I quit Monster Hunter World after a few hours — but Monster Hunter Wilds just became my early GOTY pick

Monster Hunter World was one of those games where everybody around me seemed to love it, and I just couldn't find the hook. I did try. I played for around half a dozen hours at launch before my patience ran thin, and I was forced to conclude it just wasn't for me. I uninstalled it and haven't touched it since.
So, heading into 2025, it's fair to say that Monster Hunter Wilds was not especially high on my gaming wishlist. But, just like with Worlds, seeing all the hype and anticipation surrounding the next mainline installment in the uber-popular franchise had me itching to give Monster Hunter another try.
I was fortunate enough to get early access to the game, and have spent the last couple of weeks totally falling in love with Monster Hunter Wilds. It's gone from a title I was curious (but pretty reserved) about, to easily my early pick for my personal Game of the Year for 2025. It even ranks ahead of Kingdom Come: Deliverance 2, which is some feat as I have a lot of love for the medieval RPG.
It's perhaps a little surprising, as Wilds doesn't really do anything radically different compared to Worlds, but it's proved to be the right game, at the right time. Here's why I've become obsessed with Monster Hunter Wilds completely against my own expectations.

Curiously, I don't actually think the biggest reason why I'm enjoying Wilds in a way that I never did with Worlds comes down to any radical differences between the two games. Wilds is very much an iterative sequel, taking the foundation from Worlds and making small (but still pretty meaningful) adjustments and improvements. What's changed this time is me.
A person can change a lot over seven years, and with Monster Hunter Wilds, I'm taking a very different approach. When I played Worlds, I sped between objectives, and rarely spent time at base camp. I felt as if I wasn't hunting monsters every moment I was playing, then I was doing something wrong.
That approach led to me being woefully unprepared and under-leveled for even some early-game encounters and resulted in plenty of frustration. In Wilds, I've found the joys in fully gearing up ahead of fights, making sure I've crafted the best items I can, cooking up meals that give me additional buffs, and restocking my consumable pouches to make sure I have what I need.
Just taking a moment to slow down, and engage with the game's intricate series of upgrade, item and equipment menus has greatly aided my overall enjoyment. It's also made the actual fights with monsters feel even more exciting as they come after a careful period of proper preparation.
One new addition in Wilds compared to World is the inclusion of Support Hunters. These are NPC characters that you can assist you out in the field.
This might seem a small addition on paper (and I believe the feature originated in Monster Hunter Rise), but it's made a huge difference. Playing Monster Hunter solo is sort of dull — it's just you whaling on an oversized beast for minutes on end — but when experienced with other players, there's a real sense of camaraderie, and also potential for synergizing your load-outs.
Of course, playing with other humans online is preferable, but when those aren't available (or when the servers were sparsely populated during the review period), I've found the NPC hunters to be more than adequate.
Plus, as it's always the same NPCs, I've started to build an attachment to them. Rosso has become my trusted sharpshooter, and Olivia once came in clutch to distract a towering monster when it was about to take a lethal swing at me.
Another aspect of Monster Hunter Wilds that has fueled my current obsession is that after every single mission, I always feel like I'm suitably rewarded for the effort.
I can definitely recall heading back to base in Worlds and not having enough materials to craft anything substantial. But in Wilds, even as I approach the end of the story, I haven't encountered the same friction.
Whenever I return victorious from a hunt, there's always been some way for me to approve my character, upgrade my gear, or just craft a new weapon.
The loop of crafting cool gear to hunt monsters to craft even cooler gear has always been Monster Hunter's bread and butter, but it's been polished to a fine sheen in this latest entry.
All these elements add up to create an experience that I simply don't want to put down. At the start of the year, I would have thought it unlikely to see Monster Hunter Wilds among my GOTY picks, but now, I'd be shocked if it doesn't rank near the very top.

Jean-Michel Jarre to release ‘audio visual record' of his Bratislava mega-gig, which featured Brian May

Jean-Michel Jarre has announced he's releasing Live In Bratislava, what he's calling 'the definitive audio-visual record' of his gig last year in the Slovakian capital. As usual with the 76-year-old producer, it was no-expense-spared all-bells-and-whistles son et lumiere spectaculaire. More than 100,000 people gathered across Bratislava in May 2024 along the banks of the River Danube to feast their eyes on the show, which included a 400-drone 'ballet', fireworks-a-plenty and laser displays. Lots of lasers. Jean-Michel Jarre loves his lasers. Also involved was Queen's Brian May who accompanied him on a new arrangement of Dvorák's New World Symphony, as well as newly adapted works Bratislava Time and Rendez-vous Bratislava. There were further contributions from the Slovak Philharmonic Orchestra and a 19-piece chorus from the Slovak Philharmonic Choir. So yes, it was big alright. Putting it all on involved some 170 tonnes of equipment, 21 LED screens, 150 projectors, hundreds of kilometres of cabling and the largest stage ever built in Slovakia. As befitting an event of that scale, the release isn't just a bog standard CD. Oh no. There's a double CD digipack, plus a Blu-ray which features the 'Unseen Director's Cut in 4K' which has PCM 2.0, DTS HD 5.1 and Dolby True HD 5.1 audio. The limited edition 'Ultimate Collector's Box', meanwhile, features both the CDs and Blu-ray as well as a deluxe coffee table photo book and an 'exclusive' 10-inch blue vinyl of the producer's new track, Bridge To The Future. You pays your money, you takes your choice. In a statement, Jean-Michel Jarre said of the release: 'Since that very special night in Bratislava, we've worked with a brilliant creative team to bring together the most complete, cinematic version of the concert possible. The sound on this release comes from the live TV broadcast of the concert, capturing the raw, in-the-moment energy of the performance. I'm proud to finally share this with everyone. Not only those who joined us in Slovakia or watched online, but all who want to relive the experience." James Gunn Debunks Superman Rumor About The Runtime While Offering Thrilling Update About The DC Flick

If there's one movie I'm looking forward to on the 2025 movie schedule more than any other, it has to be James Gunn's upcoming Superman. To be sure, I'm far from certain the movie is going to be great, but there's a lot of reason to believe it will be, and the potential for something really special is quite high. This makes it very exciting to learn that the movie, set for release in a little over a month, is very nearly done. In a post on Threads, James Gunn did what he does best: debunking the latest rumor regarding one of his films. In this case, it came from a fan asking about an official runtime for Superman, listed as two hours and two minutes. Gunn said the official runtime for the film hasn't been set yet, for the simple reason that the movie isn't actually finished. However, that day is very close as there are apparently only a couple of VFX shots remaining to finish. Gunn said… That is not correct. It's almost totally locked - meaning we're just finishing a couple VFX shots over the weekend - but that's not the running time. The runtime itself isn't particularly important. The movie will be as long as it needs to be. Given that we've seen more and more blockbusters with runtimes significantly higher than two hours, it's unlikely the movie will be edited down more than James Gunn wants. While there was a time when we might have seen a movie with broad appeal edited down for no reason beyond a desire to hit a certain runtime, that's less likely today. What's important is that Superman is literally days away from being completed. It doesn't change how many days I need to wait to see it, of course, but the fact that it's nearly done makes it feel like Superman is just a little bit closer. Max: Save Up To $41 On Annual PlansThe first part of James Gunn's new DCU, Creature Commandoes, is already available on Max, and there you can also watch every previous Superman movie to get ready for the new one. It's probably worth signing up for a year just to be able to watch all the DC content. Alternatively, its cheapest plan starts from $9.99 a month. I'd always recommend getting Max as a part of the bundle with Disney Plus and Hulu, though, starting from $16.99 a Deal Superman will make the big screen debut of the new DCU under James Gunn, and with numerous DC Comics characters other than the Man of Steel set to appear, the movie will certainly open up many different directions for a cinematic universe to go. When Iron Man first arrived, we didn't know what Marvel was planning, but with DC's new universe, we know what's happening, which makes Superman's arrival all the more exciting and important. Superman is going to be a big movie when it hits theaters in July. Whether it's a great film or a major box office hit remains to be seen, but success or failure, Superman is going to make a considerable impact. I can't wait to see which it is. How long I'm sitting in the theater is the least of my concerns.

Clifton has been giving the performance of a lifetime as he portrays Liam's slow decline as the result of a brain tumor and during the May 26 episode he implored Finn (Tanner Novlan) to help take care of his girls when the time comes. Liam is also hoping that Carter will be there to help, too. Little does Liam know, while he's giving a heartfelt soliloquy to Finn, Carter is on one knee, asking Hope to marry him. She didn't have an answer for him, so it's anyone's guess how this is going to turn out. Here's the first look-ahead preview of what's coming up this week: And here's even more of a look-ahead: The first look-ahead is the one that came at the end of the May 26 episode. In it, Liam hugs Beth and tells Finn that he doesn't know how he's going to say goodbye. Next we see Steffy (Jacqueline MacInnes Wood) telling Hope and Ridge (Thorsten Kaye) that "she" is a monster and she needs to be kept away from her family. The "she" in question, of course, is Luna (Lisa Yamada), who, in the following scene, can be seen telling Sheila (Kimberlin Brown) that Steffy will never accept her, so "why not just eliminate that threat?" To her credit, Sheila shuts that down quickly, but it doesn't look like Luna is convinced. In the YouTube clip, Steffy and Finn share a moment together while Ridge tells the couple that Luna is one the hunt for Steffy. Finn looks upset. Next we see a different moment in the conversation between Luna and Sheila. Sheila tells Luna that Finn and Steffy have made a decision and she has to accept it, and Luna needs to "go." The clip ends as Luna is seen buying a gun and aiming it at a picture of Steffy. Interestingly, this is the first time we've seen Luna in her murderous element. We saw her before in flashbacks, but this time we're seeing the moment when she hatches a plan to kill someone who's standing in the way of getting what she wants. We have a feeling that things are about to take a very dark turn in the next week. The Bold and the Beautiful airs weekdays on CBS and the following day on Paramount Plus.
