Marvel Reveals Reason for Asterisk on ‘Thunderbolts' Billboard – and It's a Major Spoiler

Yahoo05-05-2025
The big spoiler around 'Thunderbolts' is finally out of the bag. Marvel has officially revealed what that haunting asterisk means on the advertising for its latest film.
A newly revised billboard off of Sunset Plaza Drive in Los Angeles has completely removed the word 'Thunderbolts*' and replaced it with 'The New Avengers.' The new text – and apparently, new film title – appears above the photo of a cereal box featuring the seven leading ensemble characters.
Marvel's marketing campaign around 'Thunderbolts' has been one of the most experimental ones the studio has tried in years. In addition to the asterisk, which prompted months of speculation after it first appeared in March of 2024, the movie also released an A24-style trailer as well as a limited edition collaboration with Wheaties. Star David Harbour even dressed as his character Red Guardian during a panel for the movie that took place at San Diego Comic-Con.

Now that the film's been out past its no-spoilers date, the studio revealed a new title for the film, a nod to its big reveal: These are now the New Avengers.

The 36th film in the Marvel Cinematic Universe, 'Thunderbolts' is directed by Jake Schreier with a screenplay by Eric Pearson and Joanna Calo. 'Thunderbolts' is more like 'The Suicide Squad' than 'The Avengers' as the movie follows a group of unconventional antiheroes who are forced to team up to take down a dangerous threat.
The movie stars Florence Pugh ('Midsommar,' 'Little Women') as Yelena Belova, Sebastian Stan ('Pam & Tommy,' 'A Different Man') as Bucky Barnes, David Harbour ('Stranger Things') as Red Guardian, Hannah John-Kamen ('Black Mirror,' 'The Stranger') as Ghost, Olga Kurylenko ('Quantum of Solace,' 'Treason') as Taskmaster and Wyatt Russell ('Black Mirror,' 'Lodge 49') as John Walker.
The movie saw $76 million over its opening weekend, which is in line with pre-release projections for the movie but is less than the $89 million 'Captain America: Brave New World' made during its three-day opening.

‘Severance' Standout Tramell Tillman Joins ‘Spider-Man: Brand New Day'

The manager of the severed floor has a new gig: tangling with Spider-Man. Though we (of course) have absolutely no idea which character he'll be playing, Severance standout Tramell Tillman will be swinging into a role in Spider-Man: Brand New Day. This update on the much-anticipated fourth Spider-Man MCU movie starring the returning Tom Holland, Zendaya, and Jacob Batalon—plus Jon Bernthal's Punisher and Mark Ruffalo's Hulk—comes from Variety. Tillman joins Sadie Sink (Stranger Things) and Liza Colón-Zayas (The Bear) on the film's list of 'new cast members from other things we like, though we have no clue who they'll be playing here.' As Severance's Mr. Milchick—or 'Seth,' depending on how far up the Lumon ladder you happen to be—Tillman really broke out in this year's second season, earning an Emmy nomination for his portrayal of a corporate zealot who's starting to show cracks in his conviction. He's not one of the show's severed characters, but viewers nonetheless got a good glimpse of the almost double life he's leading, following the rule of law at work while also cringing at some of the decisions made above his head. And, it goes without saying, if Brand New Day has any dance numbers, Holland absolutely has a kick-ass partner ready to share the floor. Spider-Man: Brand New Day hits theaters July 31, 2026, with Marvel veteran Destin Daniel Cretton (Shang-Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings) directing. Want more io9 news? Tillman's role has not been revealed, and he joins Sink and Colón-Zayas as the mysterious actors so far. There are a lot of rumors regarding the new film, including the theory that Miles Morales might finally be making his MCU debut. Reports indicated that Kevin Feige stated the Morales character should not emerge in the MCU into the "Spider-Verse" films are finished, but that could be a smokescreen. It could be that the addition of Colón-Zayas and Tillman could play the part of Morales' parents. The character's parents in the comics and "Spider-Verse" films are of African American and Puerto Rican descent, respectively. Marvel is generally great at hiding things, so the studio could be throwing out nuggets of information to throw fans off theories that may or may not be true. The Identy of Another MCU Hero Reportedly Set To Appear in SPIDER-MAN: BRAND NEW DAY Revealed — GeekTyrant

The Marvel rumor mill just dropped another big one. A recent scoop suggests that Spider-Man: Brand New Day will feature yet another major MCU hero alongside Tom Holland's Peter Parker, Jon Bernthal's Frank Castle, and Mark Ruffalo's Bruce Banner. Ever since Sony and Marvel announced the fourth solo Spidey film, fans have been speculating about which heroes and villains could show up. The confirmations of Bernthal's return as The Punisher and Ruffalo as Bruce Banner already made this movie sound stacked, but it looks like the roster isn't done growing. A recent report claimed that "at least one more hero" would appear in the movie, and now we know who that might be, and I wasn't expecting it. Possible SPOILERS ahead: According to industry insider Daniel Richtman, Florence Pugh has joined the cast, reprising her role as Yelena Belova. Richtman claims Pugh will shoot her scenes back-to-back with Zendaya's while filming Dune: Part III , which may mean their screen time in Brand New Day will be about the same. If true, this is a very surprising addition since Yelena has had no direct ties to Spider-Man in the MCU so far. Richtman tends to be reliable with these early casting reports, and with Yelena expected to play a huge part in Avengers: Doomsday , her appearance here could serve as setup for what's to come. While some pieces of the puzzle are coming together, plenty of mysteries remain. Sadie Sink's role hasn't been revealed, the film's main villain is still under wraps, and there are rumblings of multiple antagonists. Liza Colón-Zayas is also on board in an undisclosed role, while Zendaya and Jacob Batalon will return as MJ and Ned, though they're not expected to play major parts this time. Director Destin Daniel Cretton teased what fans can expect during CinemaCon: 'I'm spending my time exploring the next stage of this amazing character with a team of the most incredible artists in the world. We're all, just daily, nerding out over the suit, how to swing, how to create an event, an emotional story, and a ride that we haven't really seen before.' Spider-Man: Brand New Day will hit theaters on July 31, 2026. If this Yelena Belova rumor proves true, the movie's lineup just got a lot more interesting. What do you think about Black Widow crossing paths with Spider-Man for the first time?
