Misiorowski rebounds after rough start as Brewers rally for win over Cubs
Sporting a 3-0 record with a 0.56 ERA in three starts at American Family Field since making his major league debut on June 12, Misiorowski had a forgettable first inning against the Chicago Cubs with first place on the line in the NL Central in front of a sellout home crowd.
After allowing a bloop single and walk to begin the game, Misiorowski took a line shot off the bat of Seiya Suzuki to his shin. The 23-year-old then struck out Pete Crow-Armstrong but threw a wild pitch in the process, allowing a run to score. Then, after fielding a dribbler in front of the mound, Misiorowski's knee buckled as he threw wildly to first as two runners scored.
Misiorowski threw 40 pitches in the inning, which ended when he struck out Nico Hoerner after a 10-pitch at-bat.
'It was a long inning and long innings suck,' Misiorowski said. 'Your legs start feeling a little loose and every pitch seems to be getting away just a little bit.'
After the troublesome first, Misiorowski settled down and retired 10 consecutive batters while throwing 40 pitches over the next three innings as the Brewers' offense erupted for four runs in the third to take a lead they wouldn't relinquish en route to an 8-4 victory.
'Just trust that the team is behind me and is going to help me out and they did,' Misiorowski said of his mindset after the first inning. 'I thought I did my job of getting us into a position to succeed.'
Clubhouse leader Christian Yelich offered encouragement for his young teammate.
'I told him it was my favorite start he's had in the big leagues,' Yelich said. 'This shows you a lot about what he's made of. You can get down on yourself big right there. That's how it's going to be in the big leagues. It can be messy sometimes. You've got to reach back and compete when that kind of stuff happens.'
Manager Pat Murphy said he learned a lot about Misiorowski by how he handled the adversity.
'We're down 3-0. He feels horrible. It's like a fighter getting knocked down in the first round and he had to regroup,' Murphy said. 'And that he did. It just goes to how you the kid can pitch, not just throw. He'll remember this outing and he's going to learn from it.'
Murphy said Misiorowski told him he was exhausted after the lengthy first inning.
'But he still gave us four (innings) and wanted to go out for a fifth,' Murphy said.
Misiorowski allowed three hits and three runs in four innings. He walked two and struck out seven while throwing 11 pitches of 100 mph or more.
The Brewers scored four runs off Matthew Boyd (11-4) in the third to take a 4-3 lead. Yelich had an RBI double, Isaac Collins a two-run single and Brice Turang a sacrifice fly.
Andrew Vaughn hit a solo homer in the fifth and Sal Frelick hit another in the sixth to give the Brewers a 6-3 lead. After the Cubs got a run in the seventh cut the margin to 6-4, Yelich hit a two-run shot to give the Brewers a four-run cushion.
'We just had to keep putting together good at-bats, just grinding, getting in there and making it messy,' Yelich said. 'Just chip away. We didn't have to get it all back right away.'

Ryne Sandberg, longtime Cubs star and Baseball Hall of Famer, dies after cancer battle
Longtime Chicago Cubs star and Hall of Famer Ryne Sandberg died Monday, the team announced. He was 65. Sandberg died due to complications with cancer, with which he was diagnosed twice in 2024. He revealed in January 2024 that he had been diagnosed with metastatic prostate cancer. Sandberg fended it off initially and about eight months later said he was cancer-free. In December, however, Sandberg announced that the cancer had spread to other organs in his body. That led him to undergo 'more intensive treatment.' "Ryne Sandberg was a legend of the Chicago Cubs franchise and a beloved figure throughout Major League Baseball," MLB commissioner Rob Manfred said in a statement. "He was a five-tool player who excelled in every facet of the game thanks to his power, speed and work ethic ... His many friends across the game were in his corner as he courageously fought cancer in recent years. We will continue to support the important work of Stand Up To Cancer in Ryne's memory. 'On behalf of Major League Baseball, I extend my deepest condolences to Ryne's family, Cubs fans everywhere and his admirers throughout our National Pastime.' Sandberg spent nearly all of his MLB career with the Cubs. After a 13-game stint with the Philadelphia Phillies in 1981, Sandberg spent the next 15 seasons with the Cubs before he retired after the 1997 campaign. He made 10 straight All-Star appearances starting in 1984, the year he won NL MVP honors while leading the league in triples and runs scored. Sandberg won seven Silver Slugger awards and nine Gold Gloves throughout his career. He led the NL with 40 home runs in the 1990 season, and that year, he won the Home Run Derby at Wrigley Field. Sandberg rarely missed time, too. He played in at least 115 games in all but one of his seasons with the Cubs, and he surpassed 150 games in all but four seasons. Sandberg was inducted into the Baseball Hall of Fame in 2005, and the Cubs retired his number that year. Last season, the Cubs unveiled a statue outside Wrigley Field honoring Sandberg. "Ryne Sandberg was a hero to a generation of Chicago Cubs fans and will be remembered as one of the all-time greats in nearly 150 years of this historic franchise," Cubs chairman Tom Ricketts said in a statement. "His dedication to and respect for the game, along with his unrelenting integrity, grit, hustle and competitive fire, were hallmarks of his career. He was immensely proud of his teammates and his role as a global ambassador of the game of baseball, but most of all, he was proud of Margaret, his children and his role as a husband, father and grandfather. Margaret and their children and grandchildren will always be a part of the Cubs family. 'Ryno' will never be forgotten by the Cubs community and baseball fans around the world." Sandberg, whom the Phillies took in the 20th round of the 1978 MLB Draft, grew up in Spokane, Washington. After his playing career ended, he spent time coaching with both the Cubs and Phillies organizations before he took over as Phillies manager in 2013. He spent three seasons with the team before resigning during the 2015 campaign. He finished with a 119-159 record as manager and completed only one full season. 'The Phillies family is devastated to learn of the passing of Ryne Sandberg," the team said in a statement. "He was an important part of our organization, not just as a player, but also as a coach and a manager. He made a lifelong impact on so many including those who had the privilege of knowing him and working with him. We extend our heartfelt sympathy to Margaret and Ryne's entire family during this difficult time."

Speedway Classic Set To Break MLB's Regular Season Single-Game Attendance Record
When the Atlanta Braves and Cincinnati Reds meet at Bristol Motor Speedway on Saturday, they'll be doing so in front of a record crowd. The MLB Speedway Classic will break the all-time single-game regular season attendance record as 85,000 tickets have already been sold, MLB announced Monday. The previous record was set in September 1954, when 84,587 fans watched a game between the New York Yankees and Cleveland at Cleveland Stadium as part of a doubleheader. As of Monday, fans from all 50 states, Washington D.C., Puerto Rico, the U.S. Virgin Islands and nine other countries had bought tickets to attend Saturday's game, according to MLB. Tickets are still on sale for the MLB Speedway Classic. For car races, Bristol Motor Speedway has a stadium capacity of 146,000. However, the racetrack hosted more fans than that (156,990) when Virginia Tech and Tennessee played a college football game there in 2016. The single-game attendance record for all MLB games is 115,300. That record was set when the Los Angeles Dodgers hosted the Boston Red Sox at Los Angeles Memorial Coliseum for a spring training game in 2008. Beyond the record being made in the crowd, Saturday's game will mark the first time an MLB game will be played in Tennessee. It's also the first MLB game that will ever be played on a racetrack. Both the Braves and Reds unveiled special uniforms that they'll wear for the game last week, with the location of the game serving as the inspiration for the theme of their looks. In addition, Reds catcher Tyler Stephenson will wear gear that's inspired by the hit movie, "Talladega Nights." The Reds will likely enter the series looking to continue their push for the playoffs. Cincinnati is one game out of the final wild card spot in the National League as of Monday. The Braves, meanwhile, have had a disappointing season and could be sellers ahead of the MLB trade deadline on Thursday. As for the pregame festivities, Hall of Famers who played for each team will throw the first pitch. Chipper Jones will represent the Braves, while Johnny Bench will represent the Reds. Saturday's game will air on FOX and the FOX Sports app, with first pitch being scheduled for 7:15 p.m. ET. Want great stories delivered right to your inbox?
