Alexa Vega is a different player for Round Lake this season. Her evolution is ‘nothing short of inspiring.'

Chicago Tribune21-04-2025

Round Lake junior midfielder Alexa Vega is in control this season.
A captain for a young team, Vega also keeps her cool during games. That wasn't always the case during her first two seasons as a varsity starter.
'Yes, I did have a temper,' she said. 'It was not good in my freshman and sophomore years. It was kind of bad. I would get yellow cards here and there. I knew I had to bring it down so I wouldn't hurt my team.'
Vega is helping her team in other ways, too, and Round Lake coach Hugo Tellez sees a correlation.
'She's a gamer and tries so hard,' Tellez said. 'She puts a lot on herself but is starting to understand the game better, and it's showing with her goals and assists.'
Indeed, Vega has 11 goals and seven assists for the Panthers (4-4-2, 1-0), who won their Northern Lake County Conference opener against Grant last week. She has shown she can be a productive leader for a group that includes two freshmen and two sophomores in the starting lineup.
'She's matured a lot from last year to this year,' Tellez said.
Vega has certainly impressed Round Lake junior defender Daisy Lopez this season.
'Her transition into upperclassman status has only amplified her impact,' Lopez said. 'Wearing the No. 10 jersey this season, she has taken on the legacy and responsibilities left by former leaders. She's not just meeting expectations, but she's surpassing them.
'Her growth on and off the field has been nothing short of inspiring. Alexa is more than just a talented athlete. She is the driving force behind our team's success. She's also a leader in every sense of the word and a player who truly defines what it means to be exceptional.'
Vega said her skills have improved too.
'I'm more technical this season,' she said. 'That's helped me a lot. I like to dribble a lot and make plays.'
Lopez said the Panthers can count on Vega to make plays all the time.
'Alexa is the complete package,' Lopez said. 'While some players can show flashes of skill, she delivers consistently.'
Vega has delivered since the season opener on March 17, when she scored three goals as Round Lake beat Larkin 8-1. That game gave her confidence.
'I was feeling good, and all my teammates were connecting the ball, and we all played well,' she said.
Vega has a lot to do with those connections, according to Lopez.
'Alexa has grown into a leader who not only sets the standard but also elevates the team,' Lopez said. 'Her presence on the team unites us, allowing us to play the kind of connected and inspired soccer that brings out the best in everyone. Alexa's influence sets her apart.'

HBCU Football Player Jackson ‘Jacks' Bailey Dies at 22

PRAIRIE VIEW, Texas – The HBCU community is mourning the loss of Prairie View A&M University football player Jackson Bailey, also known as 'Jacks', who died at the age of 22. Though he did not appear in a game for the Panthers, his presence was deeply felt within the locker room and across the campus community, according to a statement released by the university's athletic department. Bailey, a defensive lineman, joined the Prairie View A&M University football team for the 2023–24 season after transferring from Louisiana-Monroe. He began his collegiate career at Arizona, where he redshirted. Originally from DeSoto, Texas, Bailey starred at Red Oak High School and earned all-state honors in Class 5A Division I as a senior. In his standout 2020 season, he posted 64 tackles, four interceptions, two defensive touchdowns, and three fumble recoveries. Bailey chose Prairie View A&M, the only HBCU he attended, to be closer to his family. A proud member of Kappa Alpha Psi Fraternity, Inc. – Zeta Beta Chapter. Jackson Bailey was known for his brotherhood, positive energy, and deep sense of purpose. His football IQ, natural speed, and infectious personality earned him the respect of teammates and coaches alike. His favorite quote, "God got me," reflected a mindset that carried him through both life's challenges and triumphs. He dreamed of playing in the NFL or pursuing a career in physical therapy to help others heal through sports. Off the field, Bailey had a passion for cooking, music, and spending time with family, especially during the holidays. He also enjoyed playing video games and the piano, a lesser-known talent. Bailey often credited his mother, Debbie Bailey, as his greatest inspiration. He is also survived by his father, Bryon, and siblings Taylor and Kebron. "Though his time at PVAMU was brief, the impact he made will resonate for years to come," the university said. "We honor and remember Jackson 'Jacks' Bailey not only for his potential and promise but for the way he lived-with purpose, humor, humility, and heart." Saints receiver Chris Olave brushes off concussion concerns and laughs off trade talk

METAIRIE, La. (AP) — Chris Olave, the New Orleans Saints leading receiver in two of his first three seasons, wanted to make two things clear. He is not concerned about the long-term implications of repeated concussions and sees himself spending his entire career with New Orleans. Olave has been a full participant in non-contact, offseason practices and this week's mandatory minicamp, but has not played in an NFL game since last Nov. 3. That was the day he was leveled by Panthers safety Xavier Woods during a downfield route across the middle of the field. Olave remained in a prone position on the field for several minutes, after which he was taken from the stadium to a Charlotte hospital. While he was permitted to return to practice in December, he never returned to the lineup. 'It was tough, man, at first.; I ain't never really sat out that long,' Olave said after practice on Wednesday. 'That was really my first major injury. ... Just not being able to go and practice and go to meetings with my guys was the worst part, but I feel like I'm ready. I was training and lifting and everything in December. So, I feel like I'm good.' Olave has had at least four confirmed concussions in his first three seasons. The first occurred when he was a rookie in 2022 during an Oct. 9 game against Seattle. He missed just the following game and finished the season with team highs of 72 catches for 1,042 yards. During the 2023 season, he did not miss a game after a Week 12 concussion against Atlanta and finished that season with team highs of 87 catches and 1,123 yards receiving. Last season, however, he missed nine games because of two concussions. He sat out just one game after his first against Tampa Bay on Oct. 13 before the Nov. 3 one in Carolina ended his third NFL season. Olave consulted with specialists after the most recent head injury. 'They said I was OK back in December when they cleared me. It was just unlucky situations I was being put in,' Olave said. 'God's got me at the end of the day. I'm not worried about nothing. So, just got to go out there 100% and be ready.' Saints rookie coach Kellen Moore, hired in February after winning a Super Bowl with Philadelphia as the Eagles' offensive coordinator, has largely brushed aside questions about Olave's concussion history. 'I don't worry too much about that,' Moore said. 'We feel really really good about Chris. He's had an excellent offseason, an excellent career so far and (has) an excellent future. 'We feel like we've got a good one in him,' Moore added. So, apparently, do some other teams who've reportedly asked the Saints about their willingness to trade Olave as New Orleans rebuilds from a five-win 2024 season. The Saints also have lacked a proven quarterback since veteran Derek Carr's sudden retirement in May. All three of New Orleans current QBs have less than three season of experience and not a single NFL win. But Olave expressed optimism about those young QBs — rookie Tyler Shough, second-year pro Spencer Rattler and third-year pro Jake Haener. 'The young QBs are good,' Olave said. 'I don't think they're going to come in and have hiccups. I feel like they got a good head on their shoulders. They got a good IQ. They're ready to play NFL ball. So, I'm excited.' Olave also laughed off reports that he's the subject of trade offers. 'It's all rumors, man,' Olave said. 'In the offseason, everybody's trying to have something for clicks. So, I love it here. I love the front office. I love my coaches. I'm excited to be here and I want to be here forever.' ___ AP NFL:
