Shah, CM discuss issues of welfare, city's development
Chief minister Rekha Gupta on Tuesday met Union home minister Amit Shah and held what her office described as 'detailed and meaningful discussions on various public welfare and development issues related to the capital city.' CM Gupta also expressed gratitude to the home minister for his 'valuable guidance'.
Describing the meeting as 'cordial, constructive and highly meaningful', the chief minister's office said the conversation focused on key governance issues. 'The chief minister informed the home minister that Delhi is effectively reaping the benefits of a double-engine government. With continued support from the Centre, the promises made for the first 100 days have been fulfilled within the set timeline,' the statement said.
It added that the CM discussed her government's vision for a 'Developed Delhi' and acknowledged that central support was aiding that ambition. 'This cooperation is also serving as an inspiration for the state government,' the CM office noted.
The home minister's office posted photos of the meeting on X, following which Gupta thanked Shah in a public message. 'Today, I made a courtesy visit to the Hon'ble Union Minister of Home and Cooperation, Shri Amit Shah ji, and received his guidance. His vision and leadership in national service, organisation, and good governance are a source of inspiration to all public representatives. The discussion on Delhi's public interest issues was extremely thought-provoking, guiding and intimate. Heartfelt gratitude for his invaluable time and affection,' Gupta wrote on X.
Gupta also extended her best wishes on the completion of 11 years of the BJP-led central government. She said that 'under the leadership of Prime Minister Narendra Modi, India has strengthened its reputation at the global level and achieved remarkable progress in internal security, the cooperative movement, and the upliftment of the poor.'
She added that 'the experience, guidance and leadership of the central government are extremely essential for a highly sensitive metropolis like Delhi.'

CPM warns of ‘Emergency-like danger' to nation under Modi
VIJAYAWADA: CPM politburo member BV Raghavulu on Tuesday asserted that democracy and secularism in India face a threat greater than the Emergency period under Prime Minister Narendra Modi's rule, urging a united front to combat it. Speaking at a press conference at MB Vignana Kendram here, alongside politburo member U Vasuki and party State secretariat member Y Venkateswara Rao, Raghavulu outlined decisions made at a recent Central Committee meeting. He stated the party's resolve to inform the public about the true facts of the recent Pulwama terrorist attack and to explain the 'danger of Emergency-like conditions.' Raghavulu highlighted the need for public awareness regarding the recent terror attack in Pahalgam. He noted that while terrorists killed innocent civilians and India retaliated by destroying terrorist bases in Pakistan, President Donald Trump claimed he brokered a ceasefire between the two nations. The CPM demanded a special parliamentary session to reveal the facts, a request Raghavulu said the government refused. Raghavulu strongly criticised the Central government for allegedly aligning with American foreign policy and acting subserviently to Trump. He pointed out that the Indian government has not condemned the recent Israeli attack on Iran, despite India's friendly economic ties with Iran. He warned that a potential war would increase crude oil prices, already up by 10 per cent, harming India's economy. He stressed the need for global pressure on Israel to halt the conflict. Raghavulu accused the BJP-led Central government of supporting Israel and urged it to change its stance. He criticised the Indian government for attempting to equate the aggressors with the victims, suggesting its actions appear to cater to American interests and Trump's preferences. 'While claiming to be a 'Vishwaguru', it is acting as Trump's puppet,' he remarked. Raghavulu concluded by highlighting the upcoming 50th anniversary of the Emergency declaration on June 25, emphasising the need to inform the public about its dangers. He recalled the CPM's active role in fighting against the Emergency and how opposition parties united. He stated that just asthe nation was collectively saved from the Emergency then, today there is a need to protect secularism, democracy, and federalism from the 'danger of neo-fascist forces.'

NDA game plan for Bihar polls: Op Sindoor to caste census, joint campaigns to schemes
With Bihar headed to the Assembly elections in October-November this year, the ruling NDA allies, including the BJP and Chief Minister Nitish Kumar-led JD(U), have kicked off their campaigns at various levels, holding joint press conferences to send out a message of unity and highlight the 'accomplishments' of the 'double engine' NDA governments in the state and at the Centre. BJP sources said about 60 such press conferences have already been held in different districts across Bihar since this February. At the same time, the NDA allies have also held their coordination meetings at the district level. 'Unlike the INDI (Opposition INDIA or Mahagathbandhan) alliance, the NDA is united,' said a state BJP leader. 'Our seat-sharing talks have yet to begin, but our campaigns have already started unitedly. Our message is clear – this is a coherent alliance which instead of bickering aims to deliver results,' he said. 'Attempts have been made to ensure coordination between the two major NDA partners BJP and JD(U) from booths to districts. The Assembly-level coordination between the NDA parties would be done later (after the finalisation of their seat-sharing deal),' the BJP leader said. Bihar BJP spokesperson Sumit Shashank told The Indian Express, 'We are always ready for elections because we have done work for the state.' In their campaigning from the district level down to panchayats, the NDA leaders have been showcasing various central and state schemes for the development of Bihar and different sections of its people. Ayushman Bharat figures prominently in their campaign, with people being not just told about the scheme but also being helped to enrol in it. The Mukhya Mantri Mahila Udyami Yojana, which focuses on extending financial assistance to women wanting to establish various businesses, is also being highlighted. 'The Opposition says that bridges have collapsed in Bihar. We do not try to defend it. What we say is that bridges are being built, and any problems that come to our notice are being fixed,' said a BJP leader. Operation Sindoor has also figured significantly in the ruling camp's interactions with people, with the NDA leaders highlighting it as a milestone in securing national security and curbing terrorism emanating from Pakistan. The JD(U)'s national working president Sanjay Jha was the head of one of the seven multi-party delegations that was sent to multiple foreign countries to rally global support for India's Operation Sindoor. With the caste factor seen to dominate the Bihar polls for decades now, key INDIA players RJD and Congress have been trying to get an edge over the NDA along the caste faultlines. To checkmate the Opposition bloc, the NDA leaders have been claiming that 'Nitish was the first CM who got a caste survey conducted successfully in a state'. While the BJP was sceptical about the caste survey when its report was released on Gandhi Jayanti in 2023 (when Nitish was heading the Mahagathbandhan government), the point that the Centre has now notified the 2027 population Census along with caste enumeration, BJP sources say, 'provides coherence to the NDA's attempt to take ownership of it and counter the Opposition's attack over caste'. 'We have about 16 key Yadav faces. When the RJD talks about Yadavs, it means one family (Lalu Yadav's family). It is under the NDA that leaders from all castes and backgrounds can also rise,' a BJP leader claimed. In Bihar, the 'upper caste' groups have largely rallied round the BJP, while Yadavs and Muslims have mainly been the RJD's supporters. Kurmis and sections of the Most Backward Classes (MBCs) have stood by Nitish. 'Social engineering will guide our campaign in several Assembly segments. The issue of caste census will play a major role in the campaign,' said a BJP leader. The NDA is also looking to make an outreach to women who the alliance considers its major constituency. 'Money is sent to her bank account when a girl child is born in the state, a bicycle is given when she is in class 9. Money is also transferred to her account when she is in class 10, class 12 or at graduation level,' said a BJP leader. The announcement of a Makhana (fox nut) Board for Bihar in this year's Union Budget had sent out a political message ahead of the polls, given that the state is the largest producer of makhana in the country. A state BJP leader said, 'It is largely women, especially Dalit and backward class women, who work in the makhana sector in north Bihar. The thrust given to Makhana by the Narendra Modi government would boost our campaign.' The NDA camp said they were now ready to contest the polls after holding their coordination meetings for months. 'Our alliance is clear that we will contest the elections under the leadership of Nitish ji. The Bihar elections will see a united NDA pooling their resources for campaigning,' a senior NDA leader said. 'The BJP and the JD(U) have chalked out a plan for their senior leaders, including PM Modi, to lead the campaign for the Bihar polls. A shift in focus to the state is likely to start after the PM's return from his foreign visits later this week,' a BJP insider said.

Punjab police register FIR against news channels for violation of EC guidelines on opinion poll publication
Chandigarh (Punjab) [India], June 18 (ANI): Punjab Police has registered an FIR against certain news channels for allegedly violating the Election Commission of India's (ECI) guidelines by publishing an opinion poll ahead of the June 19 Assembly by-elections in Ludhiana (West). The FIR was registered following a complaint filed by the Returning Officer of the 64-Ludhiana (West) Assembly Constituency, as per the Punjab's Public Relations Department. The police stated that the publication of the opinion poll during the 48-hour 'silence period' before polling is in direct violation of Section 126 of the Representation of the People Act, 1951 and Section 223 of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS), 2023. 'The publication of the poll was carried out in violation of the guidelines issued by the Election Commission of India, which prohibits the publication or broadcasting of opinion polls in electronic media during the restricted period (48 Hours prior to the close of the Poll),' the statement mentioned. According to the police, such publications are considered attempts to influence voter perception and manipulate the electoral environment. 'The complaint was formally lodged by the Returning Officer of 64-Ludhiana (West) Assembly Constituency. The publication of such a poll is viewed as an attempt to influence voter perception and election response, thereby undermining the integrity of the electoral process,' the statement added. The police further stated that strict action would be taken, as per law, against any individual or entity found guilty of violating the Election Commission's guidelines on the publication of opinion polls during the silent period. Meanwhile, as campaigning concluded, Delhi Chief Minister Rekha Gupta visited Ludhiana to garner support for her party's candidate and urged voters to elect the leadership committed to 'service, good governance, and prosperity.' She further said that the people of Punjab were hoping for a safer and better future. 'The people of Punjab expect a safe, healthy and respectable life. They want better education, strong infrastructure, and complete freedom from the drug mafia.' (ANI) The by-elections to five assembly constituencies across the country are set to take place tomorrow. Punjab's Ludhiana (West) assembly constituency was necessitated after the death of Aam Aadmi Party MLA Gurpreet Bassi Gogi. The votes for all assembly bypolls will be counted on June 23. There are 14 candidates contesting in Ludhiana West, including Sanjeev Arora from AAP, Bharat Bhushan Ashu from Congress, Parupkar Singh Ghuman from Shiromani Akali Dal (SAD), and Jiwan Gupta from the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP). Apart from Ludhiana (West), Gujarat's Kadi (SC) and Visavadar, Kerala's Nilambur, and West Bengal's Kaliganj are also set to have bypolls. (ANI)
