Texas-based Whataburger opens first NC location in Gastonia
Big news for burger fans -- the Texas-based fast food chain Whataburger is opening Thursday in North Carolina.
Whataburger's first location in Gastonia is just off of E. Franklin Boulevard, and they told our partners at the Charlotte Observer that they're expecting a big crowd for their 9 a.m. opening.
The restaurant will be open 24 hours a day. The chain plans to open a total of 10 locations in North Carolina by the end of the year.
While it's the first Whataburger in North Carolina, it's not to be confused with What-A-Burger No. 13 -- that's a local restaurant with locations in Locust and Mount Pleasant. Whataburger is suing the local chain over alleged trademark infringement, but What-A-Burger says its name and branding are different from the national restaurant.
Whataburger first opened in 1950 in Texas and has since expanded to 16 states, including North Carolina and South Carolina.

Advertisement Hall burst onto the scene during his rookie season in New York, averaging 5.8 yards per carry in 2023 before suffering a torn ACL. Since then, he's fallen short of 1,000 yards in each of the last two seasons with the Jets. Last season, he paced the Jets with 876 rush yards and five touchdowns. Led by Mixon, six different running backs saw playing time for the Texans in 2024. Houston currently has eight running backs listed on the roster, including rookie Woody Marks, the team's fourth-round draft pick out of USC. Reportedly dealing with an ankle injury, Mixon was among a number of players on the non-participant list as the Texans began OTAs on Wednesday. With Mixon out, the thought was Pierce could get some reps in with the first team, but like Mixon, he was among the veterans not present for the voluntary workouts on Wednesday. In 2018, the Texas native was diagnosed with brain and spinal cancer, with doctors giving him five months to live, according to the United States Secret Service. Five months turned into five years. Now, after seven years and more than 13 brain surgeries, DJ is still standing. But a new diagnosis has shaken his family and supporters. When the teen — who wants to be a police officer — was sworn in as an honorary agent of the U.S. Secret Service in March, his father Theodis Daniel said DJ's family is hopeful about his future, thanks in part to a research study he is participating in. 'He's beating the odds," Theodis said at the time. But two months later, the proud parent shared that the odds have changed. During a swearing-in ceremony at Williamson County Sheriff's Office (WCSO) in Texas, Theodis told FOX 7 Austin that the teen is 'just winging it day by day' in the face of new health hardships. 'He does have three new tumors,' the father told the Texas outlet at the May 19 ceremony. 'It's rough — there isn't a class that can teach you how to deal with it. You're hearing that your child has a nasty disease.' But DJ, whose desire to become a law enforcement officer stemmed from his family's experiences during Hurricane Harvey, has already achieved his goal, according to FOX 7. He has been sworn in by more than 1,300 agencies, including multiple on May 19. And his family remains hopeful. Amid DJ's health struggles, Theodis told FOX 7, 'We're just going around showing people, 'Hey, you do care for one another. Let's give compassion and let's try to join and help each other get through things.' ' Perhaps the crowning jewel of DJ's honorary law enforcement titles is U.S. Secret Service agent. President Donald Trump bestowed him with the honor on March 4 in a joint address to Congress. 'Tonight, DJ, we're going to do you the biggest honor of them all. Severe storms to continue as calendar turns to June
Friday offered a break from thunderstorms in the Plains. The stormy corridor shifted back into the Plains on Saturday. Unfortunately for storm-weary residents, AccuWeather meteorologists say that more severe weather is on the way. Thunderstorms that are expected to form in southern Kansas and northern Oklahoma on Saturday night will dive southward into Sunday morning. This could give residents of places like Oklahoma City an early wakeup call. From there, the storms will lose some of their intensity and may largely fall apart as they head toward Dallas by mid-morning on the app? Unlock AccuWeather Alerts™ with Premium+ However, storms are likely to redevelop Sunday afternoon. While they could form as far north as Dallas, they can be a bit more numerous farther to the south. The focus will be in Texas, with cities such as Waco, Austin and Houston all in the risk zone for Sunday afternoon and evening. Hail, flooding and isolated tornadoes will all be possible. A much wider expanse of real estate will be at risk for severe weather on Monday. "A dynamic pair of storms set to march into the western United States this weekend are expected to work in tandem to prompt a risk for severe weather across the center of the nation on Monday, with hail, damaging winds and the potential for a few tornadoes being the main concerns," explained AccuWeather Meteorologist Brandon Buckingham. Other factors will come together to continue the severe weather into Tuesday and Wednesday. A fast-moving river of air in the upper atmosphere, known as the jet stream, will begin to strengthen over the Plains. In addition, warm and humid air will be flowing northward from the Gulf. A cold front moving eastward will also act as focusing mechanism for the thunderstorms. The cold front will collide with a preceding warm air mass. This difference in temperature will be another ingredient for the severe storms. The severe risk on Tuesday will extend from southwestern Wisconsin and western Illinois southwestward to northern Texas on Tuesday. This will be east of the area at risk the previous day. The front will continue eastward on Wednesday. One difference on Wednesday will be a loss of some of the energy in the atmosphere. While the initial energy weakens, a new storm will be moving into the southern Plains. "Another wave of low pressure is expected to roll out of the Rockies and into the central United States into midweek, which can keep the risk for severe weather in place across the center of the nation," said Buckingham. Even in the absence of severe weather, that new area of low pressure moving along the front will enhance rainfall. In parts of this area, the rainfall will help to alleviate a developing drought. Meanwhile, other places such as central and southern Missouri, southeastern Kansas and Oklahoma have had rainfall well above the historical average in May. For example, Springfield, Missouri, has received 7.57 inches of rain. Well over half of that came in just a three-day span. Therefore, some rivers and streams may be be elevated and any excessive rain could cause localized flooding. Showers and thunderstorms will continue to progress eastward to end the week. Meanwhile, the next cold front will be moving into the Plains by next weekend. AccuWeather meteorologists will continue to monitor any potential for severe weather with that front in the coming days.
