Why Sam Bennett's goal in Florida's Game 1 win against Carolina had special meaning

Miami Herald21-05-2025
The Florida Panthers were already well on their way to a Game 1 win in the Eastern Conference final against the Carolina Hurricanes on Tuesday when Sam Bennett scored a third-period goal.
The strike came on a simple play, with Bennett rolling up high on the power play and firing a snap shot from the point to give Florida a three-goal lead in its eventual 5-2 win at the Lenovo Center.
But the goal also had special meaning for Bennett, who has been playing for a special cause this season.
At the start of the season, Bennett announced a partnership with the Humane Society of Broward County called 'Benny's Buddies.' Every time Bennett scores a goal this season, he is sponsoring the adoption a dog or cat at the humane society.
Tuesday also happened to be National Rescue Dog Day.
Bennett has now scored 33 goals this season — 25 in the regular season, a team-leading seven this playoffs and one for Team Canada in the 4 Nations Face-Off. That's 33 animals whose adoption fees have been paid.
'We've had so much success with Benny's Buddies this year and got tons of support,' Bennett said. 'It's growing a lot, and we're getting tons of traction, tons of cats and dogs have gotten adopted this year. I think there's even more to come with that program. Definitely really excited about it.'
Bennett and his fiancee Zoe adopted two pets — a dog Billie and a cat Gracie — from the humane society before starting 'Benny's Buddies.'
Later this postseason, Bennett will also be one of six NHL players to take part in the NHL's second-annual 'Stanley Pup,' a friendly competition featuring adoptable rescue dogs that will take place during Stanley Cup Final.
Similar to the Puppy Bowl for the Super Bowl, the Stanley Pup is a 90-minute television special in which dogs will face off in a competition showcasing their canine skills. This year, all 32 NHL teams will be represented by a four-legged friend, many of whom will be available for adoption from a shelter or rescue group in their respective city. The show will premiere at 7 p.m. June 6 and be broadcast on TruTV, with a rerun at 7 p.m. June 8 on the NHL Network.
In addition to Bennett, the Tampa Bay Lightning's Victor Hedman, Hurricanes' Jaccob Slavin, Utah Mammoth's Alexander Kerfoot, and Washington Capitals' Brandon Duhaime and Ryan Leonard will introduce participating dogs in support of local pet adoption in their cities.

Nets full Group Play schedule for 2025 NBA Cup released

The Brooklyn Nets head into the 2025-26 NBA season knowing who they will be playing in the preseason along with knowing that they will not be playing on days like Opening Night, for example. Brooklyn won't know their full schedule until Thursday when the NBA will release the entirety of the schedule, but they at least know what their 2025 Emirates NBA Cup slate looks like. The NBA released the schedule for the NBA Cup and the Nets now know when they will be playing all of their opponents within East Group B bracket. Brooklyn will be in the same group as the Detroit Pistons, Orlando Magic, Boston Celtics, and Philadelphia 76ers and will most likely have to win at least three of the four matchups if they want to advance to the single-elimination Knockout Rounds. According to the NBA, eight teams advance to the Knockout Rounds based on "the team with the best standing in Group Play games in each of the six groups and one 'wild card' team from each conference. The wild card will be the team from each conference with the best record in Group Play games that finished second in its group." At best, the Nets will have to finish with at least the second-best record in the group if they want to advance to the Knockout stage where they could compete for a chance for a prize pool. Last season, Brooklyn finished with a 1-3 record while playing in the same group as the 76ers and Magic while also having to face the New York Knicks and the Charlotte Hornets. The Nets could have a better shot of emerging from Group B with a winning record as the Celtics are expected to take a step back with the Achilles injury to superstar forward Jayson Tatum. More to the point, the Pistons, Magic, and 76ers were sixth or worse in the Eastern Conference even though Philadelphia should be a much better team as long as center Joel Embiid and forward Paul George are healthy. Celtics NBA Cup schedule announced, plus team's spot in Amazon Prime debut

The full NBA schedule will be released later this week, but we already have a handful of important dates for the Boston Celtics. It includes the first night the NBA will be featured on Amazon Prime, plus Boston's schedule for this year's NBA Cup. While the NBA Cup mostly induces eye rolls from hoop heads, it could be an important tournament for the Celtics this season. Boston won't be among the favorites to win another NBA Championship in 2025-26 due to Jayson Tatum's Achilles injury, so the NBA Cup could take on new meaning for Joe Mazzulla's team. It could serve as an early-season test for how the Tatum-less Celtics match up against three likely playoff teams. The Celtics will play in the Eastern Conference's Group B in the NBA Cup, where they'll match up with the Philadelphia 76ers, Orlando Magic, Brooklyn Nets, and Detroit Pistons. The Magic and the Pistons should be playoff teams again in 2025-26 after making great strides last season, while nobody ever knows what to expect out of the 76ers. The Nets are likely heading toward another season in the NBA lottery. Here is Boston's full NBA Cup schedule for the upcoming season: Oct. 31: Celtics at 76ers, 7pm (Amazon Prime) Nov. 7: Celtics at Magic, 7pm Nov. 21: Nets at Celtics, 7:30pm Nov. 26: Pistons at Celtics, 5pm (ESPN) Pistons at Celtics will be quite the Thanksgiving appetizer for fans, putting Jaylen Brown, Derrick White and company against Cade Cunningham and a rising Detroit team. Boston was 3-1 against the Pistons last season, but Detroit is coming off a 44-win season (marking a 30-win improvement from 2023-24) and its first trip to the playoffs five seasons. After each team plays each other in the group stage of the NBA Cup, the winners from each group and a wild card team from each conference will advance to the quarterfinals in December. The Celtics were 3-1 in group play last season but didn't advance due to tiebreakers. Boston lost to the Indiana Pacers in the quarterfinals two years ago in the tournament's inaugural season. The NBA Cup semifinals and championship game will be held in Las Vegas on Dec. 13 and 16, respectively. Before the NBA Cup tips off, the Celtics will be part of the NBA's first Friday night double header on Amazon Prime. The C's will be featured in the NBA's first-ever game on Amazon Prime when they visit the New York Knicks for a playoff rematch at Madison Square Garden on Oct. 24, the league announced Wednesday. New York sent Boston to an early offseason in the second round of the 2024-25 NBA playoffs, when the Knicks beat the Celtics in six games. The Knicks went on to lose to the Indiana Pacers in the Eastern Conference Finals, and replaced head coach Tom Thibodeau with Mike Brown in the offseason. Given the low expectations surrounding the Celtics, Boston isn't expected to be featured in many marquee games when the full NBA schedule is released. But a rematch with the Knicks to tip off the league's new partnership with Amazon Prime is a pretty big spot for the Celtics to be featured in. The Minnesota Timberwolves will take on the Los Angeles Lakers in the nightcap on Amazon Prime.

NBA experts agree: Bet the 'over' on Detroit Pistons win total for 2025-26

The Detroit Pistons won 44 games in the 2024-25 season, a 30-win improvement from the season before and enough to get them the No. 6 seed in the NBA's Eastern Conference playoffs. ESPN NBA insider Brian Windhorst thinks they'll exceed that mark in the 2025-26 season. In an episode of "The Hoop Collective" podcast released July 29, Windhorst and follow ESPN NBA reporters Tim Bontemps and Tim MacMahon reacted to projected win totals for East teams set on ESPN BET. When they got to the Pistons' over/under mark (45.5 wins), they were all in agreement the Pistons would reach at least 46. [ ] That would be the most wins for the Pistons since they went 59-23 in the 2007-08 season. That was the year the Pistons lost to eventual NBA champion Boston Celtics in the East finals. and the last season the Pistons advanced past the first round of the playoffs. If the Pistons were to reach the same round this year, it would mark a huge step up for an organization that lost a franchise-record 68 games in the 2023-24 season. Here are some highlights from the podcast episode: Windhorst betting on Jaden Ivey's 'continued growth' A big reason why Windhorst thinks the Pistons will exceed their win total from last year is the "continued growth" of fourth-year guard Jaden Ivey, who played in only 30 games in the 2024-25 season after suffering a fractured left fibula on Jan. 1 and missed the rest of the season. "Jaden Ivey was one of the more intersting players to watch in the Eastern Conference last year," Windhorst said. "He really was looking like he was going to ramp up and be kind of the player that they thought they were drafting high in the lottery." After finishing sixth in the Rookie of the Year voting in the 2022-23 season, then struggling in Year 2, Ivey set career-highs in points per game (17.6), rebounds per game (4.1) and effective field goal percentage (.536) in 2024-25 while putting up around five 3-point shots per game. "He's a guy that if he, you know, continues elevating, can really be a difference-making player, because that backcourt play could be big," Windhorst said. Ivey, 23, is eligbile for a contract extension before this season, the final year on his rookie deal. The Pistons selected Ivey fifth overall out of Purdue and signed him for $32.95 million on his four-year rookie deal. He makes $8.23 million in 2025-26. ROSTER NEED: Pistons still have glaring hole on roster. Here are 5 options to fill it Pistons trade: Positioned to acquire impact player Windhorst said the Pistons are in a position to get better during the season with a midseason addition, calling them "upwardly mobile." "They have a lot of flexibility and they have a lot of draft capital. They are a team that could go hunting for a mid-season upgrade." It's unclear who that player might be, though as our Pistons insider Omari Sankofa II has pointed out, the team still has a need for a backup forward. Outside Tobias Harris, who is on an expiring contract, the Pistons don't have a four or five who can stretch the defense. The Pistons have an open roster spot, the fourth-lowest payroll in the NBA, according to Spotrac, and are currently under the first apron — which gives them a lot of space to potentially add players as the season progresses.
