Thousands bid farewell to beloved critic Sanoo Mash

bid a final adieu to M K Sanoo, one of the most celebrated socio-cultural figures in the state, on Sunday.
People from all walks of life, including dignitaries, visited several venues like 'Sandhya', Sanoo's residence, and Ernakulam Town Hall and later at Ravipuram public crematorium, to catch a final glimpse of their beloved Sanoo Mash.
The mortal remains were brought to 'Sandhya' at Karikkamuri in the city from the hospital around 8.45am. Water resources minister Roshy Augustine, CPM state secretariat member M Swaraj, district secretary S Satheesh, Dr C K Ramachandran, writer K L Mohana Varma and literary critic Professor M Thomas Mathew were among those who arrived at the house to pay their last respects.
Friends, colleagues and students gathered for a final farewell to their beloved teacher.
'Sandhya', which earlier witnessed many creative conversations and gatherings, was left with a sea of memories as Sanoo departed.
The body was later taken to Ernakulam Town Hall for the public to pay homage. Chief minister Pinarayi Vijayan reached the venue and paid his last tributes around 11.30am. District collector N S K Umesh laid the wreath on behalf of the state govt. Industries minister P Rajeeve, higher education minister R Bindu, agriculture minister P Prasad, AICC general secretary K C Venugopal, Hibi Eden, MP, BJP leaders K S Radhakrishnan and A N Radhakrishnan were among those who paid their last respects at Town Hall.

As his mortal remains were brought to Ravipuram public crematorium around 4.15pm, tears filled the eyes of those present and a gentle drizzle set the mood. Numerous prominent figures from political, social and cultural spheres came to pay their last respects. As family members tearfully bade goodbyes, many struggled to find words to comfort his children and relatives.
CPM general secretary M A Baby, CPM state secretary M V Govindan, minister Rajeeve, agriculture minister P Prasad, CPM state secretariat member C N Mohanan and Satheesh carried the body to the pyre. The funeral was conducted with full state honours. A guard of honour was given by the police.
His sons M S Ranjith and M S Haris, along with grandson Rohan, lit the pyre, as the mortal remains of the beloved teacher and mentor to thousands was consigned to flames.

Kochi: High court has sought details from the state govt regarding the methodology adopted for identifying families affected by the 2020 flood at Kuttanad in Alappuzha district. The court was considering a petition by Jaisappan Mathai of Kuttanad concerning relief for families affected by the 2020 flood and the delay on the part of the state in disbursing aid to 3,232 families. The petition stated that on Dec 10, 2021, the disaster management department additional chief secretary had issued an order directing that Rs 3,800 each be given to 43,538 families, but some of them had not received the amount even after two years. In May 2025, a bench of Chief Justice Nitin Jamdar and Justice Basant Balaji directed the state govt to place on record the govt order, notification, or circular issued pursuant to the decision for disbursing the amount, clearly laying down the methodology for identifying beneficiaries and distributing the compensation. The task cannot be left solely to the village officer and the panchayat-level committee without proper guidance or oversight. Accordingly, HC directed the collector to file a detailed affidavit in the matter. Subsequently, on July 31, the state govt sought additional time to file the affidavit, and the court directed that the affidavit be placed on record by Aug 14.

Farmers stage protest demanding compensation for land acquired for setting up Bharathiar University in Coimbatore

Photo by P Sreedhar COIMBATORE: COIMBATORE: Members of the Tamil Nadu Vivasayigal Sangam and the Communist Party of India (Marxist) staged a sit-in protest in front of the Coimbatore collectorate on Monday, demanding a compensation for agricultural land acquired by the state govt for establishing Bharathiar University. Land was acquired for the purpose from 1978 to 1984. The protest was led by CPM state secretary P Shanmugam and Coimbatore district secretary C Padmanabhan. Several affected farmers participated in the protest. According to the protesters, around 916 acres of land were acquired from nearly 600 farmers at the foothills of Marudhamalai to set up the university. However, the farmers alleged that they were not paid appropriate compensation and filed a petition in court. Subsequently, the court directed the govt to pay Rs 160 crore as compensation, but the order was not implemented. In 2022, the Madras high court enhanced the compensation to Rs 400 crore, including interest. Nearly three years later, the farmers are yet to receive the payment. Velu assured that a high-level meeting involving the minister for higher education and relevant department secretaries would be held soon to arrive at a permanent solution. He said the meeting date would be announced within two days. Based on this assurance, the protesters agreed to withdraw the agitation.
