Marvel Reveals Reason for Asterisk on ‘Thunderbolts' Billboard – and It's a Major Spoiler
The big spoiler around 'Thunderbolts' is finally out of the bag. Marvel has officially revealed what that haunting asterisk means on the advertising for its latest film.
A newly revised billboard off of Sunset Plaza Drive in Los Angeles has completely removed the word 'Thunderbolts*' and replaced it with 'The New Avengers.' The new text – and apparently, new film title – appears above the photo of a cereal box featuring the seven leading ensemble characters.
Marvel's marketing campaign around 'Thunderbolts' has been one of the most experimental ones the studio has tried in years. In addition to the asterisk, which prompted months of speculation after it first appeared in March of 2024, the movie also released an A24-style trailer as well as a limited edition collaboration with Wheaties. Star David Harbour even dressed as his character Red Guardian during a panel for the movie that took place at San Diego Comic-Con.

Now that the film's been out past its no-spoilers date, the studio revealed a new title for the film, a nod to its big reveal: These are now the New Avengers.

The 36th film in the Marvel Cinematic Universe, 'Thunderbolts' is directed by Jake Schreier with a screenplay by Eric Pearson and Joanna Calo. 'Thunderbolts' is more like 'The Suicide Squad' than 'The Avengers' as the movie follows a group of unconventional antiheroes who are forced to team up to take down a dangerous threat.
The movie stars Florence Pugh ('Midsommar,' 'Little Women') as Yelena Belova, Sebastian Stan ('Pam & Tommy,' 'A Different Man') as Bucky Barnes, David Harbour ('Stranger Things') as Red Guardian, Hannah John-Kamen ('Black Mirror,' 'The Stranger') as Ghost, Olga Kurylenko ('Quantum of Solace,' 'Treason') as Taskmaster and Wyatt Russell ('Black Mirror,' 'Lodge 49') as John Walker.
The movie saw $76 million over its opening weekend, which is in line with pre-release projections for the movie but is less than the $89 million 'Captain America: Brave New World' made during its three-day opening.

"Avengers assemble" isn't just a call to action for superheroes; it's also the basis for a new tag fighting game. The reveal of Marvel Tōkon: Fighting Souls closed out PlayStation's State of Play presentation ahead of Summer Games Fest 2025. PlayStation Studios and Marvel Games are teaming up with Arc System Works, the studio behind the Guilty Gear fighting game series, for this project. The game is scheduled to launch some time in 2026 on PlayStation 5 and on PC through the Steam and Epic stores. The trailer shows several members of the Marvel roster — Captain America, Iron Man, Spider-Man, Doctor Doom, Storm, Ms. Marvel, Star-Lord and Ghost Rider — cycling on screen and showing off their abilities. Team-based fighting games have a long lineage, but those are commonly trios of characters controlled by a single competitor. Marvel Tōkon ups the ante with a 4v4 team system. The additional team member creates even more potential for flashy combination attacks. "One of the appeals of Marvel comics is seeing the vast cast of characters coming together to create all kinds of unique team-ups," Game Director and Lead Battle Designer Kazuto Sekine said of the design choice. "With these two ideas in mind, we concluded that creating a 4v4 team VS system would be the best way to not only create those over-the-top moments, but to further evolve the tag fighting genre." Marvel is having a bit of a moment in gaming, with the team shooter Marvel Rivals becoming a surprise sensation in recent months despite heavy competition from established titles. (Unfortunately, that success didn't save several members of the North American dev team from being laid off in February.) It should be fascinating to compare how the two genres interpret the iconic characters and their powers.

Emily Hampshire Confirmed To Join Marvel's VISION as E.D.I.T.H., Tony Stark's Former AI — GeekTyrant
Schitt's Creek breakout Emily Hampshire has officially joined the cast of Marvel's upcoming Vision series for Disney+. It was rumored last week and now Deadline confirms Hampshire will be playing E.D.I.T.H. the sleek, intimidating AI system originally created by Tony Stark. That's right. E.D.I.T.H., which is short for Even Dead, I'm The Hero, is back. First introduced in Spider-Man: Far From Home as Stark's posthumous gift to Peter Parker, the advanced AI system offers control over a global satellite defense network and a fleet of weaponized drones. Now, it seems E.D.I.T.H. will have a more prominent role and a new personality behind the voice. Hampshire joins Paul Bettany, who returns as the titular synthezoid Vision in this WandaVision spinoff. She'll appear alongside a cast that already includes James Spader reprising his iconic role as Ultron, T'Nia Miller as Jocasta (another familiar AI name from Marvel lore), as well as Todd Stashwick, Ruaridh Mollica, and Faran Tahir, who returns as Raza, a character we last saw in Iron Man. With all of these characters in the series, Vision is shaping up to be a deep dive into the evolving world of artificial intelligence in the MCU, and the moral minefields that come with it. Hampshire is best known for her deadpan brilliance as Stevie Budd on Schitt's Creek , a role that earned her and the cast a Screen Actors Guild Award. She's also fresh off starring in the Prime Video thriller The Rig and will next appear opposite Vince Vaughn in the 20th Century Studios comedy Mike & Nick & Nick & Alice . The Vision series marks Marvel's second spinoff from WandaVision , following the upcoming Agatha All Along , and is one of several shows currently in active development, including Daredevil: Born Again .

Frank Grillo Talks About Why His DC Character Has Been So Much More Fulfilling Than His Marvel Role Ever Was — GeekTyrant
Frank Grillo is one of the few in the club of those who have played characters in both the DC and Marvel Universes. He played Brock Rumlow, a.k.a. Crossbones, in the Marvel movies Captain America: The Winter Soldier (2014) and Captain America: Civil War (2016). He returned to voice the character in the series What If…? , and appeared in Avengers: Endgame . Though his appearance was brief, he's kept himself busy in other franchises, namely DC, and he's a lot happier with this arc over there than he ever was at Marvel. During a recent appearance on the Tulsa King panel at Fan Expo Dallas, moderated and hosted by ScreenRant, Grillo looked back on his time with the MCU, while sharing why he is having a better time being part of the DCU franchise. After discussing the MCU's Crossbones, Grillo explained what the upside is to playing a character like Flag Sr. in the DCU while working together with James Gunn: 'Rick Flag Sr... It was unfortunate because Crossbones isn't onscreen that much, and this is years ago. People love that character, and Marvel seems to have reused every other character except Crossbones. 'Now he's popping up in Spider-Man comics and Daredevil comics because he's a great villain, so I was expecting to have a lot of fun with it. But unfortunately, he perished kind of quickly. But I love working with James Gunn. ''I did the voice for Creature Commandos, and then I'm in Peacemaker, which is coming up in August. And before that, it's Superman with Rick Flag. So, it's different; it's more of an adventure than the Marvel stuff was.' Grillo's Flag Sr. makes his live-action debut with Superman in July, before returning in Peacemaker season 2.
