Danny Etling, a seventh-round pick in the 2018 NFL draft out of LSU by the New England Patriots who was last in the NFL with the Green Bay Packers in 2023 training camp, was suddenly thrust into the starting quarterback spot in place of MVP favorite Bryce Perkins (ankle), ruled out just before kickoff.
Etling played well for the Panthers (6-2, who lead the four-team USFL Conference), finding Devin Ross for a 35-yard heave down the right sideline midway the third quarter to give the Panthers a 21-12 lead after the 1-point conversion from Toa Taua.
Etling finished 14-for-22 passing with 167 yards and three touchdowns.
On the Roughnecks (3-5) ensuing possession, Keni-H Lovely then immediately made a diving interception on a botched quick receiver screen, got up and swerved 55 yards to the end zone to break open a 27-12 Panthers lead.
Etling hit Malik Turner on third-and-4 for a 5-yard touchdown late in the first quarter.

An 88-yard punt return by Xavier Malone down the right sideline early in the second quarter set up a 1-yard touchdown catch on the next play by Samson Nacua for a 14-3 lead.
The Panthers visit the Birmingham Stallions, who knocked them out in the playoffs last June, next Saturday, May 24 in Week 9, then host Houston at Ford Field in Detroit in Week 10 in the regular season finale.
The conference championship is June 8 and the UFL championship is June 14.

Williams scores 26, McBride hits 3-pointer with 30.8 seconds left as Lynx beat Liberty 86-80
MINNEAPOLIS -- Courtney Williams scored a season-high 26 points, Kayla McBride hit a deep 3-pointer with 30.8 seconds left and the Minnesota Lynx beat the defending WNBA champion New York Liberty 86-80 on Saturday. New York beat the Lynx 3-2 in the best-of-five 2024 WNBA Finals to win the franchise's first championship. Since then, Minnesota has won three straight against the Liberty. Minnesota (28-5) has won six in a row and 10 of 11 overall. DiJonnai Carrington won a jump ball against Natasha Cloud with 25.2 seconds left and the Liberty were forced to foul. McBride — who went into the game shooting 93.8% (75 of 80) from the line this season — hit two of four free throws before Jessica Shepard made two free throws to cap the scoring with 3.6 seconds left. McBride finished with 17 points and Jessica Shepard added 17 points and 10 rebounds for the Lynx. Alanna Smith finished with 14 points, seven rebounds and four blocks. Jonquel Jones led New York (21-13) with 17 points and Sabrina Ionescu had 13 points and 10 assists. Marine Johannès added 12 points and Kennedy Burke 11. The Lynx led 38-27 with two minutes left in the first half, but New York answered with a 16-0 run to close the second quarter and open the third. Jones capped the spurt with a three-point play about 1 1/2 minutes into the second half. Napheesa Collier (ankle) missed her fourth consecutive game for the Lynx. Collier, the frontrunner for the WNBA MVP, has missed seven games this season. Jonquel Jones missed five games in 2021, the most by any player to be named league MVP. Two-time WNBA MVP Breanna Stewart (knee) missed her 10th straight game for the Liberty. The teams play again Tuesday at the Barclays Center in New York. ___

49ers' Brock Purdy Gets Honest About Christian McCaffrey
Based on facts, either observed and verified firsthand by the reporter, or reported and verified from knowledgeable sources. Newsweek AI is in beta. Translations may contain inaccuracies—please refer to the original content. The 2024 campaign was a lost season for the San Francisco 49ers. Coming off a narrow, heartbreaking loss in Super Bowl LVIII, they were hoping to finally make good on their prolonged "Quest for Six," only to suffer a prolonged string of key injuries. As a result of those injuries, they went 6-11 and missed the playoffs. The one 49ers player who was perhaps hardest hit by the ravenous injury bug was running back Christian McCaffrey. He suffered a calf strain and Achilles injury during training camp that forced him to miss the first eight games of the schedule, and after returning for four games, he injured his PCL and had to be shut down for the remainder of the year. He is apparently healthy now as the start of the 2025 regular season approaches, and there is genuine reason to hope that he will be back to his prolific self once Week 1 arrives. Before the game, sign-up and receive an instant $200 bonus using the DraftKings promo more: 49ers HC Kyle Shanahan Offers Major Christian McCaffrey Injury Update Quarterback Brock Purdy said that McCaffrey is ready to hit the ground running again and is in a good place mentally. "Mentally he's just, he's on one," Purdy said on Thursday, per NBC Sports Bay Area. "Like he's ready to get after it with the season, and obviously from beginning to end, like play a whole season and go hard. And that's who he is." McCaffrey was recently ranked No. 73 on NFL Network's list of the top 100 players in the league. He fell hard on the list over the past year after being ranked No. 3 a year ago. Purdy said that the 29-year-old looks physically spry. "I mean obviously physically he looks great, getting in and out of cuts, running hard," Purdy said. "Back to the McCaffrey that we all know." In 2023, McCaffrey had an outstanding year. He posted 1,459 rushing yards and 14 rushing touchdowns, as well as 67 catches for 564 receiving yards and seven receiving touchdowns. He led the NFL in rushing yards and total yards from scrimmage, and he was tied with Miami Dolphins running back Raheem Mostert, a former member of the Niners, for the lead in total touchdowns. That production resulted in him winning the Offensive Player of the Year award and finishing third in the MVP balloting. Read more: 49ers Suffer Major Injury Blow to Key Offensive Starter Ahead of Week 1 McCaffrey has unfortunately been injury-prone over the years. But when he has been healthy, he has been arguably the game's best all-around tailback. In 2019, he became just the third player in NFL history to attain 1,000 receiving and rushing yards in the same season. He's San Francisco's biggest threat on offense, and his versatility makes the team's offense unpredictable and hard to handle for opponents. A return to form by McCaffrey could allow the Niners to surprise some people this year and become very competitive once again. For more on the 49ers and general NFL news, head over to Newsweek Sports.
