Fire at Córdoba's historic cathedral successfully contained
A fire broke out on Friday in the historic cathedral in the southern Spanish city of Córdoba, but the structure was later declared "safe," local authorities said.
The building, officially the Cathedral of Our Lady of the Assumption, is referred to locally as "La Mezquita," Spanish for "the mosque", as the building was once the Great Mosque of Córdoba.
Córdoba Mayor José María Bellido told local broadcaster Cadena SER late on Friday that the fire had been contained.
"The monument is safe. There are no live flames. It will not be a catastrophe," Bellido said.
The fire was extinguished at 10:30pm (2030 GMT), newspaper El Pais reported, citing police.

6.1-magnitude earthquake jolts western Turkey
No fatalities reported, rescue operations ongoing While no deaths have been reported, the quake caused the collapse of around 10 buildings in Sindirgi, the earthquake's epicentre. This included a three-storey building in the city centre, according to Sindirgi Mayor Serkan Sak, speaking on NTV. 'Six people lived in this three-storey building. Four were rescued from the rubble,' Sak said, adding that efforts to reach the remaining two individuals are ongoing. Aftershocks and structural damage AFAD reported several aftershocks ranging from 3.5 to 4.6 magnitude following the main quake, which struck at 7:53 pm local time (1653 GMT). Mayor Sak confirmed that mosques and buildings were destroyed, but reiterated that there were no casualties reported so far. Turkey's ongoing seismic vulnerability Turkey lies on several major geological fault lines and is highly prone to seismic activity. In February 2023, a massive earthquake in the country's southwest claimed over 53,000 lives and devastated the ancient city of Antakya. More recently, in early July, a 5.8-magnitude tremor in the same region resulted in one death and 69 injuries, underscoring the country's continued earthquake risk.

Five killed in China's Xinjiang after cable on suspension bridge snaps
Five people were killed after a cable on a suspension bridge snapped in northwestern China's Xinjiang region, causing them to fall off the bridge, state-run news agency Xinhua reported on Thursday. The incident, which took place at 6:18 pm (10:18 GMT) on Wednesday in a sightseeing area in the Ili Kazakh Autonomous Prefecture, injured a further 24 people, Xinhua said. The scenic area has been closed while the incident is being investigated, Xinhua said. Videos circulating on social media, verified by Reuters, show a low-hanging suspension bridge tilted to one side with handrails made from cables dangling between the walkway and the ground below. Part of the bridge hangs over a river. The videos also show at least two people lying on the ground below the bridge. In one of the videos, a casualty was put onto a wooden plank, while another video shows people carrying the makeshift stretcher away from the scene. The 65-square-kilometre area, called Xiata, boasts a natural landscape including a mountain pass, a valley, and a river as well as cultural remains such as ruins of an ancient town, public information shows. The central government has sent a task force to the site of the accident to oversee the investigation and the treatment of the injured, Xinhua said in a separate report.
