appearances for Arsenal as a player between 2008 and 2018 before spells at Bournemouth, West Ham and Danish side Aarhus. He is no stranger to the youth setup at Arsenal, having come through the academy at the club after joining at the age of nine. Arsenal's transfer deals IN Viktor Gyökeres - from Sporting Lisbon - £72m Noni Madueke - from Chelsea - £52m Martin Zubimendi - from Real Sociedad - £51m Christian Norgaard - from Brentford - £15m Cristhian Mosquera - from Valencia - £13m Kepa Arrizabalaga - from Chelsea - £5m TOTAL - £208m OUT Nuno Taveres - to Lazio - £4.4m Marquinhos - to Cruzeiro - £2.6m Jorginho - to Flamengo - free Kieran Tierney - to Celtic - free Takehiro Tomiyasu - released Thomas Partey - released TOTAL - £7m He was once touted as one of Europe's most promising young stars when he became Arsenal's youngest-ever league debutant at age 16. But injury issues hampered his career development and, despite significant showings in the Champions League for Arsenal and his inclusion in England 's 2014 World Cup squad, he became one of the game's biggest 'what-ifs'.

Promising Barnet academy star dies at 18 in serious crash as League Two club release heartbreaking statement

BARNET have revealed that youngster Arash Javanmardi has been tragically killed in a "serious" car crash. The club confirmed the heartbreaking news on Wednesday night as they paid tribute to the 18-year-old. 1 Javanmardi had been at Barnet for the past two years and was a top player in their academy. But he sadly died after failing to recover from injuries sustained in a car crash. A minute of applause will be held for Javanmardi on Saturday ahead of Barnet's League Two clash against Walsall. A club statement read: "It is with profound sadness that Barnet Football Club announces the passing of Academy player Arash 'AJ' Javanmardi. "At just 18 years of age, AJ was involved in a serious motor vehicle accident and was tragically unable to recover from his injuries. "A flamboyant and creative footballer who was talented with both feet, AJ had been on the Academy Football Education Programme for two years and was also part of the National League 'Champion of Champions' winning squad. "As a person, AJ was highly ambitious but also thoughtful, caring and considerate. He was a big character who put smiles on people's faces; a skilled jokester who knew how to enjoy life. "We will be holding a minutes applause in memory of AJ on the 18th minute of Saturday's game against Walsall FC. "Barnet FC players will also wear black armbands as a mark of respect. "The thoughts and prayers of everyone at Barnet Football Club are with AJ's family and friends. "We ask that everyone respects the privacy of AJ's family at this unimaginably difficult time." THIS IS A DEVELOPING STORY..
