New to stream in July: ‘Washington Black,' ‘Heads of State,' ‘Sharkfest' and more
'Heads of State'
If there's an award for the most ridiculous but fun action movie, then 'Heads of State' is already a top contender. John Cena ('Suicide Squad') and Idris Elba (also 'Suicide Squad') play the President of the United States and the Prime Minister of Great Britain, respectively. Elba's character, a former commando, has little respect for and in common with Cena's action-star-turned-politician, but they have to work together after an aborted joint assassination attempt on Air Force One.
With a soundtrack that is apparently 87% Motley Crue and more guns than an East Texas wedding reception, the film is clearly leaning into self-parody territory of the action genre itself. That doesn't detract from the awesomeness in the slightest, though. Releasing on July 2 (marking the date in 1776 that Continental Congress voted for independence from Great Britain) is a nice touch.
Watch it: Action. Streaming on Prime Video starting Wednesday, July 2.
National Geographic 'Sharkfest'
Ever since National Geographic launched 'Sharkfest' in 2021, it's been the superior television celebration of the ocean's apex predator (sorry, 'Shark Week'). This year looks amazing, with a special starring documentarian Bertie Gregory diving with great white sharks without a cage, a retrospective of the film 'Jaws' at 50, and science educator Alanna Canaran's hunt for the sharks of the Northern Atlantic off the coast of Canada. The latter also explores Canaran's fear of the animals and her hope that by understanding them better she can turn phobia into wonder.
Watch it: Docuseries. Streaming on Disney+ starting July 5.
'Get Off My Lawn'
When you buy a house, it's not uncommon to find something weird left behind by the previous owner. In this case, a couple (Camila Banus and Tahj Mowry) must deal with a deranged teen named Alec obsessed with making sure they keep the house exactly as his late grandfather (who is buried in the backyard) wanted it. Jonah Hwang plays Alec with a terrifying suburban banality, making him the creepiest clean-cut monster since Terry O'Quinn in 'The Stepfather.' And you thought the HOA was tough to deal with.
'Washington Black'
An 11-year-old enslaved boy, born on a Barbados sugar plantation and gifted with a scientific mind, becomes a world-traveling adventurer. Based on the novel by Esi Edugyan, this miniseries a riveting story of perseverance and ingenuity as the young George Washington 'Wash' Black (Ernest Kingsley Jr. and Eddie Katanga as a child) seeks his fortune under the tutelage of an aspiring aeronaut (Tom Ellis).
Selwyn Seyfu Hinds, who penned the brilliant 'Replay' episode for Jordan Peele's reboot of 'The Twilight Zone,' serves as showrunner.
'My Melody and Kuromi'
In recent years, My Melody and Kuromi have become the faces of the Sanrio Hello Kitty brand. Now, they are together in an adorable stop-motion animated series from director Tomoki Misato (check out his excellent student short 'My Little Goat'). The sweet My Melody and sinister Kuromi run competing bakeries in town, leading to a rivalry until they stumble across an entire confectionary magical universe. It's not overly saccharine, though. The series also features some impressive looking car chases and other action pieces.
Watch it: Animated. Streaming on Netflix starting July 24.

One Labubu blind box, "Have a Seat," will be available to order, and two other blind boxes, the "Big into Energy Series" and "Exciting Macaron," will be available for pre-order. A blind box hides the exact content of the package until the customer opens it, sometimes revealing an especially rare item in a series. Is your Labubu real? A single box of the Have a Seat, Big into Energy Series or Exciting Macaron will cost $27.99, not including taxes or shipping and handling, according to the website. The Labubu keychains everyone is obsessed with are furry and come in different colors, shapes and sizes. Pop Mart has sold small Labubus, some shaped like shrimp tempura, carrying Coke products, dressed as pumpkins and more. Some people might say the doll looks a bit scary, while others think it's downright adorable. The doll was designed by Hong Kong artist Kasing Lung roughly a decade ago. Blind boxes can contain toys or figurines from different properties, from well-known characters like Hello Kitty and Winnie the Pooh and their friends, to popular manga characters like Monkey D. Luffy from "One Piece." Some of the blind boxes' contents may be rarer than others, which can increase their value and the amount collectors are willing to pay for them if they're resold online. Controversial ‘Family Feud' Episode Lands Host Steve Harvey and Game Show's Team in Hot Water
Fans of Family Feud are furious about a recent episode that featured an all-trans team who was raising money for sex workers, spurring plans to radically shake up the game show franchise, sources tell the National Enquirer. Insiders say the game show has been pushing the envelope for years, but this latest uproar has landed longtime host Steve Harvey in the hot seat. On the July 31 episode of Celebrity Family Feud, which airs on Disney-owned ABC, actress Laverne Cox led the all-transgender team featuring singer Mila Jam, actress Joslyn De Freece, actress and singer Peppermint and TV personality Ts Madison. They were playing to raise money for the latter's charity, the Ts Madison Starter House, per Daily Mail. 'The show has been under fire for years for pushing boundaries, but this is one of the most controversial scenarios they've had in a long time,' says an insider. Viewers' eyebrows shot up when jokes about 'free balling' and other crude innuendos peppered the dialogue, which kicked off when Steve asked Ts if he could call her Ts. 'Of course. Listen, I take it short or long,' Madison cooed suggestively. Harvey, 68, looked straight at the camera, feigning a look of shock. 'Steve Harvey, it's okay to free ball, we're free balling today,' Ts purred, alluding to men who don't wear underwear. Fans were quick to vent their anger on social media. 'Whatever individuals that 'green lighted' this show need to be fired. Another notch in Disney's decline,' one fumed. 'Well that's one show I won't be watching,' another chimed in. Show insiders agreed, griping, 'Being tacky and obnoxious to get ratings — it's blown the roof open.' 'Even Steve is getting caught in the crossfire and he's used to being the jovial guy who everyone likes, but not anymore. People are accusing him of pandering to the contestants, no matter how over the top and inappropriate they get,' says the insider. So now bosses are discussing the show's future, 'but there's a difference of opinion on how far the jokes should go and whether they should take a totally different route,' says the source. 'There's an inquest going on with people asking how it happened in the first place and what they're going to do going forward to avoid these catastrophes.' Adds the insider, 'The powers that be don't want to lose Steve, but they've got to clean up and do better!' Solve the daily Crossword
