'That's leader behaviour': Former PM spotted taking on a surprising job

The Advertiser18 hours ago
Drivers in a busy Sydney car park were surprised to find an unusual guide for exiting traffic - former prime minister Tony Abbott.
Mr Abbott was filmed holding the boom gate of an underground car park open with one hand as he waved cars through with the other.
The Pitt Street car park was reportedly battling congestion when the former PM decided to assist.
It is unclear when the footage was filmed, but since was shared to the Instagram account Humans of Eastwood Daily, it quickly garnered thousands of likes and comments.
"From budgie smuggler to car smuggler, a man of many talents," one person replied.
Another said she was impressed, "that's leader behaviour".
"He was always a worker. Bushfire CFA volunteer, surf lifesaver, he did a lot more civil service than most pollies," said another.
Mr Abbott is well known for jumping in at times of crisis, in a personal capacity, including volunteering with the NSW Rural Fire Service. During the Black Summer bushfires he was seen working to save homes.
Despite the good deed, others could not look past the 28th prime minister's other endeavours. "Remember the time he ate an onion," one quipped.
Another said it was the "best thing Tony Abbott's done".

Rosie O'Donnell shocks with new slimmed-down figure as she champions weight loss drug Mounjaro - after fleeing Trump's US for Ireland

Rosie O'Donnell has shocked with her new slimmed-down figure - after crediting controversial weight loss drug Mounjaro for the astonishing result. The 63-year-old, who has been embroiled in a long-running public feud with US President Donald Trump, has dramatically dropped down to a size 12. O'Donnell looks unrecognisable after the dramatic shift, which resulted in a face slimming effect. In a photo posted to Instagram on Wednesday, O'Donnell showed off her transformation in a slimming figure-hugging all-black athleisure outfit. The makeup-free snap showed the barefoot talk show host in a changing room on a shopping spree for new clothes ahead of a trip to Australia. O'Donnell will make her way Down Under in the coming weeks to perform her one-woman show, Common Knowledge, at Sydney's Opera House in October, where she will reflect on her recent move from the US to Ireland. Taking to the caption of her latest post, she praised Mounjaro for its "life-saving" effect on her overall confidence and ability to help shed weight. "Ok, so went shopping to buy a comfy lounge wear outfit for my 22-hour flight to Australia," O'Donnell wrote. "I was undecided as I can't see myself in this new, smaller body. "I am shocked, I'm a 12 - Mounjaro is a lifesaver." Mounjaro is an obesity medication that was initially used for treating type 2 diabetes until it gained popularity for its weight loss effects. The drug is in demand among Hollywood's elites as an alternative to conventional weight loss methods, which may not guarantee a lower number on the scale for people suffering underlying health conditions. O'Donnell's celebrity friends flocked to the comments to praise her trimmed-down figure, with actor Brad Garrett writing, "You look great". Meanwhile, Canadian singer Jann Arden said she was "super impressed" by the media personality's efforts, adding, "You look wonderful." "Snatched for the God," chimed actor Billy Porter. Another person said they were so glad O'Donnell was feeling healthier and happier after getting the help she needed to make a change. "You look fantastic. My mouth dropped. Gorgeous, but you always were," one more person said. "I love it! Very cute and looks comfortable! Excellent choice! Have a safe flight. You look fantastic," another fan said. O'Donnell was prescribed Mounjaro in January 2023 and said she immediately shed about 4kgs before dropping from an XL to a size 12. She took to TikTok in March to boast about her "shocking" new size. "I am on Mounjaro for my diabetes, and one of the side effects is you lose weight," O'Donnell said in a video. "But (the weight loss) is also because I had a chef for over two years in Los Angeles, and I don't have a chef now. "It's me cooking for (my son) Clay and me." It comes after O'Donnell moved from the US to her father's home country of Ireland with Clay in January after Trump's presidential re-election. At the time, she said she was "heartbroken" by the state of US politics amid her long-standing feud with the 78-year-old Republican. O'Donnell and Trump's long-standing disagreement dates back to 2006 when she publicly blasted him for holding a press conference to reinstate Miss USA Tara Conner, who had violated pageant guidelines. In response, Trump called O'Donnell 'a woman out of control', and the pair have since continued to wage a war of words on X, where he has said O'Donnell was "very vicious to him" and she "deserves" his disapproval.

Former PM Tony Abbott helps direct traffic in Sydney

Former Australian prime minister Tony Abbott has been praised after he was filmed helping to direct traffic in a busy Sydney car park. In a video shared to Instagram, the former Liberal leader was seen holding up a boom gate to allow vehicles to flow through quickly. The 67-year-old former politician – dressed in business attire – waved cars through to the amusement of some drivers who noticed the high-profile Aussie. The driver behind the wheel and passengers were surprised, while witnesses reportedly said they were shocked to see how quickly Mr Abbott leapt into action. The video shared this week has been watched close to half a million times. The former PM responded to the clip jokingly, saying: 'Finally found my calling!' He later shared it to his Instagram Stories. 'Caught in the act,' the 28th leader of Australia wrote. Social media lit up in praise for Mr Abbott. 'He was always a worker. Bushfire CFA volunteer, surf lifesaver, he did a lot more civil service than most pollies,' one user commented. 'I'm impressed. That's leader behaviour,' another added. 'Doing more for the community than Albo,' a third remarked. 'I love Tony. Top bloke. Always puts other first,' a fan wrote. Mr Abbott was the prime minister between 2013 to 2015 but faced internal criticism over his 2014 budget measures, poor opinion polling which led to low approval ratings. A no-confidence motion was filed by the Liberal Party, with his then communications minister Malcolm Turnbull winning a dramatic late-night ballot 54-44. Mr Turnbull was sworn in as the fifth PM in five years, after Labor predecessors switched from Kevin Rudd to Julia Gillard and back to Mr Rudd from 2010 to 2013. Mr Abbott suffered a shock loss in the 2019 election when his seat of Warringah, in Sydney's Northern Beaches, was won by independent Zali Steggall. The electorate had been held by the Liberals since 1922. After leaving politics, he was appointed an adviser on the United Kingdom's Board of Trade by then British PM Boris Johnson to help shape post-Brexit trade policy. In 2023 he joined Global Warming Policy Foundation, a UK-based think tank, which focuses on climate and energy policy. Mr Abbott was a sceptic on global warming, previously saying in late 2023 that human-induced climate change is 'ahistorical and implausible'. More recently he was spotted on the federal election campaign trail, trying to convince voters to vote for Liberal candidate for Spence, Daniel Wild, who later lost to Labor. The former politician recently took aim at Welcome to Country ceremonies, describing the practice as 'grating' and 'virtue signalling'. 'They suggest that the country belongs more to some people than others,' he said to 2GB, following the Anzac Day controversy in Melbourne where multiple men booed during the Welcome to Country portion of a Dawn Service. 'If we start acknowledging particular groups, why do we single out Indigenous elders as opposed to early settlers, post-war migrants, our war veterans, or even teachers and nurses? Everyone is making their own contribution to Australia.'

Steve Smith hit a stunner. Then the sandpaper jokes started

One of the most spectacular shots of Steve Smith's long career has become the excuse for English cricket to make yet another sandpaper joke at his expense. Playing for Welsh Fire in the Hundred overnight, Smith carved a sublime lofted square drive from the bowling of England seamer Josh Tongue that flew flat into the stands at Sophia Gardens in Cardiff. The shot drew awed responses from a raucous crowd and broadcasters, but not so much from the Hundred's official social media accounts. On Instagram, the competition posted a picture of a damaged white Kookaburra ball with the caption 'How did Steve Smith damage this ball?' While the post allowed viewers to swipe to see Smith's shot off Tongue, the comments were inevitably spiced with replies of 'sandpaper' and 'same old Aussies, always cheating'. Since the Hundred's inception, its social media accounts have tried to earn a reputation for edginess, as has become the custom among numerous sporting competitions in Australia and around the world. But the Smith jibe is a reminder that this is the year of an Ashes bout, during which Australia's vice captain can expect more reminders of the infamous events in Cape Town back in 2018. Smith's comeback summer in England in 2019 was one of the greatest Test series performances, with 774 runs in four Tests and twin hundreds at both the Edgbaston and Old Trafford matches – he missed Headingley with concussion after being struck on the back of the head by Jofra Archer at Lord's.
